Do you drink every day on holiday?

Wondering about this. Normally I stick to weekends for a few drinks, with the odd mid week couple of glasses of wine at an events or somesuch.

But on holiday we drank every day for a week. A beer or cocktail or two before dinner, and then sharing a bottle of wine for example. Had a weekend of no alcohol after coming home, just to get a break, but we're away this weekend again so will drink this weekend too.

If you drink, do you drink quite a bit more on holiday?

In my summer holidays I do Greece, Portugal, Spain etc...
But when we go away for winter sun I don't. No idea why, only really thought about it after reading this thread 🤷🏻‍♀️

Why do people on Mumsnet have to be so dramatic? You feel like screaming? You wouldn’t… just go on a different kind of holiday without the fuss?

i feel like my blood is congealing when I am working sometimes.
I don't want that when on holiday, too.
I have relatives who ... go out to eat. That's most their idea of recreation. Or something else sitting down. Like watching a movie. Or maybe a concert. Or watching sport in person. Much of my 'holidays' are going to see these relatives who live far away.

Thus sometimes their idea of spending quality time together means doing what they like doing which is sitting around. I love them but it's blood-congealing to just sit around for long periods.

Yes. I definitely drink more often. Not heavy drinking. A couple of glasses. But definitely more often than on a work day!

irregularegular · 01/09/2023 15:10

No no no absolutely not. Barely ever as I want to drive and explore etc. I’ve never understood the weird drinking every day and eating to excess because it’s summer thing

Having a couple of glasses of wine each evening is not going to stop us from doing plenty of driving and exploring in the day!!! Or, for that matter, doing some exploring by foot or public transport in the evening. In fact, I'd even go as far as to say that I could have a small beer with my lunch and still explore! Or hike or swim or cycle or go sightseeing or.... We're hardly drunk and comatose from dawn to dusk. There is (huge) middle ground that most people don't consider "weird".

I'm a teacher. So i've been on holiday for 6 weeks. I can count on one hand the days I've not had a drink.

Even started at 10am on 2 Sundays with bubbles in bed with FWB and then slow drinking through the day. They were fabulous days.

😂Sorry, really not teacher bashing, but there have been so many threads on MN where teachers write how they spend most of the holidays on prep and admin! They didn't mention the 6 week drinking spree.

luckylavender · 01/09/2023 15:21

No I don't increasingly.

If you read 20 posts by teachers in the summer holidays and 19 of them say they're working and 1 says they've spent the summer drinking, it would be teacher bashing a tad unreasonable to assume the other 19 were doing no work and having a 6 week drinking spree but lying about it. I expect you were joking though. I'll go back to my planning, which I prefer to do sober.

SamW98 · 01/09/2023 15:45

On holiday I have a beer with lunch then drink wine with dinner and end up in a cocktail bar.

I drink more than at home but not really to excess - it’s my holiday and my time to relax and enjoy.

tedybear · 01/09/2023 15:55

Yes and I pretty much don't ever drink at home! I'm always driving and I don't like drinking at home. Mainly because I love a cocktail so can't be bothered making them at home.

I drink them everyday on holiday usually during the day I'd have 1 or 2 as well as some in the evening 😃

Last time I had a drink was my summer holiday in July and next time might be in a few weeks when I go away again.

Do people who have a lot of booze on holiday... have very sedentary jobs the rest of the time?

My job is very sedentary. I feel like screaming at the thought of sitting around drinking while on holiday. For me that would be pure hell (an anti-holiday even).

I don't drink loads on holiday, though do drink every day - every evening, and many lunch times.

But I'm not doing nothing during the day - we'd be out exploring or doing something, but we like a drink with lunch when away sometimes too.

Just back from a holiday and we were busy most days.

I teach in an infant school - so don't have a sit down at desk type job.

We don't really do all inc type holidays though did do one last winter, after the covid restrictions. Just me and dh, long haul winter sun, adults only, all inc. We made a pact with one another not to have the first alcoholic drink until lunchtime at the earliest! We did do a lot of sitting/laying down in loungers though. It was nice as a one off type break, and what we needed at the time.

God, I don't know how you all do it, unless you're all young whippersnappers! I drank like that on holiday when I was in my 20s, but not since I had dc, and certainly not now I'm 50. If I drink more than a couple of days in a row I just feel physically and mentally a bit rubbish. We also have reasonably active holidays - sightseeing, walking, swimming in the sea - so it's not like I'd want to lie on a lounger all day and recover.

I'm a teacher too @Thereasonidid , but even in my fairly hard partying days at the beginning of my career I couldn't have managed every day for 6 weeks with day time drinking too! Weekends only for me now during the summer break, bit more when away.

I'm 50y and having a couple of drinks or more in an evening definitely wouldn't leave me hungover the next day. At leastperi-menopause hasn't prevented that!

I don't drink to get drunk - I hate the feeling. But can certainly manage a few drinks, spread over an afternoon/day, on holiday without issues. Infact I can manage it more when on holiday as can go to bed when I like and get up when I like too, which helps. On holidays we tend to go to bed earlier and sleep in a little later than when at home working.

I'm also benefitting from having been quite poorly before I went away for a few weeks so not been able to take my strongest medication - which restricts my alcohol intake. I'd also been on a lot of ABs in the run up, so not drank for a good while either.

Girasoli · 01/09/2023 20:42

I hardly every drink at home, but have had a glass of wine mixed with sprite most days on holiday with either lunch or dinner. I think I eat more healthily on holiday though - its so hot all I want to eat is tomato/cucumber salad and a bit of cheese (and gelato)

WeetabixTowels · 01/09/2023 20:44

I love a pint by the pool! I rarely drink at home but I do indulge a bit more on holiday. I usually have a lager shandy or 3 in the daytime and yea probably every day.

I have an active job but tend to be active daytime on holiday and drink in the evening
I know what you mean though. I can see that some people that work at a desk all day might not want to be sat around on holiday too whereas those that have a crazy active job may want to lounge about a bit more.

DailyMaui · 01/09/2023 21:01

Depends on the holiday. I have very fond memories of a holiday to Sorrento where Prosecco was part of breakfast... I was quite fond of my morning buzz as we visited Pompeii and Herculaneum.

We were in Croatia earlier this year and I probably had a beer at lunchtime and half a bottle of wine with dinner. Not every day and it depended on the heat.

But I'm about to go to France and be with family and that's a whole other wine drinking thing. We will have half a bottle of Rose each at lunch and lots of wine in the evening. My dad was asking me about what wine/what amounts/what type for weeks... he went shopping for the wine yesterday and it was "a big deal."

VestaTilley · 01/09/2023 21:02

No, because my tolerance is so low nowadays that I’d feel rough if I did. I like a small glass of wine at lunch or cocktail before dinner, but with a 4 year old DS I do non-drinking days on holiday, as even one drink now gives me that horrible feeling in my mouth in the morning!

Fundays12 · 01/09/2023 21:04

Yes but never more than 1 or 2 drinks once the kids are sleeping.

Yes I WFH on a laptop most of the time. And I feel absolutely wonderful parking myself on a sun lounger for 8 hours a day roasting in the sun for several days on end.
I also like to explore the area and do a boat trip or two but my pool days involve doing nothing with my headphones in.

And evenings are about finding nice place to eat under the stars followed by a cocktail bar with music playing in background.

Im not a big drinker but on holiday I absolutely love a few cocktails each evening and it’s a Baileys nightcap.

timberho · 01/09/2023 22:01

Yes drink more, but a drink in the day is still a rare treat and definitely not everyday (eg a special lunch with a view!) as don't like to feeling tired or groggy after one daytime drink.

Catusrusty · 01/09/2023 22:18

No I don't really drink much at all anyway due to my shit body which cannot cope with many things including alcohol.

It's latest wheeze is to turn the only slim part of my body (my ankles) into bloated sausages should I so much as sniff the wine.

Titsywoo · 01/09/2023 22:20

No I don't drink much on holiday - maybe more than I would at home but that is nothing! I would hate to feel hungover on the rare breaks that I get and I get hungover very easily since I turned 40 and hit perimenopause!

KimberleyClark · 02/09/2023 21:24

Yes. We do all inclusive cruises. But we do try not to drink at lunchtime.

ReleasetheCrackHen · 02/09/2023 21:30

No. Perhaps 1 really good glass of local wine once a week when on holiday just to taste it. That’s it. Nothing else with alcohol.

I’ve seen what alcohol does.
It’s a class 1 carcinogen that causes 3.5% of all cancer deaths.

whereas skin cancer causes 1% of all female cancer deaths & 2% of all male cancer deaths.

I go on holiday and watch people lather on the sun scream and then get blotto. It’s truly bizzarre?

43ontherocksporfavor · 02/09/2023 23:24

@ReleasetheCrackHen Wow! 😂
