I'm a terrible mum. I just picked them up 🤷 as I thought they were the cooked version 🤢. They ate the whole pack before the guy told me. It's going to be a long messy weekend. 😭 They are going to be unwell and it's all my fault

My partner once managed to eat raw chicken. I called a nurse friend who said he was unlikely to be ill and he wasnt. She did say that chicken raised in the UK has an exceptionally low rate of salmonella so if it was British chicken they should be fine.

Theborder · 24/08/2023 19:05

I know an adult who did exactly the same thing and I am sorry to say he wasn’t very well. He had severe 💩. It’s not your fault, it’s bloody confusing really as these things look exactly the same as the ones that are ready to eat. Hopefully they’ll be okay. I think you would know about it pretty quickly so every hour that goes by is a relief I guess. 🤞.

DragonFly98 · 24/08/2023 19:07

I can see why it's confusing you can buy them with the sausage rolls and scotch eggs etc but cooked.

DeerWatch · 24/08/2023 19:08

Many years ago I had a Mcdonald's chicken burger as did DS and as soon as I bit into it tasted raw. DS had eaten half of his, we were both fine.

Ilovenicnacs · 24/08/2023 19:10

My flatmate was obsessed with something similar, just a different brand. She was eating them for weeks until it was pointed out to her they were raw. She had no bad belly or anything so fingers crossed for you!

Ok, warning - the below talks of sickness and diarrhoea.

OP - just in case, this is what happened to us when my Ds1 got salmonella when he was 3 (bloody AI holiday).

First signs = temperature. He soon had a temperature of over 40 which lasted 9 days

2nd sign = diarrhoea began. He was sick once (very unusual as he is sick really easily usually).

When temperature and diarrhoea didn't improve we took his (green) poo to the lab to be tested. Important: the analysis takes days for salmonella. We gave it on the Tuesday and got results on the Friday.

The only thing that concerned the Dr (who saw him 3 times in 5 days) was dehydration. Once he'd lost 10% of his weight we were sent to hospital for a drip to rehydrate him.

I really don't mean to panic you. As PP says the chances are really slight that they get sick. However if they do it's important to tell a Dr about the (possibly) raw chicken and get their poo sent for analysis (as it takes days to grow the culture).

DS recovered absolutely fine and loves talking about when he had "green poo" 🙄

Chicken will only give you food poisoning if it contains salmonella or other bacteria hopefully you will be lucky!

InvincibleInvisibility · 24/08/2023 19:13

Oh and he caught it abroad not in the UK. He wasn't even eating chicken or eggs!

Allthecatseverywhereallatonce · 24/08/2023 19:13

Pretty sure they are cooked already but should be heated. So not technically raw chicken. Just keep an eye on them.

Cathpot · 24/08/2023 19:15

I did the same, grabbing a snack from M and S when kids were about 8 and 10, and v hungry for car journey. They eventually twigged due to chewiness… which was grim. Anyway one was completely fine and one had a stomach upset for a couple of days. They may well get away with it - I was cross as the chicken bits were in the end fridges with lots of cooked snacks and the ‘cook in oven’ instruction was there on the front but really small easy to miss writing .

Philandbill · 24/08/2023 19:15

Poor you, horrible to even be in the waiting and not knowing zone. Hope you are all ok.

Secnarf · 24/08/2023 19:16

If it makes you feel any better, my mum once sent us to school with raw sausage sandwiches.

I opened my lunchbox and realised straight away.I went to find my little sister to find her happily chomping through the second half of her sandwich.

She was none the worse for it.

My mum does not remember. She denies this and claims it didn’t happen as she would never have sent us to school with sausages. We both remember it very clearly.

Louloubelles · 24/08/2023 19:17

I did exactly the same thing with the same popcorn chicken type things from a supermarket. I assumed they were cooked but they weren’t. My very young child was fine! No problem at all but I felt pretty worried for a while.

Did you take it back to the counter? What did they say?

Boo1321 · 24/08/2023 19:20

Yummy. Reduced raw chicken 😂😩😵…

for gods sake “it's hard work and i don't want to force them” some people just have no clue 🫣🥴

Zanatdy · 24/08/2023 19:23

Oh gosh look easily done, don’t beat yourself up. I used to eat raw bacon from the fridge when I was a kid and my mum hadn’t been shopping! I survived

Yes I informed staff who got manager over. He said it was because they had turned friers up too high and hence were not cooked for long enough.
He phoned me next morning to ask how we were.
It was 20 years ago. I should have reported it.

Mugginscake · 24/08/2023 19:28

My DH ate a whole packet of raw chicken skewers in satay sauce (and I mean raw slices of chicken not just reconstituted ball shaped chicken) and had no ill effects at all other than me telling him what a numb nuts he was

ClaireEclair · 24/08/2023 19:32

My old housemate used to eat all sorts and never got sick. Once ate a birthday cake that was a month out of date and was fine. We had bought it from Tesco and kept in a cupboard and forgot about it. He also ate chicken that was a week out of date,
used to scrape mould off of condiments in the fridge and eat them. We were students and our house was not exactly a clean haven. None of us ever got sick.

Againstmachine · 24/08/2023 19:35

Who was the guy who told you they weren't.

Your kids will probably be fine uncooked chicken doesn't automatically give you the shits.

Daftasabroom · 24/08/2023 19:39

Hi @Fecksakereallygodreally I've had full blown gastroenteritis from chicken, it you made for four to six hours without issue you will probably be in the clear.

I think chicken can be reheated and reconstituted something like seven times (it was a while ago I saw that documentary) in which there's not a lot that will survive that.

NotThisWeekSatan · 24/08/2023 19:41

My daughter did exactly this on Christmas Eve a couple of years ago, made for quite a stressful Christmas for us but she was absolutely fine with no ill effects. Fingers crossed the same for you.

I agree that it can be very confusing as so much of the ready to eat and ‘needs cooking’ stuff looks the same.
