Are we classed as "poor" or average

Sorry I couldn't think of a better word.
DH earns around £70k.
I only earn £12ph and work 3 days a week as we have 2 children under 5.
Most of my friends are on slightly more than me an hour but not massively, have maybe slightly nicer but similar houses, only really get their hair done in terms of beauty.. but most of DH's friends partners earn £50+.. have big houses with cinema rooms, bars.. have regular Botox, lip fillers etc.
we live in a 3 bed and semi and have saved since 2018 for a new kitchen.
Are we poor.. or average? I feel such a failure compared to DH's friends wives and I worked bloody hard for my qualifications that are rubbish pay!

If you were poor OP, you wouldn't have to ask.

Applescruffle · 17/09/2023 18:04

"I can't afford a cinema room, am I poor?"

😂😂😂

Fuck off love. There are teenage girls that stay home from school when on their periods because the family can't afford sanitary products.
There was a mum in a foodbank the other week who was so hungry she stepped out onto the street and immediately opened a tin of beans from the bag they gave her to shove in her mouth because she was on the verve of passing out. She'd given every crumb she had to her babies.
There are kids pretending to eat out of empty lunchboxes so their friends can't see they have no food
There's families storing bits of old cardboard up for the winter and chopping up their furniture so they can light fires indoors to stay warm.

Want to feel better that you can't have botox? Go and volunteer at a soup kitchen or something. It will soon put things into perspective.

Oh and your qualifications? There are homeless people with degrees. Don't think there isn't.

Hesma · 17/09/2023 18:04

Single parent here on £21k + some tax credits with 2 kids, one with SEN… I think you’ll survive 🙄

Fizbosshoes · 17/09/2023 18:04

I earn 26k, DH is self employed and his income varies from low to fairly average (real life average, not MN average)
Almost everyone I know where I live has more disposable income than we do, and a more luxurious lifestyle....but I'm under no illusion that we are poor. We chose to live in a fairly expensive area so are surrounded by people who are better off!

Jackydaytona · 17/09/2023 18:05

Um....do you want lip fillers and botox?

As for cinema rooms and bars...how often are they actually used?? Per use I imagine they cost £££££££

I wouldn't want any of the above ^ 🤷

kitsuneghost · 17/09/2023 18:05

There was a post thd other wee saying the median HOUSEHOLD income is 35k so according to that you are way above average.

Kalodi · 17/09/2023 18:05

Higher than average definitely not poor....

To put it into perspective, on another thread I was told I need to accept that I need to "live within my means" and "Stop over reaching" and our household income is 1/2 of yours.

JustKen · 17/09/2023 18:06

DH & I are on about £70k combined, and we both work full-time.

You're not doing too badly.

continentallentil · 17/09/2023 18:06

Well I think you are better off without tombstone teeth and (what I imagine is) poorly done Botox.

You do need to give yourself a clout OP - you are well off as a family.

If you want to earn more make a plan to do that.

And if you want to get your teeth done, earn enough that you don’t have to get it done on the cheap in Turkey..

Spacehopperno1 · 17/09/2023 18:06

You feel “comfortable” but are wondering if you’re actually “poor”? Are you aware that bread is an option when you’re chomping on your cake?

Hummingbird89 · 17/09/2023 18:07

lapsedbookworm · 17/09/2023 17:29

Very poor, on the breadline. The Joseph Rowntree foundation always says that everyone should be entitled to a basic standard of living which includes.a cinema room and regular Botox treatments.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 👏

Bananas1350 · 17/09/2023 18:07

I assume this is a joke post.

Applescruffle · 17/09/2023 18:07

Do you even know how lucky you are that you can save at all for your new kitchen? Or that you even own your own home? In fact, you're lucky that you even have a home.

Whattheflipflap · 17/09/2023 18:08

Your husband alone earns nearly 3x the average income not including your 3 days at 12PH.
youre affluent

mum11970 · 17/09/2023 18:08

Oh do fuck off. Bloody stupid and insulting flaming question. We live on around a third of what you and your husband earn and don’t class ourselves as particularly poor.

Hummingbird89 · 17/09/2023 18:08

Bananas1350 · 17/09/2023 18:07

I assume this is a joke post.

I hope so. What a fucking idiot.

DontGiveMeThatOldCrap · 17/09/2023 18:09

I think you're quite ridiculous, and also bragging. My husband and I live on £1050 a MONTH.

onestepfromgrace · 17/09/2023 18:10

You clearly lack intelligence and awareness. You can’t find a better word to use than poor, don’t you know what a thesaurus is, does this lack of intelligence extend to research skills? It certainly extends to numbers and your inability to budget is probably why you think you are poor. Do any of these words describe your household?

Are we classed as "poor" or average
Evaka · 17/09/2023 18:11

Why are people responding to what's clearly a joke post?

hedgehogblanket · 17/09/2023 18:11

I do agree OP should be comfortable but actually one person earning 70k will be taking home less than two people on a combined salary of 70k.

flappersdelight · 17/09/2023 18:12

I'd class you as suffering from being unable to keep up with the Jones'. You're neither poor nor average.

SuperGinger · 17/09/2023 18:13

Presumably you also get child benefit and some government subsidised childcare. It sounds okay but if you live in London it won't go too far.

sadaboutmycat · 17/09/2023 18:13

I have no words.

thesnailandthewhale · 17/09/2023 18:14

Single person, income £25k.
Very fortunate that I bought my house years ago and have a relatively small mortgage now.
No debts, (other than mortgage), which means I can sleep at night. I don't consider myself poor. If I had credit cards racked up with Botox etc then yes I would consider myself poor. It's not always as straight forward as it seems op.

Kay286 · 17/09/2023 18:15

Not poor but clearly very ignorant.
