I'm a terrible mum. I just picked them up 🤷 as I thought they were the cooked version 🤢. They ate the whole pack before the guy told me. It's going to be a long messy weekend. 😭 They are going to be unwell and it's all my fault

I don't you're a terrible mom because you made a mistake, but you should definitely call the children's doctor and ask him or her about it. Raw chicken can be very dangerous. I would call doctor right away.

Boysnana · 25/08/2023 20:39

Give them good gut stuff like yakult if they will. The good bacteria will help kill any nasty ones. Hopefully they will be ok. X

ConfusingTrousers · 25/08/2023 20:40

You have defended yourself gloriously against several nitwits in this thread, it's actually been very heartening to see someone who's clearly taking her responsibility to her kids very seriously but still isn't taking any crap from people whose own issues make them want to bully you over it. You seem to have very well-judged boundaries and I admire you for it. I have trouble judging that in my own life, so I just wanted to say well done.

Fecksakereallygodreally · 25/08/2023 20:44

Thank those last supportive posts made me tear up a bit. Tried yakult before a no go..but have persuaded them to have some multi bit gummies!

Oh said it made me teer up a bit as some posts have been supportive. Not sure what happened to that one????

OP posts:
Fecksakereallygodreally · 25/08/2023 20:47

Tried yakult with no luck. But multi vit gummies are accepted 😊

Grandmadh · 25/08/2023 20:51

They will be fine. Stop beating yourself up! You are doing fine, and the fact that you are worrying about this tells me this. Please stop worrying xxx

Fecksakereallygodreally · 25/08/2023 20:55

Lol I got the posts about gummies waited on I think they thought there the other kind of " gummies" 😂 I don't drug my kids

The children don't have any symptoms of being ill, and they ate the chicken over a day ago. Don't think a doctor would suggest anything apart from keeping an eye on them.

Also I think OP is in the U.K. where, unless I'm mistaken, you wouldn't just have the children's paediatrician's number in your phone so you can ask them questions

Yes just anecdotally - DH had symptoms within a few hours when he did the same.

Langpants · 25/08/2023 21:26

I’d love some of THOSE gummies right now. Wine will have to do.
I can’t believe people are suggesting ring the doc or go to hospital. Unless they start vomiting, they’ll be fine. I’m pretty sure the “danger” window has been and gone. Rest well OP… at least they’ve eaten. 🤣x

Notooserious · 25/08/2023 21:48

Glad they are ok! Cor some people on here are a bit ott… What’s a doctor going to say other than keep an eye on them? Hardly going to get them in for stomach pumping and antibiotics if they are completely asymptomatic! Get any rest you can, OP, and chalk it up as a win that they haven’t been put off them :-)

LoveBeingAMum555 · 25/08/2023 22:19

I haven't read the whole thread but I did exactly the same when my kids were little and they were fine, no reaction at all!

FindingNeverland28 · 25/08/2023 23:21

They might be okay. I remember being in the Galápagos Islands and we had this tour guide that ate partially cooked chicken (as in the outside was white but the centre was still raw) like he ate it all the time. He looked at us funny when we wouldn’t eat ours. The chicken was fresh though. It had been running round a few hours before.

But it doesn't work! It's a myth that has been debunked and there is zero science and reasoning as to how it could possibly work.

Can Coke kill bacteria? No. Viruses? No. Salmonella? No. Is it acidic enough to acid-destroy bugs? No. Do we need sugar and/or sweeteners to calm upset stomach? Hell no. Carbonation and phosphoric acid can actually have a detrimental effect on digestive health, just like sweeteners.

That nurse is a fool. Now that you know it, I'd be very cautious taking ANY health advice from her.

I'll explain the coke thing.

After diarrhoea/nausea you need to rehydrate.

So drink water.

BUT in some places the water is not reliably clean. Or even if it is, because it is unusual for your system, it might make you feel worse.

Coca cola, worldwide have strict standards on the water used in production.

You will never get sick from the water in Coke.

And you need salts/sugars when rehydrating, so coke serves that function too.

So it is not medicine. But it is reliable rehydration.

FlamingoFloss · 25/08/2023 23:40

I did this exact same thing before. I ate one too and it defo tasted cooked. No one was ill

The phosphoric acid in it actually also functions as a mild anti-emetic, which is why in the US they have 'Emetrol', which is just flat coke syrup but used a medicine.

fungibletoken · 26/08/2023 02:15

Might have already been mentioned but I love that this thread is being recommended under the "Mumsnet Shopping" section 😁 after all this discussion I could certainly be persuaded to pick up a pack and now know to cook them first! 👍🏻

PrincessAnnaOfArundale · 26/08/2023 05:03

If it helps, I did exactly the same thing when my little boy was about 5. I assumed they were the cooked ones we had nibbled on before from Tesco. It was only after he ate half of them and I tried one that I thought it felt a bit too soft and slimy to be quite right. Checked the packet and said it was only partially cooked so needed to be heated in oven for 15 minutes or something like that. I cried and felt guilty but just to reassure you he was fine. No sickness or illness at all. He’s 16 now, 6 foot 3, seemingly no damage was done and he’s perfectly fine so don’t panic too much 😛

Billybea · 26/08/2023 07:22

So, it’s now Saturday morning, I’m assuming all OK? If so I would think they’re past the danger stage! 🙏

Plus if someone thinks it will help there is a psychological aspect.

If I’m feeling travel sick/ sea sick full fat coke and salt and vinegar crisps help, whatever the reason that might be.

Teateaandmoretea · 26/08/2023 07:34

Fingers crossed the kids have got through the night okay. That would properly have stresses me out too OP.

ReformedWaywardTeen · 26/08/2023 09:30

Didn't want to read and run @Fecksakereallygodreally my 16 year old is having assessment for ND and they are ridiculous with food.
I understand how stressful it is and to those posters who force feed their kids perfect food, trust me a ND kid that would backfire. Sometimes it's a win to make sure they actually eat anything. My teen would starve rather than eat some foods.
Glad to hear no harm done OP

Fecksakereallygodreally · 26/08/2023 09:53

Well still no signs of anything happening. Interested about the algorithm on Mumsnet that's quite amusing. 😁. They don't really taste of anything but it has a little protein in so it's quite handy as an emergency food when you are out..

Glad they’re ok.
I once ate undercooked chicken, noticed straight away and spat it out.. but OMG I was running up and down the beach to the toilet every 5 minutes and my bottom hurt for days after!!
