To think that postbox toppers are an aberration and those who produce them should be shot at dawn (I should say 'light hearted' here but it goes against the grain)

That really.

Postbox toppers. Those crocheted monstrosities decorating every postbox within a 500 metres of GAILS bakery.

Why?

My AIBU is am I unreasonable for thinking they add no value to life and represent a huge drain on resources that could be better put to work creating reusable string bags.

How do you feel about padlocks on bridges @IrateAndUnhinged

That might be a whole new debate!

IrateAndUnhinged · 10/09/2023 12:01

I am struggling to post an image of the one that haunts my waking hours.

For full disclosure its near a Christopher's which I believe is an independently run cousin of GAILs but also charges a small fortune for a perfectly crafted bun.

Thank you. Next time the rugby is preventing me from communicating with my all male household I might quite enjoy a little chat about that.

I think it’s lovely. Anything that makes some people smile can only be a good thing in my book.

A racist joke? Someone falling down a manhole? Mrs Brown's Boys?

People smile at some terrible things.

longestlurkerever · 10/09/2023 12:06

I think Paris council had to remove a lot of the padlocks from the Pont Du Neuf as they were collectively so heavy they risked the bridge collapsing into the Seine. Perhaps post box topping will reach similar extremes, with teetering towers of knitted animals causing a health and safety nightmare.

I'm indifferent, but hated all the jubilee and coronation ones, as I don't give a shiny shit about the monarchy and think they should be abolished.

We had a lovely Christmas one near me a few years ago

@RoseMarigoldViolet that's not more. That's the same ones. Repeated. #NotPlayingFair

But pp have clearly not read the whole thread, op

WotNoUserName · 10/09/2023 12:12

I like them. We don't have any in my town, except one in Tesco that can't be nicked. Which explains the sort of town I live in.

The next town has them, and a recently opened GAIL's. And a Waitrose. That explains the sort of town that is.

Mainly I'm just jealous of people who can knit or crochet because I have failed at both.

Are you jealous OP? As well as irate and unhinged?

IT COULD HAPPEN.

no one believed that global warming could happen...

WE COULD BE CLOSE TO A TOPPER TIPPING POINT

Are those little crocheted sanitary 'napkins' round the edge?

OP posts:
jays · 10/09/2023 12:49

I love them! I get quite emotional thinking about people actually taking time and having the skill to make them and there’s something just so 70’s/80’s about them in a world full of tech and mobiles and slickness I think they’re just really human!

Of course they aren't, ffs!

IrateAndUnhinged · 10/09/2023 13:04

So there is a clear association on this thread between something taking a lot of effort and therefore being of value.

But just because something represents effort it doesn't automatically make it worth having.

Or even being very good - although I appreciate that this is subjective.

So my argument stands - please crochet away. It is a noble task. As someone said upthread it keeps people on the straight and narrow. But don't assume that because your 'whimsical' reimagining of a mountain glade with forest folk gambolling at the joy of spring brings you joy it will do so to others.

Postboxes are beautiful as they are and, more importantly, they are in the streets which we all have to use.

I'm not massively fond of them and I'm suspicious as to where they come from. I never see one actually being assembled/installed, they just seem to spring up overnight. And I live near TWO Gail's ...

So this isn’t a post asking what people think of them but more a post to convince people to dislike them, even if they like them.

ShanghaiDiva · 10/09/2023 13:13

@jays
it’s a post to while away the time as op’s family is watching the rugby.

Fizbosshoes · 10/09/2023 13:16

I know runners who plan routes to see as many different toppers as possible near Christmas 😊
I'm too lazy to do that but I don't have a problem with them as a concept. They are usually removed quite quickly after Xmas so the post boxes remain naked and unadorned for most of the year!

I doubt they're imagining any such thing, tbh. Why should they have to take all the miserable bastards into account when they do something nice?
It doesn't affect you in the slightest.

Harmless bits of whimsical fun in a grim world. YABVU.

Agree…many people get a lot of joy including the local children!
