(Covid) To think these recommendations are bonkers?

So the government commission into how to memorialise the Covid pandemic has recommended the government implement “A UK-wide day of reflection should be established and held annually.”

Other recommendations include national memorials (10 sites already identified!), oral histories and museums plus additional funding for local authorities to set up their own memorials.

I can’t be the only one who thinks this is nuts and hope the government ignores the recommendations? I genuinely cannot believe people get paid to produce this crap.

I'd like to see a museum outlining all the ridiculous measures we took. Maybe a depiction of playground taped off, or the baby clothes aisle in welsh shops. A covid marshall's hi vis jacket and a scotch egg. Maybe an empty park bench and a knitted face mask?

When we have a flu victims memorial then maybe I'd engage.

Why not post in the Covid section?

A colourful mural of the pallets of Budweiser that were used to block the clothes aisle in Tesco.

And you have to follow an series of confusing and pointless arrows on the floor, directing you through the museum in the most convoluted way possible, ensuring you are inside the venue for as long as possible, passing as many other people as possible.

Everanewbie · 18/09/2023 12:43

Ever seen the Black Mirror episode - Black Museum? My Covid museum would be like that. Artifacts and exhibits of well meaning yet harmful inventions that made the world a darker place.

Calistano · 18/09/2023 12:45

Haha this thread is funny. Maybe an idol, maybe matt Hancocks bonce, you could put a mask on it to pay tribute.

megletthesecond · 18/09/2023 12:45

A better idea would be to make sure we don't let any future pandemics get out of control.

Calistano · 18/09/2023 12:49

I think I lost my faith in humanity when people started clattering pans on their doorstep. I mean seriously wtaf was that all about 😂

And educate the ignorant who still believe govt intervention wasn't necessary. (See above posts for suitable candidates)

They could perhaps do a special "how to escape from the conspiracy theory mindset" course.

Blah blah so tedious, seriously after that cruise ship, which was handily a perfect model of how covid spread/killed it was blatantly obvious it was just another virus, not doomsday. Most propagandised event in history.

somethinghastochangesoon · 18/09/2023 12:57

Maybe we could have a non party like Boris and his merry men didn't have but did have.

WickedSerious · 18/09/2023 12:58

I'll be disappointed if they don't do something with toilet paper.

MN was even more batshit than usual during the 1st lockdown.

It got heeeeeeeeeeated.

@Everanewbie I think a museum of ridiculous measures would be brilliant - then maybe people will remember and learn from the craziness of some of the rules.
I was recounting at the weekend how I had been for a walk with 2 friends and we wanted to go for a drink afterwards. It was December but we couldn't go indoors as the rules were 2 households - and we were a 3. We fancied a glass of mulled wine but we could only drink alcohol with a "substantial" meal. That meal ended up as pate and toast plus a mince pie! All totally bonkers looking back at it.

Calistano · 18/09/2023 13:01

I think it was that Matt Hancock thing on gmtv where he was pretending to cry where Mr Shakespeare got the first vaccine that finally untetethered me. Fucking clown world.

@Calistano same!! Thankfully we have no neighbours to think we were miserable for not taking part but I just couldn’t bring myself to do that 😂

That is what I would like to see. A reminder of what madness ensued.

Wowokthanks · 18/09/2023 13:04

TBH maybe it would be useful for those who had family members who died, and for the rest of us to remember just how easily the government hoodwinked us into the batshittery most of us subscribed to

Wherly · 18/09/2023 13:05

This is some stupid shit.

Nice little water features in hospital grounds sounds about right. Similar to what some have now for cancer etc. I'm not even against some sort of modest government fund, a few mil say, you can apply for to make a nice memorial. Say in schools or care homes that were particularly affected.

As people have pointed out memorialising it on a national level with a state endorsed narrative is extremely off when the narrative is still very much emerging. I read a report the other day that childhood type 1 diabetes is on the rise and the reasons seem to be covid related (either the disease itself or the PH measures). We dont know how to reflect yet because it isn't over and likely won't be for a generation.

NHS worker here and I thought people had absolutely lost their minds.
