To think having XL bullies around children is child neglect?

To think that parents who have XL Bullies in the house with children should be investigated for child neglect. Its the same as leaving a child with a loaded gun to play with. What the hell is wrong with people that are willing to take this chance with their children’s lives?

The dogs are essentially large pitbulls. It is reckless endangerment. Bull breeds were never nanny dogs. They were bred to fight.

pickledandpuzzled · 22/09/2023 18:22

I don't see what you see Blurrededges. There's lots to dislike about that video and the breed, absolutely.

What's your experience of/with dogs?

StripeyMow · 22/09/2023 18:33

YANBU - But I don’t think you can tar all owners with the same brush or make the assumption they are all yobs. I dare say some of these people genuinely believe their dog won’t hurt anyone, or a child. Or did before the unimaginable (to them) happened.
And yes, all dogs are unpredictable. Other dogs have killed infants. The difference here is these dogs are bred for size and strength, they have hospitalised and killed adults. They are huge. If one attacks you have little chance of fighting back. So a child doesn’t stand a chance. Yes you can keep a dog separate in the house, but would you take the risk with one built to kill. They should be banned, neutered and taken out of homes where children are present.

And how did they know that the dog was barking because it could magically sense the child not breathing upstairs through a closed door?

My friend has an assistance dog that lets her know she is about to have an eplieptic fit. Its made a huge difference to her life. I dont know whether it can tell her through doors and upstairs though.

It doesnt monitor her breathing. They trainers arent sure if its smell or subtle behaviour changes.

I would think in this case the dog could hear unusual sounds from a seizure.

I bet it's not an XL Bully.

No its not. Im just so amazed by it i keep telling everyone about it.

Maireas · 22/09/2023 18:50

No doubt, @Spendonsend - you get service dogs who are incredible and make a difference to so many people. However, this isn't about well trained, socialised service dogs. This is about dogs who are bred to attack and kill. Huge, muscular animals who can - and do - kill.

HerMammy · 22/09/2023 18:54

Bear in mind JRTs, huskies etc have killed small children, where do we stop?
If you look at every attack, there is human error/fault, the dogs have not been trained/socialised, contained etc
If you can look beyond the hysterical posts/articles, there are many very responsible large breed owners.
I myself had a cane corso boy (sadly now passed away) I adopted him after he'd been mistreated and in the 7 years we had him he was a wonderful dog, great with everyone he met, small/large dogs, because I put the time into training him.
Any dog has the potential to be a great dog.

Meeting · 22/09/2023 18:55

I agree, people are stupid. I wouldn't leave my baby with any dog.

I keep seeing videos online of tiny babies sleeping next to great big Alsatian dogs with hundreds of gushing comments about how 'cute' it is.

Maireas · 22/09/2023 18:57

"The human error is that the dogs haven't been trained or socialised" that really doesn't help if you've been attacked. Some dogs aren't trained well, but still don't attack.

Devilsmommy · 22/09/2023 12:44

This is what I've been thinking/saying especially since seeing an XL bully kill someone in real life. No child should be put at that kind of risk, ever

How are you Devilsmommy? I hope the initial shock is easing and you're able to sleep a bit better. I can't imagine the absolute horror of what you witnessed last week, and I hope that you've got some support.

These hideous dogs should never have been engineered and the sooner they're history, the better I'll feel.

HauntingSecrets · 22/09/2023 19:27

I have small dogs that are taught bite inhibition, they are taught to bite safely.

I read a story of therapy dog who’s handler accident shut its tail in the car door, the calm well trained dog snapped at the handler and caused a serious bite as it had never been taught bite inhibition. It’s a step often missed out when training calmer breeds but it’s essential for every dog.

When my toddler accidentally fell on my sleeping dog, my dog snapped at her, she made contact but didn’t even leave a bruise. This is why I won’t leave my children unattended around any dog, no matter how safe the owner tells me it is unless they have expressly taught bite inhibition.

Maireas · 22/09/2023 19:30

That's interesting, @HauntingSecrets . You're obviously a caring and responsible owner.

Devilsmommy · 22/09/2023 19:39

@SidekickSylvia thanks for thinking of me. Yes am sleeping slightly better but any time I hear a dog bark or growl I tense up and get horrible gnawing in my stomach. Sick of seeing pics of these dogs with children, makes me feel sick. Don't know if I'll ever look at dogs the same way. Can't unsee that horror

Maireas · 22/09/2023 19:41

How awful, @Devilsmommy to witness something so shocking and brutal. I hope you're doing ok 💐

pawsandponies · 22/09/2023 19:42

Well I have Rottweilers and two kids and many other animals but I suppose it's impossible that I am both a responsible pet owner and parent.

Maireas · 22/09/2023 19:47

Why impossible, @pawsandponies ? @HauntingSecrets obviously is!

Devilsmommy · 22/09/2023 19:48

@pawsandponies did you get the dog first and then have children or the other way around?

My god this is absolutely awful, I’m so sorry.

was it Ian price? It makes me feel absolutely sick, I can’t imagine seeing something like that in real lif

Devilsmommy · 22/09/2023 19:57

@Anothernamechangeee yes it was, my living room window looks down onto his mom's garden where he was attacked. I had an unencumbered view of the whole thing and honestly I've got no sympathy for all the people moaning about their little softie pets who've got the capability of killing a human being. I will never be able to not picture what I saw, a video doesn't give justice to the absolute terror those dogs caused

I’m so so sorry. How absolutely horrific for anyone to witness that. Are you having professional help?

how come the police didn’t turn up sooner?

pawsandponies · 22/09/2023 20:01

@Devilsmommy one before one after why my I ask?

Devilsmommy · 22/09/2023 20:08

@pawsandponies wondering what the thinking is when you've got a baby, why choose a dog that could be a real problem if it snapped because of its size and breed. And don't say it's trained, Even trained dogs can flip

I'm not sure why the police didn't come sooner. It did seem like the attack just went on and on and on before they showed. We're semi rural so maybe nobody closer? I'd like to know that myself

ACertainKindOfLight · 22/09/2023 20:12

I am a dog lover but these types of dogs are too high risk and the consequences can be deadly. They should ban the lot. They are too unpredictable.
I also agree that a child and a dog of any breed should never be left alone.
It turns my stomach to see these big muscular dogs around young babies and children, totally irresponsible and stupid.
If people are found to be breeding, buying and selling these types of dogs they need to be sent to court and heavily fined as well as having dogs euthanized. If they are then found to have another similar type of dog, sent straight to prison. We need to have absolute zero tolerance now, enough is enough.
