AIBU to feel think this woman has the maturity of a 6 year old, and the self-awareness of a corpse?

The headline gives you an idea...

"I’m a single mum who’s turned to food banks after spending £1k on my bloke’s holiday – when we got home I was ghosted"

The details in the story show a woman who is breathtakingly irresponsible...

www.thesun.co.uk/fabulous/23749211/single-mum-ghosted-after-paying-for-boyfriends-holiday/

Does she expect seriously sympathy for her astounding fecklessness and utter stupidity?

I judge people who get all frothy after reading clickbait in The Sun. It is gutter journalism designed to stoke division.

The whole paper is a benefit-bashing piece of shit.

That article is an interpretation of that woman's life. The paper knows what it is doing - the underlying narrative is 'the government is doing fine, people in poverty only have themselves to blame'.

floribunda18 · 02/09/2023 06:14

Well done for falling for basic click bait @harerunner

What happens is that so-called journalists find a dupe. They tell them their story and this is often completely different from that printed as the "journalist" puts their own spin on it, often in a way to provoke outrage or hatred. The dupe is too poor to sue them.

Tabloids just spread hatred and fear and encourage people to argue amongst themselves.

itsgettingweird · 02/09/2023 06:22

It's worrying that others feel the need to warn others not to do this.

I'm not sure whether I'm be insulted that these people think we're all stupid and need a PSA or feel sorry for them thinking this was ok until they got burned.

harerunner · 02/09/2023 06:23

@ReleasetheCrackHen

How is she a “grabby cow” when she’s literally been robbed of £1k of money by twat who used her for a free Greek holiday, free room and board, free lobster/champagne? If anyone was “grabby” it was him!

You're being ridiculous... He didn't rob her of anything! She WILLINGLY paid for it all - She even says as much!... And there was no evidence of any coercion.

And who the hell buys lobster dinners when it means borrowing from your parents? The guy was grabby, but she willingly indulged him.

I do have a lot of sympathy for those people who need food banks who genuinely find themselves in hard times, but not for the fame-hungry and feckless fool.

Besides, how irresponsible do you have to be to invite a guy on a foreign holiday with their young kids after a few cinema/dinner dates?

This level of vitriol towards someone is unhealthy.

You also don't seem to understand how tabloid journalism works - her words will have been twisted, the photos are staged to make gullible readers all wound up.

Riapia · 02/09/2023 06:31

Would it be better for the kids to go hungry rather than use a food bank?

Yes, i realise it's clickbait... but she's clearly a fame hungry tool as this isn't the first article! But yes, they baited me, and they reeled me in, so more fool me.

I am still incredulous how some posters feel sorry for this woman though, and seem incapable of giving her any agency, effectively infantilising her. In fact, it's those who are doing that who are insulting this woman most, because they're effectively implying she has the mental capacity of a small child.

No, but that doesn't change how irresponsible she has been.

@MidnightOnceMore

My feelings in my post are more directed towards @ReleasetheCrackHen and the absurd level of sympathy she's showing, and her complete unwillingness to expect this woman to display any morsel of responsibility! It's insulting and patronising to infantilise women in this way, and to always make them out to be hapless victims of men, irrespective of circumstances.

I'm not sure why you read The Sun if you have concerns about it being insulting and patronising to infantilise women in this way - that's their standard approach.

The Sun is a piece of shit. What do you even read it for? It only exists to make gullible readers hate their fellow citizens.

Vettrianofan · 02/09/2023 06:45

Canisaysomething · 01/09/2023 23:54

She's not telling her story for sympathy. It says she's sharing her story to warn others of trusting men too quickly. She knows she messed up. No need for the pile on.

Only one poster here that has the ability to read between the lines 🙌

floribunda18 · 02/09/2023 06:47

What do you feel the main purpose of the article is, OP?

I think the purpose is to spread hatred about those using food banks and create a class of "undeserving poor" we can distance ourselves from.

I'd suggest you direct your anger at those who have created a society where food banks have proliferated and are much needed by many people.

Isn't being understanding a positive trait?

I'm interested in what you get out of judging others so harshly?

That woman has been manipulated by a tabloid paper. The editor has specifically commissioned a piece about 'undeserving idiot uses food bank' to make readers think a certain thing. The depressing things is it works on so many people.

transformandriseup · 02/09/2023 07:05

I am not sure this woman has done this on purpose, some people (including some I know) are genuinely not very bright at all, they struggle with self awareness and also money management. She got scammed now and now has to rely on food banks.

Whatswhatwhichiswhich · 02/09/2023 07:13

That makes me feel sick. I’ve had to use food banks because I’ve had zero money, had a mental breakdown and lost my job and was on the bones of my arse. It’s not a backup for being irresponsible and outright stupid with your own and other peoples money. Stupid stupid woman to invite a complete stranger to her children on holiday and leave him alone with them too.

Pottyberry · 02/09/2023 07:14

Not clicking on a Sun click bait link, and disappointed so many others will.

caramelsauce · 02/09/2023 07:14

The bit that horrified me was that she said he spent more time with her kids than he did her, taking them out for walks with the little one in the pram. How can you trust a guy you’ve only been on a few dates with to look after your children, especially those young enough to be in a pram.
She was definitely not financially responsible but she was probably in the moment on holiday wanting to enjoy it but now she’s realised hopefully she will be more financially savvy.

GreyNomad · 02/09/2023 07:17

Silly OP. She's not a just brainless twat. Women are ALWAYS victims. Always. Didn't you realise?

Riverlee · 02/09/2023 07:18

So she has hit the headlines twice, once for ordering the pizza, and now for this holiday situation. She likes going to the papers, doesn’t she.

FilthyforFirth · 02/09/2023 07:20

tt9 · 02/09/2023 00:02

what's getting to me is that she let's a man she's only known for a few weeks be alone with her kids?! eg. take baby for a walk...

Yep I came on to comment about this. Who the hell lets some random bloke you've had a few dates with look after your children alone. What a feckless mother. Ugh.

cakefortea22 · 02/09/2023 07:21

I mean she's not the brightest bulb is she. But I'm a bit perplexed by all the hate. She was generous that's all. I'm presuming she had good intentions and she was lied to and conned. I just don't really get the hate for this one. She was with her parents so presumably they could help with her kids. She's obviously trying to recoup some of the money by humiliating herself further and selling the story. People of all ages and background get scammed online by people they think they're going to have a happy relationship with, it's very sad I think.

Twiglets1 · 02/09/2023 07:22

I'm guessing "not his type" is the skint type.

I see it as idiot bashing

BakingBeanz · 02/09/2023 07:35

Well done on having the exact reaction the Sun journalist intended you to have.

I referred a single mum to the Food bank not long ago and have been told she's just got back from a nice holiday in Spain. People are cheeky.

Makes me irate.
