Why on earth are people still banging on about testing for covid??! If she is positive she is presumably/hopefully still going ahead with the wedding so its pointless! We don't test for flu, a cold. Utter madness. I hope she had a marvellous wedding.

Because it is NOT THE FLU.

Flu is worse though. The covid hysteria is truly bizarre. I baffled by anyone who still tests for it, as are most people.

Awaits the waffling about vulnerable people who would be totes fine with getting noro or flu ….

I can’t believe people on here are still banging on about covid. I’d genuinely be more worried about catching a stomach bug than covid anyway!

I’ve always felt like that, I remember saying it in 2020 also.

Seems some people really have learned nothing in the past few years.

Covid is not a cold. 🙄🙄

FlipFlop1987 · 09/09/2023 20:58

Sister has Covid at the moment, her third go as she is in social care, this is by far the worst strain she has had. She’s normally pretty good whilst ill and powers through but this time she’s floored, I’ve never known her have a full week off work. Her worst symptom now is nausea. Her 3 year old has had diarrhoea for 5 days now, most likely got it too.
I don’t think we should get like we were 3 years ago but it it’s still a very nasty illness and I for one don’t want to be getting it whilst 9 months pregnant so being cautious still would be best for everyone

No, you're right, it's not.

But flu is fucking dangerous, can kill, leave people with post-viral illness long-term. As can many illnesses.

I don't doubt Covid is dangerous for some but plenty of illnesses are, and it's eye-rolling that people seem to think dangerous/infectious diseases were created in late 2019.

Oh and a lot of the "Covid destroys everyone's internal organs and will disable us all!" stuff is based on weak studies and promoted by professional doom-mongers and unscrupulous internet grifters.

Not saying people aren't ever badly affected by it. They are. But people - mainly vulnerable but sometimes not - have been killed by flu for years and in 2018 there was none of this hand-wringing: did you not care? Off the top of my head, it was staggeringly high in 2014-15 (may be wrong).

Covid, noro - neither is great really is it? I wouldn't fancy catching either. Or flu.

"Bizarre" is the right word - excellent post.

And these muppets are no doubt vaccinated to the hilt and would take more if offered. I despair for the future of the human race!

If covid or a.n.other pandemically-potential virus presents as noro does, you wouldn't see me for dust.

Take off your tin foil hat. This bullshit is ridiculous.

You are wrong. A lot of people have died from COVID. Many others still have serious complications. It is not the bloody flu.

Sadly, the slow and shoddy response by the UK government had led many to think it wasn’t serious. It was. It is still an issue, especially in the UK where so many have such a cavalier attitude.

loulouljh · 09/09/2023 21:12

Did you see my first sentence when I agreed it wasn't the flu?

Or the later one when I said some people were badly affected?

The point I think you missed it that flu isn't nothing and never was. Maybe we've just had centuries of "minimising" on that one, leading people to claim they have the flu when they have a sniffling cold.

There's more than one potentially dangerous illness out there. Always was. Most of the world has had/vaccinated against Covid so it has been, for many, defanged. Doesn't mean people won't ever get a nasty dose, or be seriously ill, or even die. But that's true for many other viruses, bacterial infections etc that don't seem to be fashionable to be in hysterics about.

Many people die from flu too.

People are so dramatic about covid. More on and find something else to worry about.

Comments here make me glad I don’t live in the UK. Not only is the critical reasoning seriously lacking, the pervasive attitude of “I’m okay and sod anyone else” is unpleasant.

Vaccination levels in the UK are lower than they should be and large parts of the world have very low levels. Figures in much of Africa are terrible but the Western- centric UK doesn’t care about that.

I didn't say this, nor did many other posters.

Anyway, this thread about the poor bride has been totally derailed by this (and I replied too so also partly to blame).

I think as a society we must be considerate of each other, not spread illnesses if we can help it, but stop this hyper-focus on a single pathogen above all else. Most have

Very odd during covid we had no flu. Mysterious.

Not mysterious at all. Lockdown, social distancing, masks, prevent flu as well as Covid. In fact, more effectively than Covid, as flu is less infectious.

Not saying that we should do all these things JUST to prevent seasonal flu; but the reason for flu reduction during Covid is obvious, and doesn't imply any evil conspiracy.

Well you can certainly bet that I will take any vaccination against Covid or flu (or Noro, if there were one) that is offered to me. And anyone who would DARE to get between my own and my family's BASIC HUMAN RIGHT to vaccinations (for any other reason than that other people are in greater need and the supply is limited) is my MORTAL ENEMY.

Before vaccinations, about one-third of the human race died before the age of five. Vaccinations are not the only reason for the vast reduction in childhood mortality, but they are one of the reasons.

In what way is flu worse than Covid? Covid is new and lasting repercussions of having had the disease are yet unknown. People have "long Covid" now with lasting symptoms past acute illness. Post-mortems on people who had Covid have shown inflammation in the brain, kidney, and heart, for example. There concern that in 10-20 years we will see chronic illness among Covid survivors regardless of severity of initial infection. Initial speculation is possible increase in dementia, heart and kidney problems. I haven't seen any information about lasting effects of flu. Nor does flu have multi-systems effects. So, I'm confident you are misinformed.

That's the 'stuff' being spread by the downplayers/deniers on social media. Look at excess death rates (before they re-adjusted for covid deaths), look at increased morbidity stats. This is way worse than the flu or noro, morbidity and mortality wise. And will swamp the health care system with illness & disability. Flu and norovirus are BSL-2. SARS-CoV2 is BSL-3, for a start.

Here's some links to good studies, for a start. It isn't just hitting the vulnerable, we are all vulnerable. Mitigating risks is not the same as lockdown - it protects you, it protects others, and decreases opportunities for the virus to mutate.

I googled it and there are no approved vaccines for norovirus 🤔
They are doing trials right now but the results don't sound that good to me.

I too googled Norovirus vaccine when recovering from it, and it's too much of an evolving virus {Much like the common cold} to be capable of creating a reliable vaccine.

Human immunity lasts only a few months after catching it- Interestingly, I read that people with blood group O+ are more susceptible to getting it more severely it than other blood groups.

{I'm O+ } 😬
