"Cheeky" swimsuits. Just why?

disappearingfish · 21/09/2023 17:22

I get it for posing on the beach, but why do swimwear makers cut the bums off suits otherwise aimed at the "proper swimming" market. I do not want to see bare arses at 0630 under the bad lighting of my local council swimming.

This, for example. Who buys this? www.arenasport.com/en_uk/006660-women-s-swimsuit-arena-mesh-panels-power-back.html

The male gaze is the common denominator though, isn’t it. Whether that’s women having to wear burqas as it’s “necessary to protect women from unwanted attention” or western clothing designed to attract that attention and girls being told they should look sexy and attractive. When you think about it both issues come down to men and their ‘gaze’.

But in the west, women have a CHOICE of what to wear. If every single women’s swimming costume was a tiny thong bikini you’d have a point. But it isn’t.

Women who wear a thong bikini are choosing to flaunt their body. Nobody has a gun to their head forcing them to do it. And there are plenty of conservative options for swimwear readily available.

Water polo swimsuits tend to be worn in the wedgie sizes to minimise grabbing surface. That's the only excuse I could think of for Arena to sell this. But there's far too many straps for this to be a wise choice for water polo!

It's weird as it's a sports brand...

Lizardonachair · 21/09/2023 20:03

Looks like a recipe for thrush 😂

emilybr · 21/09/2023 20:07

Imagine if men started to show more of their ass cheeks to where it's normal to wear a thonged bikini to a council gym.

Imagine if men took looks of pictures of their ass in sports wear, doing squats, sticking out their bums, showing their cleavage, making this cleavage horrendously larger, had Instagram and OFs etc.

This is why some women are against this movement of showing as much of your body to the general public - because it really doesn't make women equal.

disappearingfish · 21/09/2023 20:08

Yes of course women have a choice but it's naive to think that choice isn't influenced by the bombardment of marketing and messaging we get about ideal female beauty from the day we are born. Look at small children's clothing and how even aged 3 girls' shorts are cut higher on the thigh than boys' shorts. Why does a clothing manufacturer think three year old girls need to show some thigh?

You wouldn't show your bare arse in work, so it's obviously not just another body part, for all those women shrugging their shoulders here.

I see your point and I wish it were 100% true that women (especially young girls) really have a choice, I think what some posters are trying to question is that “choice” exactly- is it truly ours , have we always dreamt of wedgie swimsuits or have we been conditioned to think we want to wear some of this idiotic clothing due to years and years of aggressive marketing, media, fashion and beauty industries largely driven by men’s needs and wants and influenced by their power.
I used to think like you that’s why I don’t think you’re necessarily incorrect - now I just wear what some would call frumpy or boring and I’d call comfortable - in my case my views changed with age but I used to be heavily influenced by media and “high standards” when I was younger.

EBearhug · 21/09/2023 20:09

Don't think I've seen these at my pool, but haven't really been looking. I'm not sure i care if someone does, though i don't yhink i would. I did notice a woman yesterday whose bikini was clearly lower cut than the cossie she was wearing at that time, as she had a strip of pale skin on both upper thighs.

The current fashion with men at our pool seems to be close-fitting trunks like cycle shorts. They leave little to the imagination. In one case, I had some objectified thoughts in an approving way; the other had a bit of builder's crack showing and was not so fit.

We have under 50s doing aquafit. I'm only just over 50, but I've been doing it at various pools for the best part of 3 decades.

smooththecat · 21/09/2023 20:09

It’s fashion innit. The full coverage bum thing looks very middle aged now unfortunately.

Usernamen · 21/09/2023 20:11

How did feminism go from ‘free the nipple’ to ‘let’s cover up’ in a matter of a few years?

MaryJanesonabreak · 21/09/2023 20:11

Wishthiswasntmypost · 21/09/2023 17:33

I am constantly infuriated at clothes manufacturers making women look like idiots. The vast majority of bums you see in these are not stunning. They just look frankly like they've got a wedgie. People stare with wry smiles. You never see men wearing ridiculous items of clothing. It really makes us (women)look easily led, and is usually laughable

This; you never see men or boys walking around with their arses hanging out. Yet women and girls(early training here) are brainwashed into thinking it’s normal to just have a bit of arse, or all of it, on show. Talk about the male gaze!

TheLightProgramme · 21/09/2023 20:12

These sorts of swimsuits are mainly designed by men at a guess.

Notice there's no one selling equivalents for men? Because you know it would be demeaning men to swim with their arse out, but women exist to titillate so there its ok.

Fink · 21/09/2023 20:12

What winds me up my more is teen dd's school uniform swimming costume, which is a proper sports-style costume but with a really high cut leg and at least half the arse showing, as well as the standard huge cut out of the back. All the girls hate it. And they have to do swimming as a mixed lesson (which is a whole other argument I'm having with SLT). Predictably, the boys have a choice of two styles of shorts (looser or tighter fit), both of which cover everything from waist to mid-thigh. Both sexes can wear a t-shirt over the cossie if they want, because we all know that covering up with a wet t-shirt is going to magically solve all your teenager's body conciousness issues.

TheLightProgramme · 21/09/2023 20:14

Well women's sport got serious, and free nipples lack the support of a good sports bra or a proper swimsuit.

Its not just about coverage, its about practical, comfortable clothing that enables women to perform at their sport.

I think "free the nipple" was a patriarchy bait and switch. If nudity really was empowering, Sunak, Johnson, Biden, Trump, Zelensky, Obama etc. would never have a stitch on.

If someone had the confidence and enjoys that cut of swimsuit, shorts, whatever the item of clothing is, why not? We spend so much of our time comparing ourselves to others, if something makes us feel good, roll with it.
How is it different to when people show a ton of cleavage?
It's also a lush swimsuit and I've bookmarked it lol

I don’t understand people saying this sort of thing is comfortable. How is a permanent wedgie comfortable?

And no, I don’t want to see bum cheeks everywhere I go. Male or female.

I don’t get it either (same goes for scrunch bum leggings).

Can you explain this aspect to me at least?

My instagram was full of topless feminists a few years ago.

Now showing some arse cheek is problematic?

LaffTaff · 21/09/2023 20:18

I think it looks massively uncomfortable - you're not meant to have anything wedged inside your arse cheeks.
And I'm with the OP, I don't want to see anyone's bare arse.

FlySwimmer · 21/09/2023 20:18

I’m not convinced that is a swimsuit for truly ‘serious’ swimming - while the description says it can be worn for beach or pool, it can also ‘double as a bodysuit paired with jeans’!!

The high cut/wedgie look is really common among very high-level swimmers (think Olympians), many of whom wear several sizes too small. Maybe something to do with hydrodynamics?

Having said all that, Arena have form for bonkers swimsuits. Who would wear this?!

Indeed. I'm not sure even how to begin explaining what's wrong with that comment.

foolsgolddigger · 21/09/2023 20:19

I think this is a fairly weird "length" tbh. It either has to be showing much more, or much less. Even a 15% body fat powerlifter's bum would look unappealing in this.

Usernamen · 21/09/2023 20:22

I think it’s reasonable to ask why the same feminists who were posing topless all over Instagram a few years ago now appear to have a problem with other women posing in a thong bikini.

Why is one type of nudity more acceptable than another?

I think it's quite the opposite

Yes. You often see half naked women on the red carpet. But ever men with their abs and pecs on display.
