I’m just about to go to a country where tourists often get stomach problems, and the nurse at my local surgery suggested flat coke as a remedy, so it must be some help. Not sure if it would be a good idea for children though. I hope everyone is OK.

Can Coke kill bacteria? No. Viruses? No. Salmonella? No. Is it acidic enough to acid-destroy bugs? No. Do we need sugar and/or sweeteners to calm upset stomach? Hell no. Carbonation and phosphoric acid can actually have a detrimental effect on digestive health, just like sweeteners.

That nurse is a fool. Now that you know it, I'd be very cautious taking ANY health advice from her.

I had a teacher ring in sick who had done the same thing. She had a day off and a bit of an upset tummy.
