Do you drink every day on holiday?

Wondering about this. Normally I stick to weekends for a few drinks, with the odd mid week couple of glasses of wine at an events or somesuch.

But on holiday we drank every day for a week. A beer or cocktail or two before dinner, and then sharing a bottle of wine for example. Had a weekend of no alcohol after coming home, just to get a break, but we're away this weekend again so will drink this weekend too.

If you drink, do you drink quite a bit more on holiday?

You need more alcohol than ever when you're camping!

A wine box is practically a camping essential!

Thereasonidid · 31/08/2023 23:24

Yes

I'm a teacher. So i've been on holiday for 6 weeks. I can count on one hand the days I've not had a drink.

Even started at 10am on 2 Sundays with bubbles in bed with FWB and then slow drinking through the day. They were fabulous days.

Started detoxing on Sunday ready for term beginning tomorrow.

mdinbc · 31/08/2023 23:31

Yes. To me it's part of relaxing and socializing which we do daily while on vacation. Never too much, but still...

GrandTheftWalrus · 31/08/2023 23:43

Last year it was beers from 3pm. Couple of vodkas before dinner. Eat my body weight then back on the vodka till the bar closed.

Hence me saying earlier my dad is warning the hotel about us.

God, I don't know how you all do it, unless you're all young whippersnappers! I drank like that on holiday when I was in my 20s, but not since I had dc, and certainly not now I'm 50. If I drink more than a couple of days in a row I just feel physically and mentally a bit rubbish. We also have reasonably active holidays - sightseeing, walking, swimming in the sea - so it's not like I'd want to lie on a lounger all day and recover.

I'm a teacher too @Thereasonidid , but even in my fairly hard partying days at the beginning of my career I couldn't have managed every day for 6 weeks with day time drinking too! Weekends only for me now during the summer break, bit more when away.

@AllProperTeaIsTheft we are early 50s. A few drinks doesn’t mean we are hungover.

No, me neither. I can still drink a lot in one go without really getting a hangover at all. It's the cumulative effect over consecutive days that makes me feel generally shit, and would make my holiday less enjoyable.

ShorelineDance · 01/09/2023 08:27

I had a coffee at the pub last night

It is not compulsory to drink alcohol

Batalax · 01/09/2023 08:34

I drink everyday on holiday - quite a lot, but I know my limits and don’t drink enough for a hangover. Those days are long gone.

Do people who have a lot of booze on holiday... have very sedentary jobs the rest of the time?

My job is very sedentary. I feel like screaming at the thought of sitting around drinking while on holiday. For me that would be pure hell (an anti-holiday even).

43ontherocksporfavor · 01/09/2023 09:05

I don’t really do lying about holidays. Last one was a city break so only 4 nights. Don’t drink in the day but out for dinner every night and had a drink on the hotel roof bar before going out for food and drinks.

TheKeatingFive · 01/09/2023 09:09

Yup. Just in the evenings though. If i drink in the daytime I generally regret it.

Strugglingtodomybest · 01/09/2023 09:14

Yes, I tend to, unless I'm on holiday by myself when I may not bother to go out some evenings.

Otherwise, it's part of the holiday. Activity during the day, followed by a sundowner in the early evening and wine with our meal.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/09/2023 09:16

Usually yes, but only a glass or two of wine or lager. The odd G&T thrown in if it’s hot.

Allthatwegotisthispalebluedot · 01/09/2023 09:25

I definitely drink every day when i‘m on holiday. It doesn’t count! I don’t get hammered but we might have a beer with lunch if we are mooching and sight seeing, a cocktail on the beach if AI in the middle of the afternoon. If we’ve been on a more active holiday (eg climbing or walking/hiking or safari) then definitely a beer just before dinner and then another with my meal. I go to bed early on holiday though so I never really get a hangover when I’m away as I sleep it off.

My job isn't that sedentary. Lying around all day on holiday would be very boring, but I can happily sit around drinking in the evening after a day doing stuff.

Why do people on Mumsnet have to be so dramatic? You feel like screaming? You wouldn’t… just go on a different kind of holiday without the fuss?

Fizbosshoes · 01/09/2023 10:43

My job would be classed as skilled manual work. It's fairly sedentary though but I am quite active (I walk at least 2 miles a day, about 25 flights of stairs and run/gym 4 times a week) . When I went on holiday I did about 30 min exercise in the morning (apart from one day we did a 5 mile walk) the rest of the time I lazed on the beach or by the pool and read a book. I loved it! I drank most evenings but I don't think I exceeded the recommended units for the week

megletthesecond · 01/09/2023 10:52

No. I don't drink at home but when I used to have holidays I was even healthier. Less stress and no biscuits.

rookiemere · 01/09/2023 10:57

Yes absolutely have a drink with dinner and/or a cocktail before. I'm not a big drinker so I don't worry about it. DH however seems to want a drink or two pre dinner, wine with dinner and then one or two afterwards. I find it quite boring to sit there all the time as can only drink one or two before feeling squiffy.

FrenchandSaunders · 01/09/2023 10:59

Yes, usually. Lovely Greek islands, wine with lunch, little nap/read/podcast on the sunbed by the pool/beach. Cocktails in the evening and wine with dinner.

Not every day is day drinking though as we usually hire a car and explore a bit.

Love a boat trip with wine/food.

Usually start with a drink at the airport/on the plane.

dontforgetme · 01/09/2023 11:08

Yes definitely. I love a beer round the pool! Even in those shitty plastic cups.

aintnothinbutagstring · 01/09/2023 11:17

I don't drink anymore but I think it is usual to drink more on holiday - benefit of no longer drinking is I feel fresh and alert all holiday and don't have to worry about weight gain (from alcohol anyway). Nice when you get that nice floaty feeling from alcohol but it doesn't last long and then you just get that groggy headachy feeling.

No, we both have quite/very active jobs and hobbies (hiking, mountain biking, swimming) day to day and are also active on holiday.

We typically have the first drink of the day at 'beer o clock' 11 am and will then probably go for a walk/visit something like a museum/garden etc, have another beer during a mid afternoon lunch, then go to the beach, swim in the sea, after which we'll have another beer.

Then we'll probably have another one or something like a G&T while getting ready to go out, another drink with dinner and finally one on the terrace as a nightcap.

So while that looks like a lot, we're never drunk or loud and we don't 'sit around', we're always doing things as we also go on diving, hiking or mountain biking holidays too.

Glitterblue · 01/09/2023 11:21

Yes. We went to Italy and had a glass of wine with lunch and dinner most days plus at our favourite restaurant they always gave us a free shot of Meloncello at the end of the meal! I hadn’t even heard of that before we went, I’d only heard of Limoncello but Meloncello is lovely!
