"Cheeky" swimsuits. Just why?

I get it for posing on the beach, but why do swimwear makers cut the bums off suits otherwise aimed at the "proper swimming" market. I do not want to see bare arses at 0630 under the bad lighting of my local council swimming.

This, for example. Who buys this? www.arenasport.com/en_uk/006660-women-s-swimsuit-arena-mesh-panels-power-back.html

I don’t frequent anywhere people are swimming so can’t comment on its popularity of the cut, but it does seem to be a cut popular in female wrestler’s pants. I think of it as the pre-wedgie cut!
I don’t have the arse for it though!

I am constantly infuriated at clothes manufacturers making women look like idiots. The vast majority of bums you see in these are not stunning. They just look frankly like they've got a wedgie. People stare with wry smiles. You never see men wearing ridiculous items of clothing. It really makes us (women)look easily led, and is usually laughable

None of us would look like idiots if we didn’t buy the ridiculous things. It’s entirely possible to leave them on the shelves.

BigSwigs · 21/09/2023 19:01

To make money.

Too multipurpose for me. If you are a serious swimmer you do not want a wedgie. If you want to sunbathe in this you would get rubbish strap marks.

StolenCookie · 21/09/2023 19:02

I think she looks gorgeous in it. The only thing I’d feel is pure envy of her figure!

I think the women on this thread expressing outrage at this costume need to think critically about why they feel so upset about the thought of another woman showing her body in this way. No one is forcing you to look at another person’s body. And if someone is swimming lengths in front of you their body is underwater anyway!

Usernamen · 21/09/2023 19:03

Is there anything more patronising than suggesting women only wear revealing clothes because we’re manipulated into doing so for the ‘male gaze’?

Yup, we silly little women don’t know our own minds, do we! We can’t possibly desire and thrive off male attention, can we?!

I forgot we weren’t allowed to be sexual beings. 🤦‍♀️

I would agree with you, except...speedos

VWT5 · 21/09/2023 19:04

Same at one time when I was looking at Amazon/Ebay for something for serious swimming.
Nearly all advertised as ‘Sexy Swimsuit”…..
Nope, I need my gusset and chest area covered and enough cover to confidently do a tumble-turn or two.

InstructionsUnclear · 21/09/2023 19:04

I also imagine that everyone banging on about it only being for the male gaze only ever wears high neck tops and stuff to the ankles because if you ever show a little cleavage or leg or a bikini you just also be only doing that for the male gaze 🙄

BatshitCrazyWoman · 21/09/2023 19:06

That is indescribably ugly. I don't think it can be 'for the male gaze' as it's not sexy, it looks like she's lopped a bit off her school swimming costume.

MasterBeth · 21/09/2023 19:09

What is the difference between showing some bum cheek or some thigh? It's all just flesh.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 21/09/2023 19:11

All very nice if you’re an exhibitionist.

Blondebutnotlegally · 21/09/2023 19:11

Or you can look at it as we are allowed to be expressive with our clothing and men have to basically look all the same otherwise they are accused of being feminine or straight up homosexual. I'd be pissed if I had the choice between chinos or jeans every day of my bloody life

sep135 · 21/09/2023 19:11

I'm all for female liberation but the arse wedgie bikini perplexes me too. Put bluntly, it cannot be comfortable having all that fabric up your bottom crack.

I also think it looks really unattractive. Naked bottom fine, normal bikini fine just not the ruched wedgie style. Each to their own but a hard no from me.

Yes. It's much, much more patronising to suggest that the only reason anyone could object to it is because they are an uptight prude or jealous of someone's 'great' body ( 'oh, sorry, healthy bmi which doesn't at all conform to beauty standards, oh no dear me no'🙄)
The male gaze and the power of the patriarchy exist and pointing this out empowers women. Pretending it doesn't and that we all have completely free choice flies in the face of both reality and women's interests. It's anti feminist and anti women.
HtH.

Sweetpea1532 · 21/09/2023 19:12

@Wishthiswasntmypost your post made me think of this old 1981 film called 'SoFine' starring Ryan O'Neal. 😅
A desperate faux pas that turned into a trend

Blondebutnotlegally · 21/09/2023 19:12

You are so right. These comments are ironically sexist. Hello I'm a thick and easily led woman who can only survive if a big strong man has looked at me and whistled today

I agree with this. There is nothing wrong with the swimsuit itself, apart from the fact that it’s only women who are meant to wear it.

Your butt and genitals aren't anywhere near your thigh on the average person?😂

What a complete nonsense this is.

‘Pointing this out’ does not empower women as it always seems to take the form of shaming women who choose to flaunt their sexuality.

The only thing that’s anti-women is this latest wave of navel-gazing bullshit feminism that is supremely anti-sex and seeks to punish any woman who doesn’t toe the line under the guise of ‘empowerment’.

Women’s interests my arse. Count me out, thanks.

Sweedey · 21/09/2023 19:20

Ok you're butt is near your thigh, but not the part that is usually shown,

I know what I'm trying to say!

Big difference by removing 1/3 of the bikini bottom to show your ass cheeks....

babyproblems · 21/09/2023 19:21

Imo that model is too tall in the body for that swimsuit and that’s why it’s the ultimate wedgie. I think it’s poorly fitting.
Thats reinforced imo by the fact the legs are not high cut. They are quite low cut actually on the front. So I don’t understand why it’s sitting so high up her arse. If it was high cut at the leg I could see why it would give you a more flattering shape (leg lengthening) assuming you had an ok bum.
But looking at it on the model I think it’s a very poor fit actually.

No, there isn’t. If you have ever worn a bikini then by your argument, and many of the others on here, you’ve done it for the male gaze. If you’ve shown a bit of breast cleavage that’s the EXACT BLOODY SAME as a bit of bum cleavage!!

You’re being sexist and contradictory.

Cornflakes44 · 21/09/2023 19:24

I really hate these swimsuits. I feel like every year stuff gets more and more revealing, side boob, under boob, leggings that have a seam that pushes your butt cheeks apart. I'm quite young and generally not a prude but why is it only women that have to have themselves on display like this.

Ladybrrrd · 21/09/2023 19:24

Everyone's got a bum. What's the huge great deal? Mine's not anything special, but I do have other parts I show off - muscular arms, nice chest. It's got naff all to do with blokes. Not interested in them. But I did work hard to look nice (and you know what yeah, a little sexy) so why can't I be proud?

Men don't (usually) show off their bums because that's not what people (usually) look for. Abs, pecs, calves, traps. That's the equivalent and you see them all the time.
