"Cheeky" swimsuits. Just why?

disappearingfish · 21/09/2023 17:22

I get it for posing on the beach, but why do swimwear makers cut the bums off suits otherwise aimed at the "proper swimming" market. I do not want to see bare arses at 0630 under the bad lighting of my local council swimming.

This, for example. Who buys this? www.arenasport.com/en_uk/006660-women-s-swimsuit-arena-mesh-panels-power-back.html

If I had a gorgeous bottom like that, then I would.

Then you would be an exhibitionist forcing your fetish on other people. If a man walked down the high street or around his leisure centre with his arse out people would rightly condemn him as a perv. I don't see why women should be judged differently for showing their private parts.

Chill out it just a bit of skin. Plenty of men wear speedos where you can pretty much see everything, or wander about with their tops off in summer. Bikinis show a lot of cleavage. Just avert your gaze. If you can't stop gawping at the more exposed bits of people's bodies then I think that's your fetish not theirs.

I am also mystified by this. I like fashion as much as anyone, but picking fabric out of your crack all the time is just not fun.

I expect teenagers to wear wildly impractical swimwear just to prove that they can, but I don't want a fucking wedgie, thanks.

Yet so many women wear thong style underpants everyday, if the women at my gym are anything to go by. It’s old lady pants for me, all the way. Even when I was wasn’t an old lady.

LlynTegid · 22/09/2023 08:10

Fashion, the pressure to get you to spend money on things, before what you have wears out.

TreeTopness · 22/09/2023 08:10

So on this thread we have women saying that women with certain body fat percentages are unattractive, referring to ‘fat, hairy arses’, saying that only women with nice pert bottoms could wear this but most people’s are ‘wobbly’ and ‘saggy’, all whilst claiming they should be banned in the name of ‘feminism’. So, wearing short shorts with bottom cleavage out isn’t feminism, but criticising other women’s bodies is?

I think some women on here need to stop shouting MISOGYNY and start looking at their own internalised misogyny that makes them think it’s acceptable to criticise other women’s bodies, or believer that only small pert bottoms are attractive and that any bottom that is ‘wobbly’, ‘fat’ or ‘hairy’ is unacceptable.

CauliflowerBouquet · 22/09/2023 08:15

To me it looks like the swim suit is just too small for her - she is too tall for it so her bum pokes out. Is it definitely intentional?

Also, I am not sure that standard swimming costumes do actually cover the whole arse, especially if you are pear shaped.

Doingmybest12 · 22/09/2023 08:19

I don't think this costume is made for me and I think the 'inspired by lingerie' and 'cheeky' description says it all.

I lived in Spain and this sort of thing is common. As is topless bathing and they have lots of nudist beaches. And it’s women of all ages, shapes and sizes who go topless and nude. They just don’t care. And I’ve seen such swimming costumes in their public pools too (which are outside and really cool btw).

I much prefer their way of thinking than this thread. Who cares if someone’s bum is on show? Maybe if we relaxed a bit we’d be a bit more like the Spanish and they are MUCH more body positive over there. Maybe if we stopped judging our teenagers wouldn’t have so many issues. Who cares what others are wearing.

I don't think we have the weather to foster this sort of culture (or haven't traditionally had the weather - who knows about the future!). It's hugely different in Spain, Brazil etc when it's red hot for a large proportion of the year.

disappearingfish · 22/09/2023 08:31

I don't count Spain and Brazil as bastions of female empowerment, they have deeply entrenched issues around women's rights, rape culture etc. No, I'm not saying that cheeky swimsuits are the cause of that but it makes me suspicious about who these swimsuits are really designed for.

However, the point of this thread is that if you would be embarrassed to bend over in front of your boss in an arse-less swimsuit, why would you think it's the right thing to wear down the local pool. I practically saw a cervix the other morning when a woman dropped her goggles.

I don't see why buttocks on display is any more inappropriate than bare legs or arms on display. It's just a human body. People should be free to wear as much or as little as they like. It's not illegal to be naked in public.

Do you often bend over in front of your boss? I imagine that's pretty embarrassing even if you are wearing a more modest swimsuit.

disappearingfish · 21/09/2023 17:56

There's clearly a difference between an outline under fabric and bare skin. Otherwise women would just walk round topless with no issues.

I live in fear that a labia makes a break for freedom during a tumble turn.

🤣🤣🤣

I don’t think anyone said they were the bastions of female empowerment, I think they said they have a better attitude towards body positivity and accepting all different types of bodies, which is true, especially if this thread is anything to go by.

I also wouldn’t be comfortable wearing a bikini in front of my boss, so I don’t really get that analogy at all, that’s a daft link to try and force.

JudgeRudy · 22/09/2023 09:39

I'd guess they make them because people buy them. I might wear that. I've got quite a 'bulbous' bum and thick thighs and think this would be comfortable for my body shape and look fine. It's the equivalent of Brazilian cut knickers which I love. It's high cut, hardly a thong.
I wonder why someone might wear a swimsuit with a skirt, or a tankini with low cut boy shorts. These look awful on me. Legs holes are too tight and he bum part is far too low.
There's plenty of variety so I don't see why it should be an issue or even worthy of remark.

disappearingfish · 22/09/2023 09:56

@TreeTopness Brazil is not in any way accepting of different body types. Plastic surgery is deeply entrained in the culture there.

This thread is not representative of UK attitudes, of course it isn't. It's a random bunch of people on a specific social media site.

….you’re taking what I said way too literally and haven’t read my post properly. I made a sarcastic comment about this thread backing up what I previously said about the attitudes on this thread. But actually, our attitudes towards women’s bodies in the U.K. is very poor and this thread is not unique in displaying these attitudes. I also did not say that Brazil and Spain have better attitudes, I said that other posters said they had better attitudes, not that they were the bastions of female empowerment.
I know nothing about Brazil, but I do know Spain and can confirm they do have better attitude towards women’s bodies than we do, but of course, like nearly every single country in the world, they still have issues towards women’s bodies. But this doesn’t take away from the fact that attitudes on this thread from women claiming to be feminists have been awful about women’s bodies.

StarlightLady · 22/09/2023 10:29

No style is compulsory. There’s plenty of choice and different cuts available in swimwear. Wear what you feel good in and what works for you and be less judgey about others doing the same.

HappyPurrrsday · 22/09/2023 10:53

Oh crikey, if I saw somebody wearing that at the pool or beach, I'd presume it was accidental & they were suffering a wedgie.

thefamous5 · 22/09/2023 11:05

I would wear it.

I'm a happily married mother of four, size 18 and certainly do not have a peachy arse, but I genuinely wouldn't care.I don't care if I see anyone else wearing it either.

I'm not trying to attract the male gaze.

I don't care if someone else doesn't like it.

I think it's cute. And I find cheeky bottoms/things more comfortable than big pants, which never seem to sit right.

I spent the nice days we had in the summer/September in a little bikini on a British beach

ShippingNews · 22/09/2023 11:26

Sad that it always seems to be women who fall for this type of sexualised fashion. The average man would never dream of baring his arse cheeks in a swimsuit like this - yet women pull them on and then justify it with comments like " oh it's just skin" . If it was just skin, we'd all get around naked and think nothing of it.

Blueink · 22/09/2023 12:40

Ha ha!

I get it, just wanted to describe the type of visceral reaction I get to these costumes 🤣

Over the last few years noticed a lot of underwear and costumes more skimpily cut at the back, when it’s not a thong or awful Brazilian cut. Find it bloody uncomfortable.

Blueink · 22/09/2023 12:42

This was meant to quote @IAmAnIdiot123

reesewithoutaspoon · 22/09/2023 12:47

I wouldn't wear one, they don't look comfortable, but it does annoy me when this type of sexualised fashion becomes the prevailing look and makes it harder to find other styles.

QualityCorner · 22/09/2023 12:51

Inspired by lingerie? I prefer my swimming costumes to be inspired by swimming.
I'm surprised at Arena as they are a brand associated with competitive swimming. This is more Love Island to me.
Even swimsuits for competitive swim training have become skimpy but isn't it interesting that when elite women race, they wear a compression kneesuit.
This suit is for trying to look attractive whilst posing round the pool, not for swimming.
My personal opinion is that it doesn't look good on anyone.
