Clubbing in your 40s

Canisaysomething · 31/08/2023 00:22

Not an AIBU as such. But my DC are finally at an age they can be left with baby sitters and I want to go clubbing. I want a night out in London similar to Shoreditch 2005 - 2010, Shunt lounge London Bridge if that means anything to anyone.

Is clubbing always a disappointment in your 40s or can those nights out in your late 20s be recreated?

I'm 34 and went to a club three weeks ago. A man a similar age to me approached me and said "you look like you might remember Woolworths too!" 😳🤦

I'm here for this!

I'm 34 in a few weeks and this has killed me this morning 🤣🤣

Sorry OP not sure on the clubbing... in Glasgow they now do an Over's night (exclusive for over 30's 🤣) maybe try and hunt for one of them??

Sunseaandsand1 · 01/09/2023 09:44

There’s still so many male 40+ DJs out there & nobody gives it a second thought. Nobody is ever too old to dance & party! Try a Mums that Rave event with the amazing Nikki Beatnik or one of Annie Mac’s Before Midnight parties. Also get yourself to a decent festival or two with some mates next year.

GFBurger · 01/09/2023 10:09

You are not too old. There are a lot of us still clubbing. Properly. Clubbing for the music… not in a random townie nightclub meat market.

Granted… not every week!

If you follow the music it will be fine. Ibiza is definitely a massive mix of ages at the right club. Probs not Pacha!

And if some of the young ones hang on to you like you are their favourite lunch lady at some point, remember that’s part of the adventure too!

rc22 · 01/09/2023 10:24

My DH is a secondary school teacher. The last time we went clubbing we were in our late thirties. As we walked through the club, we were greeted by many of our fellow clubbers with, 'hello sir' 'evening Mr **'
Made me feel very old! 😂

Squiblet · 01/09/2023 10:27

would go see Pete tong do his thing in the royal Albert hall with an orchestra though

Funny you should say that - this week I've been obsessively watching t ... so good! Wish I could have been there!

It's long but if you want the highlights, try 00:49:30 for Insomnia and 1:10:00 for an absolutely storming Cafe del Mar (especially 1:14 where the very serious, poised conductor loses his shit slightly, and Pete Tong throws him a "go on my son" gesture)

My DC....21, 24, 26.....promised me they'd take me clubbing to celebrate, if/when I recovered from a serious illness. I've always LOVED dancing. Got well, went to a fancy Brighton club and danced my 55 year old arse off until 3am! Utterly fantastic!

❤️❤️❤️ I love this!

VelvetUndergrounds · 01/09/2023 14:37

Do you have to go clubbing? I am more of a late night bar type person - that's a good mix of ages and there's usually music and somewhere to dance.

BatsHaveButtcheeks · 01/09/2023 15:26

I'll check out these suggestions too, especially the Annie Mac one

I went to creamfields South this year, next year I'm off to ibiza for my 40th, and when I complete my degree in 18 months, I'm off to Tomorrowland to celebrate

I have been to a few old ravers club nights the talk of the good old days gets a little weary the dancing is less energetic most look worn out by 12 (I’m off home then)

tbh seeing Dan and Lisa nip off to the loos for a line is tragic it’s surprising how many still desperately hang on to these times

I like the odd dance at a bbq or birthday celebration (like my dads 80) but a club night not for me anymore

VestaTilley · 01/09/2023 15:44

Personally I think clubbing was wrecked after the smoking ban - they now stink!! - that and gropey men put me off. I used to love it and went a lot at university, but I’d rather go to the theatre and a good restaurant now or something equally sedate 😂.

I do love dancing and 80s, 90s music, but the venue/group and getting home options would all need to be perfect now to get me out of Mum mode.

theleafandnotthetree · 01/09/2023 15:47

I am very jealous of those of you living in big cities where there is at least the option of going to places to dance, here in the West of Ireland, it's really limited. And then there's having people to go with. I have one or two friends who are up for it a couple of times a year but others who would prefer as one poster put it so brilliantly, to put out a campfire with their face. Dancing is the thing in the world that makes me feel the best, the most alive and I don't get to do it nearly often enough.

I'm 50 and trying to rush my daughter out the door to her dads so I can let my hair down tonight.Grin

Looking forward to Deep into Soul boat party at the end of the month.

I'll stop dancing when I'm dead.

Globules · 01/09/2023 19:36

I'll stop dancing when I'm dead.

Preach it @JerkintheMerkin

AlphaAlpha · 01/09/2023 19:39

@pinkpedi
No to clockwork this time, off to Peach at Camden next week!
Got my trance trousers at the ready 😎

Hotzenplotz · 01/09/2023 19:44

I remember being 17 (back when I was convinced that 35 was middle aged and 50 was ancient). My best friend's parents used to come and join us in nightclubs at weekends, and I thought they were absolutely tragic cases.

You "know it all" when you're 17, though.

At 45 I can't be arsed clubbing, those days are long behind me. If anyone else my age or older still has the energy to do it, why the hell not? Good on 'em.

fiorentina · 01/09/2023 20:38

I’ve been to DJ Fat Tony’s brunches and had fun dancing there. And want to get tickets for Annie Mac Before Midnight to get my clubbing fix. Dancing at festivals in the dance tent also a good way to have a good night!

NancyJoan · 01/09/2023 20:47

I’m older than you, and went out a lot in the mid 90s. No way I’d go to a regular club now, but I have been to a couple of nights where some of the DJs from my era were playing. Was not the same, but was still fun. Once a house music lover, always a a house music lover. Everyone looked a little older/fatter/more tired, and I definitely didn’t dance til dawn like I used to, but was still a good night out.

LubaLuca · 01/09/2023 20:49

I went in a nightclub last week for the first time since I've been in my 40s. I had a fabulous time. The photos are the most horrific series of images I've ever seen - they look like those pictures in 1980s supernatural books that appear to have the ghost of a long dead relative hovering at the back.

Jem123456789 · 01/09/2023 22:34

It’s disappointing in your 30’s, let alone your 40’s. You can’t rediscover youth unfortunately.

Anyone seen The Power of Parker?
Ha! I ❤️ that scene!
Excellent series also@Canisaysomething

Wasn’t it? Sian Gibson is such a brilliant writer.

I've just watched this and had proper goosebumps. I'm not sure whether the nostalgia has made me feel happy or a bit sad actually Confused

But awesome listening/watching, thank you! Pete Tong would still get it too Grin

NorthWestThree · 01/09/2023 22:48

I went to an over 30s club recently - info said strictly over 30s only, photo ID etc. I was gutted when they didn't ask me for ID and merrily let me on in. Over 30! How dare they think I look over 30! (I'm 44 😂)

Great night tho 😀

Needapadlockonmyfridge · 01/09/2023 22:54

I'm a bit older than you.

I last went clubbing in my 30s, and I felt so old!

I think I will leave it as memories ... it is never going to be as good as it was (Wag Club etc).
And I do like to be in bed by midnight, queueing for the night bus at 3am would just finish me off these days :D
