I'm a terrible mum. I just picked them up 🤷 as I thought they were the cooked version 🤢. They ate the whole pack before the guy told me. It's going to be a long messy weekend. 😭 They are going to be unwell and it's all my fault

I'm lucky they have increased their food managed to include some veg and fruit 🙌. But it's hard work and i don't want to force them. It's that association between being sick and the food they have last are. Noro swept through nursery OBS not food. But they associates the food macaroni cheese with what they got unwell with. So they won't touch it now!

I really think your kids will be fine, OP. Please don't worry so much. As pp have said, there's only an issue if there's something wrong with the product. Also, chicken, in particular, really stinks if it's off/something wrong.

I'm laughing at the antics of VeridicalVagabond and her raw chicken drumsticks. Grin

Apart from 1 poster everyone has been kind and has even made me chuckle! 😂

@MadNads

Coke can actually be useful in killing bacteria in the stomach. Don't completely understand the science of it but a friend of mine swears by it.

That's true.

Open water swimmers drink it after swimming in lakes for the reason it kills bacteria!

truthhurts23 · 24/08/2023 18:15

its processed so it shouldnt be too bad? the stomach acid will take care of most of the nasties, people eat raw meat and chicken as a lifestyle choice too
ive seen children eat way worse and survive
our cat caught a mouse the other day and dd took it from him and started playing with it😭im pretty sure she put it on her face

Lucy202 · 24/08/2023 18:19

Ive done it. It was me not the kids but if i wasnt eating their food out of the packet they would have got it lol. I had a long day at work just picked something up that didnt need cooking... or so i thought.
Read the book why mummy drinks
Its a howler of mums getting it wrong. Dont worry. The fact you posted about it just shows your not a bad mum lol.

Blimey, that's good to know!

Legoroses · 24/08/2023 18:20

Hey OP, just want to back you 100% on getting them to eat full stop! It's so much harder to get kids with sensory needs to eat anything sometimes so do not beat yourself up at all. I'm crossing everything they won't be sick - I do know how badly some kids find it. Keep going OP. You're doing a bloody marvellous job.

damsoncheese · 24/08/2023 18:20

At least you've got time to (discreetly!) make sure you know where the sick bowls and towels are! Seems like there's a really good chance they'll be fine though.

I love the pretending to be a lion by eating raw drumsticks!

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 24/08/2023 18:22

We're a veggie house but DSis eats meat, I thought those kids chicken things are cooked and you have to heat them through? So not like eating raw chicken.

grass321 · 24/08/2023 18:23

Someone else did exactly the same thing on MN a couple of months ago and the kids were all fine - if that makes you feel better!

Growlybear83 · 24/08/2023 18:27

My mum ate raw breaded chicken goujons several times when her dementia started to get really bad, and they didn't make her ill. By that time I was trying to buy her food that she could cook easily but she saw the breadcrumbs and thought they were ready to eat.

PixellatedPixie · 24/08/2023 18:28

My elderly dad (78) took very similar ones - also Waitrose and also uncooked - and ate a bunch of them out of my fridge the other day. I was worried he would be ill due to his age but he was absolutely fine!

Hurryupdoris · 24/08/2023 18:30

I am sure your dc's will be fine OP. Try not to worry. You are doing a great job.
My DD bought our dog a bag of dog treats. They were heart shaped in a pretty bag. She said, I have left something on the kitchen side. I thought they were for me so tucked in. They tasted like sand. Awful but I still went back for another one. Still a taking point in my household.

babyproblems · 24/08/2023 18:33

even if they were raw it’s not a definite that they will be ill. People become ill from bacteria eg salmonella; that’s not on all raw chicken until it’s cooked. If they were ‘ready made’ I suspect it’s actually even more unlikely they’ll be harbouring very serious bacteria.

Fecksakereallygodreally · 24/08/2023 17:33

Calming down now! Some kids can cope being sick but mine can't they get absolutely terrified. All these stories make me feel somewhat comforted. But also queasy 🤢 ha ha can't win! Btw if you have a home made breadcrumb.chicken pop recipe feel free to share!

Chicken bits
Coat bits in flour
Coat bits in egg
Coat in breadcrumbs (either home made or you can buy panko crumbs)
Cook in oven or fry

Ah.. yes didn't think of that side of things.

Good luck

queentim · 24/08/2023 18:48

Honest mistakes happen.

Don't feel too bad. This might end up being a funny story when they're older.

ImABox · 24/08/2023 18:49

@Fecksakereallygodreally you sound like a great mum and easily done.
I’d give the coke a shot, even if it meant less sleep tonight on the chance it will help.

If they do start to get Ill, contact 111 or GP and say they e eaten raw chicken at X time and now ill as they might need more reviewing/support/medication

Isitautumnyet23 · 24/08/2023 18:50

Dont beat yourself up - easily done and we take things like these on picnics all the time, so mine would also presume cooked if they had these in front of them and were expecting a picnic today! Hope they stay well and every parent makes mistakes.

Piscesmumma1978 · 24/08/2023 18:51

I'd said that's an easy mistake to make. They look like the picnic ready to eat ones.

My friend once 'cooked' chicken nuggets when drunk. She realised in the morning that she hadn't turned the oven on. She was fine!

PrrrplePineapple · 24/08/2023 18:51

I've done that before - assumed breaded chicken was cooked then discovered it was meant to be cooked before eating, but I had already scarfed the lot. No ill effects whatsoeve. It's not fully raw, I think it's cooked but maybe partially?

JonjoMonjo21 · 24/08/2023 18:52

My teenage son once cooked chicken burgers in my toaster… frozen ones… when I was at work. He never even puked. I was amazed. Fingers crossed they will be fine
