Postbox toppers. Those crocheted monstrosities decorating every postbox within a 500 metres of GAILS bakery.

Why?

My AIBU is am I unreasonable for thinking they add no value to life and represent a huge drain on resources that could be better put to work creating reusable string bags.

I’m a knitter and crocheted and am not mad on these things. Unless the maker is going to be disciplined and take them away after a very short space of time, they are going to get manky pretty quickly. They should decorate their own front doors if they really want to do this kind of thing.

Never seen one, never heard of Gail and I hope it remains this way.

and Gail’s is just Pret for people who think they’re too good for Pret

I don't like them nearly as much as I like the ones you sometimes see round tree trunks. So jaunty! Love it.

They're cute as buttons and a lovely harmless way to cheer up something ordinary .

We have a lady that does them locally and I love them. They are replaced regularly and always look good. They will have a seasonal theme.

We have had a summer trail of them for children. Unfortunately one of them has been stolen by teenagers

I like them. Especially the one we have at Halloween outside our Co-op. Clever and quirky.

The kids used to enjoy going round the nearby pretty, historic town looking for them at Christmas time. They are too grown up for that now, sadly.

I think they’re brilliant, also because I assume it’s mainly women out doing it it’s underrated. If banksy did one it would be worth thousands. My friend does it, it s a true art form.

I live in a old woollen mill area. Every summer there is a textiles festival called "Woven in XXX", and the yarn bombing ramps up massively. You'd hate it @IrateAndUnhinged.

I've only ever seen one in a village on holiday and I wondered who got the ingenious idea to do it. It really warmed my heart.
On a side note, never heard of Gail's, I assumed it was a greasy spoon rather than a naice ham establishment. Every day's a school day on MN.

They're naff and I really dislike the cutesy stuff. I admire the skill but postboxes look so much better without. No need to inflict your performance crochet on them

I am a firm Republican, but my favourite part of the Coronation was the fantastic postbox toppers in my small town.
So I'm afraid I don't agree with you.

The town I live in is riddled with them - all within 500m of Gails bakery. AND there is CCTV to protect them because the keep getting stolen.

They always look like saggy discarded toys after a few days.....

I feel a bit bad - our Gail's Pantry chain is in no way affiliated with GAIL'S Bakery, so the proximity of toppers to Gail establishments must be a coincidence!

I bet their sandwiches are cheaper, though.

I love them! My village has them on the postbox and on bollards.

I had never heard of Gail’s and it seems my nearest one is 80 miles away.

Can't say I have any strong view. More concerned with the lowering of the quality of the postal service and the closure or reduced hours of Post Offices.

I wish people would keep their crafty tat inside their own four walls.

Maybe there's a correlation. My MIL lives right by a Waitrose, is similarly inflicted in the topper department she's not had post for two weeks.

Doesn't affect the aesthetic of the box in the same way so ok in my mind. Niggling worry about post boxes as maternity homes though.
