Melmi256 · 26/08/2023 19:43

Invited to a bbq … I’m not really a burger hot dog kinda person at all.
Everyone is bringing something, I only really would eat steak from a bbq , can I bring a steak for myself like a veggie would take a veggie burger ? I can’t afford to take steaks for everyone but will bring something else like sides potsto/pasta ?

@BeeLievable I am taking shared food and drink I’m not turning up with just one steak I never said that ! I just don’t want a sausage or burger as the meat option but also don’t want to take 20 steaks …

I wouldn't do it personally, but I it is interesting that people are allowed to bring their own stuff if they are a vegan or whatever, but it seems totally off if you are just not a fan of processed meat.

Steak is not a processed meat from a butchers

BeeLievable · 27/08/2023 12:56

What's strange is your overriding need to consume some meat at this event where because of your own restrictions it's incredibly socially awkward and rude for you to do so.

Can't you just accept you won't be eating meat at this barbecue and eat some sides instead of you are too worried about the food? Surely that's better than all this rudeness and tightness.

Melmi256 · 27/08/2023 12:57

@Mammyloveswine I think this is what I will do - it’s actually the best suggestion I’m going to buy some sirloins and make up some kebabs with veggies on !

I find rib eye best for flavour, but tbh would choose a cheap cut for bbq as it is unlikely to be cooked optimally. How well do you know the people there? If I was close with the group I'd be more willing to ask them if I can bring steak for me but explain can't afford for everyone (taking a few extras is a nice idea)

@BeeLievable
its strange I want to eat meat at a bbq !? Yea ok …..

This thread is very odd.

honestly op, just eat your rare filet before you go or when you come back and then just take some sharing food and try your best to join in.

Well then I hope you have a fabulous time! Just say to the host please keep a couple back for me as I can't eat processed meats.

@ThanksItHasPockets
well it’s obv a matter of taste and opinion I like fillet as it’s nice and tender and no fat , strip loin is I agree more flavourful but sometimes too fatty.
strip loin is NOT sirloin …. I live in North America ….

You should have mentioned that sooner before telling me and pp that we are wrong. It’s relevant and we are perfectly correct.

US Strip steak = UK Sirloin steak
US ‘Sirloin’ = UK rump steak

MissFancyDay · 27/08/2023 13:05

It's just one meal, do people really stress about one meal?

No I don’t think it’s as simple as that. More that it’s odd that you want to eat meat so much that you’re prepared to endure the social awkwardness and being remembered as “that person”. Even if everyone else is too polite to say anything about it, they will be thinking that it’s incredibly rude, tight and weird.

Make a proper contribution and just go without the things you don’t want to eat.

UnderCarraigeWoes · 27/08/2023 13:16

Just cut chicken through see if cooked and if not ask them to cook it a bit longer????

To be honest most barbecues I've been to have consisted of chicken you could use to resole a shoe so I think you'll be all good.

You're really making a mountain out of a mile hill.

What is strange about or an "overriding need" to be eating meat at a ....... BBQ? Seriously? You sound quite strange making that comment. There will be meat at the BBQ (which is traditionally about barbequing meat), she is just considering what type of meat she'll eat. Not sure why you're making a big deal out of that.

Um, it's a BBQ! Everyone or almost everyone will be eating meat.

What's you're point?

I thought the point was quite easy to get, the point is if you don’t like any of the meat provided you can easily eat the side dishes as irs one meal.

Howdoesitworkagain · 27/08/2023 13:23

@Sueveneers read the posts again. People are not saying it’s weird to eat meat at a BBQ 😂
It’s weird to do something so socially awkward as to take a single steak to a BBQ just so you can eat meat at the BBQ. It would be far simpler and more socially acceptable to just not eat meat for this one occasion. That’s not that hard to understand is it? And it’s not that much of a hardship 😂

Melmi256 · 27/08/2023 13:26

@Sueveneers thank you ! God they made it sound like I’m crazy for wanting to eat meat at a bbq ! Or like I’m Hannibal lector with an insatiable desire for meat 🤣🤣
I’m not, I like a bbq but I’m just not a whole burgers in buns person …. Ive had raw chicken before at a bbq and it’s put me off completely.
It’s a big group so I know I can’t take steaks for everyone ! I’m going to make up some steak kebabs

Melmi256 · 27/08/2023 13:28

Ah, thank you. That makes sense. I was 99% sure I was right but nice to have corroboration 😊

CurlewKate · 27/08/2023 13:38

Personally, if I knew there was going to be only processed meat at a barbecue and I didn't want to eat it, I wouldn't take my own, personal, special, superior meat and ask them to cook it for me. I would take something I would be happy to have cooked for me. And if I was nervous about the cooking, that would probably be something vegetarian. Because that would stop me worrying about how it was cooked. Or I would make some kebabs out of my steak, and hover near the barbecue to make sure I got one! It doesn't actually seem that difficult to me!

liveforsummer · 27/08/2023 13:41

Um, it's a BBQ! Everyone or almost everyone will be eating meat.

They'll be eating meat that's provided though or the meat they've brought to share. Not their own prime cut of steak 😅

Janieforever i think that will look rude turning up and not eating any of the bbq food surely

I doubt anyone would notice unless you choose to eat nothing at all. A plate of sides and a bun with cheese and salad minus the actual burger would be highly unlikely to be noticed let alone thought I'd as rude. The kebab idea, suggested from early on is a good one though

Inertia · 27/08/2023 13:49

Just eat the steak at home before you go to the bbq. Then it’ll be cooked exactly as you like. Taking a steak for yourself is pretty rude.

Take along some sides that you like, and eat sides while you’re there.

A veggie wouldn’t take just a burger for themselves- I’d take a box of veggie burgers, box of veggie sausages, and veg/halloumi kebabs.

@CurlewKate yes I just don’t like processed meat ! It’s not a great variety really being offered

Melmi256 · 27/08/2023 13:51

@Inertia yes but a box of veggie burgers is a different price point to steak ! If I take 10 steaks , a side and bottle of wine it’ll cost a fortune.
