Dogs in Greggs

Globules · 23/08/2023 08:29

I'm in Greggs getting my free O2 coffee. There's a dog next to the counter.

Surely dogs in open food places shouldn't be allowed?

YABU - of course all dogs can go in these places
YANBU - dogs have no place there

(Awaits the Greggs comments...🤣)

They're not allowed, there are stickers on the window saying so

sorrynotathome · 23/08/2023 08:31

Assistance dogs only in shops, IMO. John Lewis has got it very wrong - why would any dog want/need to go to a department store. Dogs are not humans.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 23/08/2023 08:32

No, they shouldn't be allowed in there. But I guess they'll argue it's the same as cafes. Not sure it is, as they can get near the fridges etc.

But then I don't think dogs should be in shops either. If I notice a clothes shop allows dogs I'll only buy items that are hung high up. Although of course I can't be sure they've not been hung up lower down for weeks before I went in there!

BrendaMcPherson · 23/08/2023 08:33

Aren't the counters at Greggs covered? It wouldn't bother me but I can see why some people wouldn't like it.

It's not just John Lewis, it's a wide range of shops like White Stuff, Crew Clothing etc. Not sure about Seasalt as I've never seen a dog in any of their shops.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 23/08/2023 08:34

You're not in there for very long anyway so surely you can leave them outside for a couple of minutes while you get your coffee and bacon buttie or whatever. Although I suppose some of them have cafe areas.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 23/08/2023 08:35

Doesn't bother me but I dont like dogs on surfaces in cafes Floor only please not chairs sofas etc.

SpringSparrow · 23/08/2023 08:37

I was in Winchester on Saturday afternoon and saw dogs in lots of shops there including Anthropology, White Stuff and Oliver Bonas. It was really crowded

ShanghaiDiva · 23/08/2023 08:37

Dogs (with the exception of assistance dogs) have no place in any cafe or shop imo. Fail to understand why anyone takes their dog ‘shopping’.

ExtraOnions · 23/08/2023 08:39

People take their “fur babies” everywhere now, and think we should all be delighted to see them.

…and don’t get me started on “support animals” in shops & restaurants.

SpringSparrow · 23/08/2023 08:39

Twice in the last month, I’ve gone into Cafe Nero and there’s been a different dog on the leather sofa. I don’t think they should be allowed on the couches.

yogasaurus · 23/08/2023 08:40

Yanbu. I’m a dog owner but don’t like the new fashion of dogs everywhere either

Optionyougot · 23/08/2023 08:42

Greggs don't allow dogs apart from guide/assistance dogs. Are you saying someone brought in their pet despite the rules, or it could have been a guide/assistance dog and you don't think any dog should be in places like Greggs?

IDidntbuyThefridge · 23/08/2023 08:42

I think this recent ‘dog friendly’ trend is actually really cruel to dogs. It’s shifts the focus away from their needs and suddenly they are fitting in with the owners schedules and needs rather than outings being outdoors or having dog care arranged etc or being trained to have some crate time of owners pop out to shops. It’s selfish and lazy

SomewhereWithSomeone · 23/08/2023 08:42

It depends what their policy says. If they’re allowed, then tough. If not, the staff should have told them to take the dog out.

Most shops here let dogs including food places, which I’m happy about.

Perfectlystill · 23/08/2023 08:43

YABU. You're not eating your Greggs off the floor.

Namechange62846 · 23/08/2023 08:43

I used to love and own dogs, but since COVID I've really come to dislike them. I particularly dislike any kind of "poo" or "doodle" type dog, shittzus and bichon frises. I have also formed a extremely strong dislike of the thing attached via a flimsy retractable bit of string at the other end too. They have no place in shops or places that serve food

Globules · 23/08/2023 08:44

Definitely not an assistance/support dog.

The staff were late teens/early 20s, so I suspect they wouldn't have the confidence to challenge the dog owner. I wouldn't have at that age.

I haven’t seen an anti dog thread in a couple of weeks, which this will inevitable turn into. 😬

asterdaisy · 23/08/2023 08:45

I don't care. And no you can't leave dogs outside. Do you know how many dogs are being stolen these days.

Optionyougot · 23/08/2023 08:45

If it was a pet then yanbu. It's sheer entitlement imo in cases like that

Bigdoglittledog2 · 23/08/2023 08:46

I wouldn’t care as you are in there for a while 2 mins if that most of the time.

Id also never leave my dog outside a shop either though. Stupid idea.

Username1107 · 23/08/2023 08:49

I think it's great that I can take my dog into many cafes. It's not harming anyone else. Greggs isn't one of those places though. No dogs allowed. At least they're not where I am.

asterdaisy · 23/08/2023 08:49

I do not get my dogs to fit around my lifestyle. But it is irritating when you have been a long walk with the dogs and on the way home you want to nip into a shop and cant as you have the dogs with you.

SomewhereWithSomeone · 23/08/2023 08:49

I wouldn’t care as you are in there for a while 2 mins if that most of the time.

Well yes, and OP is only there for a free coffee anyway. I don’t think a coffee will have any dog hair in.
