Do you drink every day on holiday?

Wondering about this. Normally I stick to weekends for a few drinks, with the odd mid week couple of glasses of wine at an events or somesuch.

But on holiday we drank every day for a week. A beer or cocktail or two before dinner, and then sharing a bottle of wine for example. Had a weekend of no alcohol after coming home, just to get a break, but we're away this weekend again so will drink this weekend too.

If you drink, do you drink quite a bit more on holiday?

God yes, have a few glasses of a weekend but on holiday all bets are off 😂 kids are all teenagers and we wait until early evening but I'd say I spent this holiday mildly tipsy after 5 every day

I didn’t drink alcohol for about 10 years because I couldn’t face dealing with kids and hangovers!
I do now drink wine regularly at home, about 3 bottles a week !
Am on holiday now and the wine is not as high in alcohol so probably drinking less !

Same! Didn't drink for 10 years because for sure someone would get sick or wake up crying at 2am, now they are teenagers I'm so enjoying a glass (or 10) of vino

AnnaMagnani · 31/08/2023 21:11

Yes but we find going from one bottle a week between 2 to sharing a bottle over a meal every evening a bit challenging

Loved Florence where they had high quality wine in half bottles.

Crowfinch · 31/08/2023 21:15

Yes.
I think we drink less on AI than sc though. Meals last longer in restaurants, so we end up drinking more wine.

Phos · 31/08/2023 21:23

Yep. Wine with lunch and dinner, cocktail in the afternoon and either more cocktails or g&t in evening.

LyricalGangsta · 31/08/2023 21:24

Yes, every evening. Some more than others. And that was camping. 😬🤷‍♀️😊

Itsnotrightbutitsok · 31/08/2023 21:26

With kids - no.
Either nothing at all or just a couple in the evening.

Without kids - most nights.
I used to drink much more but now I choose to spend my calories on food instead.

You need more alcohol than ever when you're camping!

StrawberrySquash · 31/08/2023 21:27

Mostly. I might get fed up after a few nights and have a night off, or I might volunteer to drive one night so someone else can have a drink. But I will drink most nights, although not loads. Christmas is probably a bit heavier as you're in a family home so have the drinks cabinet to raid.

I'm fairly abstemious the rest of the year, so don't worry about it too much.

Linsco · 31/08/2023 21:28

Yip, all day every day! And yet I don't drink much at home at all, I never seem to get very drunk so clearly can pace it quite well abroad! ;-)

TheWelshposter · 31/08/2023 21:29

Yes. I love to try the local wine with dinner and then a cocktail or two after. Nothing crazy but I definitely drink more frequently when on holiday.

Lioney · 31/08/2023 21:29

No - only go on holiday with my dc.

I'm actually quite shocked by how much people on this thread drink when on holiday.

Ragwort · 31/08/2023 21:33

I don't necessarily drink more than usual on holiday ... but I clearly drink a lot more than most mumsnetters on a regular basis ... I nearly always have a couple of glasses of wine with dinner every evening ... and I do the same on holiday.

I won't tell you what I drink on my girls' holidays then. That's a special kind of drinking.

You're shocked? I'd be more shocked if people didn't drink on holiday...

Sure if you've got young kids and need to be running around after toddlers you might not fancy it, but most people will enjoy alcohol with lunch/dinner, around the pool/at the beach or when experiencing the nightlife. It's hardly surprising!

JamSandle · 31/08/2023 21:35

No. Maybe once or twice. If I fancy a drink I have one but drinking daily would leave me very tired and probably feeling quite low and unwell.

PinkRoses1245 · 31/08/2023 21:35

Yes - not drunk but 2-3 over a day / evening. That’s what holidays are for!

Lastchancechica · 31/08/2023 21:37

Yes! Always enjoy the summer months. Will cut back drastically in Sep, and over the autumn before it’s Christmas 🎉

Batalax · 31/08/2023 21:37

Absolutely. That’s part of what makes a holiday very enjoyable.

JaceLancs · 31/08/2023 21:39

Yes but I don’t start as early in the day as I used to!
Drinking at lunchtime just makes me snooze all afternoon
If I’m having a pool and sunbathing day might have a couple of drinks mid afternoon onwards otherwise tend to wait until just before evening meal when we will have a drink on the balcony/patio before heading out

DanceMumTaxi · 31/08/2023 21:43

Yep, but not during the day (playing with dc in the pool etc). Will have wine with dinner then a cocktail or two afterwards. Not drunk at all, but do like a few drinks on holiday. Don’t drink every day home though, just a bit of wine or G&T at weekends.

troppibambini6 · 31/08/2023 21:46

Yep a couple of beers in the sun at about 12, lunch about 2.30 with a couple more beers or maybe a glass of wine.
Cocktail before dinner, maybe a vodka and tonic at the table then share a bottle of wine with dinner.

Everyday on holiday. Came home yesterday and probably won't drink til a fortieth on the 9th then probably nothing else for a few weeks.

GrandTheftWalrus · 31/08/2023 21:46

My dad has already said he's going to phone the hotel next year and warn them we are going as we'll (me,him and dh) drink the bar dry!

teatimenow · 31/08/2023 21:48

At home I drink one day a week at most, on holiday I drink every day. A cocktail or two at brunch and possibly another at dinner. Always a cold beer on the beach or on a boat trip. It’s part of our celebrations, which I see a holiday as, a celebration of life.

spuddel · 31/08/2023 21:53

I usually have one or two sober nights in a seven day trip with my friends or dh. Never drank when dc was young on holiday, would not have coped with the hangover. I start with a Mimosa getting ready for dinner, some wine at dinner then maybe another couple of glasses after. Can't handle booze by the pool though, it would send me to bed at 4pm.
