AIBU to think... 'here we go again?'

Anyone watching? I've always said 'innocent until proven guilty' but also 'there is no smoke without fire'.

Having been sexually assaulted myself, one of the stories seem so similar to mine.

What's your thoughts?

This is the most confusing post, I know. I just don't know how I feel.

In this day and age why didn’t the women go to the police? Russell Brand is hardly a very powerful figure.

RTFT and watch the actual documentary. The reasons why women don't go to the Police in these situations have been covered many times.

Why do you keep asking the same question that has been asked and answered upthread?

TheShinmeister · 17/09/2023 09:57

I think he’s hit a few nerves with the government. He’s called out the greedy bankers for example. He’s outspoken.

He's extremely powerful, with very good lawyers. The 16 year old tried to raise this with his publishers and his lawyers immediately shut her down.
Please don't victim blame. It's very hard for a woman to be beloved of rape at the best of times, let alone when they have very good lawyers.

Clearly he’s been a total asshole to women in the past and deserves to be named and shamed. He is openly regretful about his past and claims to have changed but i still understand why the women want to speak out, The illegal accusations should have gone to police in an ideal world. There are questions about why he continued with bbc when they were aware of his behaviour. However he isn’t currently working with and large media companies.

If you think the attention and focus this has been given is not mainly because his current work is about challenging powerful interests you are totally clueless. He is not right wing. He is anti corruption and antiestablishment. That’s the real issue

His behaviour, while horrible, is likely similar to that of many celebrities in the nineties and early nougties. It’s nothing like Saville who was protected by powerful interests and not exposed in his lifetime despite complaints to the police.

Why are the Sunday times not investigating Ghilane maxwells client list? That would be story of the year. This story is clearly because of other agendas.

just yuck to this entire sentiment

plus buying the whole it's cos he's antiestablishment and against corporate machines crap ....... jeez- he's famous and been allowed to rape and abuse women from his state sanctioned position of power. How anyone can truly believe RB is antiestablishment when he is a product of its dark side utterly baffles me

Have you actually seen what women go through when they are interviewed by police in sexual abuse and rape cases? Have you seen the misogynistic questions they are asked? Have you seen the absolutely pitiful conviction rates for women? Now multiply that by a million when you have someone much richer, much more powerful than them and you really have to ask why more women don't go to the police. It is abhorrent that in this country rape and sexual assault has basically been legalised as they don't give a shit about women.

Given that rape convictions are incredibly low, could it be that many women don't think there is any point going to the police?

Jimmy Savile was not honest and upfront. He wasn’t who he purported to be. To compare RB to Savile is disgusting

This reply is disgusting.

They both relied on their power to intimidate victims. Both knew exactly what they were doing.

StBrides · 17/09/2023 10:02

Have you seen the misogynistic questions they are asked?

Some of those questions and much of that misogyny has been prolific on this site (and twitter) since yesterday.

ChocolateyBiccy · 17/09/2023 10:03

I totally disagree that RB is not a powerful figure. He has highly-paid, aggressive lawyers and many others looking after his interests. I can totally see why people have been afraid to come forward.

StBrides · 17/09/2023 10:03

@TheShinmeister Russell brand is very rich which makes him very powerful

Where was RB honest and upfront that he was grooming a 16yo girl and referring to himself as her Daddy? That when she told him she was a virgin he told her ‘my baby’?

Where was he honest and upfront that he pinned his friend down on a bed when he was naked whilst she screamed to be free?

pollo8 · 17/09/2023 10:03

I agree with Brand on a lot of things – for example, I was suspicious of the vaccine push, concerned about free speech etc.

But I absolutely won't be defending him on this. The accounts sound convincing to me.

There's also the wider context of just the what fuck goes on in the TV/showbiz industries where time and time again, sexual predators are indulged and worshipped.

unbelieveable22 · 17/09/2023 10:02

This reply is disgusting.

They both relied on their power to intimidate victims. Both knew exactly what they were doing.

They both also said things/displayed actions which could be easily misinterpreted as less serious than they actually were, so some people just wrote them off as 'a creep' instead of considering that they were actually predators. They both also abused their power time after time.

CherryMaDeara · 17/09/2023 09:57

Why do you keep asking the same question that has been asked and answered upthread?

What, and having unlimited resources (legal team, PR team) and being in a position of significant influence (millions of followers, influential friends and supporters such as Elon Musk – the richest person in the world – doesn’t count as being a powerful figure?

FFS, even your uni lecturer or boss is a powerful figure, let alone a globally recognised figure with many millions of pounds in the bank. 🙄

TheShinmeister · 17/09/2023 09:57

My god, imagine that's your takeaway from all this. You're one post away from screaming WAKE UP SHEEPLE

And your other comment about Savile, well that's a perfect example of why sexual predators are able to rinse and repeat their behaviour.

waterlego · 17/09/2023 10:07

@TheShinmeister, if you want to be ‘enlightened’ as to what has been said in the thread, the answer is to….read the thread!
Asking other posters to spoon feed information to you makes you look a bit dim/lazy/entitled.

He is not exactly unique in "calling out" greedy bankers. It's also a bit of a joke that he calls other people greedy while making millions grifting on youtube and rumble.

Bearpawk · 17/09/2023 10:10

My best friend is a director and came up through the channel 4 academy around 10-15 years ago.
She was told on her induction day by an older woman 'never go into a room alone with Russell Brand'.
It's been an open secret for years.

FoxClocks · 17/09/2023 10:11

RB says that he is very much influenced by the 12 step programme for overcoming addiction and part of that is to acknowledge the harm you have caused and seek out those who you could apologise to or make amends with, where they would find that helpful. That doesn't seem to tie in with what is being revealed about him being very litigious.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 17/09/2023 10:11

His wife must be devestated

Slowlylosingmymind101 · 17/09/2023 10:11

@Bearpawk so why did it take channel 4 all this time to say something and investigate and hand girls over to him? Funny time to.do it. By all means if he has raped someone/people he should be held accountable. But .ayne channel 4 should be held responsible also
