Dogs in Greggs

Globules · 23/08/2023 08:29

I'm in Greggs getting my free O2 coffee. There's a dog next to the counter.

Surely dogs in open food places shouldn't be allowed?

YABU - of course all dogs can go in these places
YANBU - dogs have no place there

(Awaits the Greggs comments...🤣)

A random child has never wandered over when I’m eating at a restaurants or a picnic and eaten my food. Unlike dogs

Mumsnetters do seem to have this happen to them an unfortunate amount of times. 🤣

Indeed.

I've caught chickenpox, various bugs, colds, sore throats and Covid from people.

In my 50-odd years on this planet I've caught nothing from dogs.

I know who I prefer to see in shops and cafes

This is always such a silly response, sorry.

It's akin to saying 'very few dogs kill humans, it's humans that are the killers'.

Yeah we know. But humans generally aren't potentially pissing or shitting on the floor of well.. any shop, cafe or restaurant. Or wiping their arse on the floor. Or shedding literal handfuls of hair/fur just sitting somewhere for a bit. Particularly as members of the public don't tend to stroke other humans but will stroke a cute dog.

And I love dogs but completely understand and acknowledge why it's not a great idea to have them in food service areas.

Which has nothing at all to do with human-based illnesses 🙄

Food hygiene legislation says no animals should be where food is prepared for very good evidence-based reasons, not because they're being mean.

TyrannosaurusSex · 23/08/2023 10:12

My friend owns a cafe and in the winter months its the dog owners who keep her afloat. Not many people are venturing out in the cold and wet (shit parking around here) but dog walkers have to take the pups out and they often pop in for something on the way home.

This - the pooch pound is mighty. Dog owners have to be out in all weather anyway, so are a bit more regular than fair weather customers.

That said, I don't take mine into anywhere because he's a miserable bugger. If he were a bit more optimistic about life, I may well do so.

43ontherocksporfavor · 23/08/2023 10:13

I’m a dog owner but wouldn’t take her into a shop. She’s very well behaved under a table in a pub but that doesn’t involve being at a counter. Unfortunately the days of leaving dogs outside shops has gone due to dog thefts.

Assistance dogs only in shops, IMO. John Lewis has got it very wrong - why would any dog want/need to go to a department store. Dogs are not humans.

There are always dogs in my local JL. Once was in there and someone had taken their dog on the escalator and it cut its foot. I felt so sorry for the poor thing - it looked terrified. I do think some owners should take some sort of test before being allowed to own a dog.

43ontherocksporfavor · 23/08/2023 10:15

If they want the dog £ then they should take orders outside.

Seagullchippy · 23/08/2023 10:15

Much as I love (some) dogs and I remember how hard it was when I had one, being unable to get any shopping...my child has a terrible phobia of dogs and we now find it hard going almost anywhere. On holiday at the seaside all the shops and cafes had dogs in them, so my child was shaking and in tears. The thought of department stores like John Lewis allowing dogs is absurd — I get that occasionally someone might need to pop into a convenience store on their way home with their dog and that it isn't always possible to leave them outside, but a department store visit is surely a planned event and dogs csn be left at home or with a dogsitter so that people like myself can take their children for shoe fittings/school uniform/etc.!

PaganOfTheGoodTimes · 23/08/2023 10:15

I'm with you OP, I hate dogs in food places. Our village library has a cafe in the building and when we were last there for baby bounce people had two dogs in there, one in the cafe and one wandering around the library. One of my dc has a fear of dogs after being chased and jumped at and now is reluctant to go back to the library which I find appalling, she can't access books because some dogs owners just can't leave their pets at home.

Dog owner and I agree on the JL point. I don't want poss dog wee on the floor/ dog fluff on clothes in a department store.

43ontherocksporfavor · 23/08/2023 10:17

Dog owner. Can’t believe JL allows dogs!

EsmeSusanOgg · 23/08/2023 10:17

Don't mind there bring dog friendly pubs/ cafes. But also think only assistance dogs for proper restaurants.

Why? Because you don't like it? It's their business, they can do what they like 😂

WeetabixTowels · 23/08/2023 10:17

JimJonesLivesInMyHead · 23/08/2023 10:09

That's not my point. Im not talking about intent. You are far more likely to catch something from filthy humans snotting, sneezing and coughing with no sense of basic hygiene than you are from a dog.

That's science

Yes and it’s not at all a bad thing to catch colds now and again. Quite the opposite.

I hope your daughter grows out of her phobia eventually, life is going to be very hard for her if she doesn’t.

nationallampoons · 23/08/2023 10:18

I hate animals in food places, assistance dogs excluding this obvious

WeetabixTowels · 23/08/2023 10:20

I live in a touristy town that has become crazy dog friendly the last few years. It was something of a domino effect that a few places opened their doors to dogs and then everyone followed to ensure they got the business.

Then a young people were in Sainsburys local the other day, he was carrying a chihuahua in his hands. He got told he can’t bring dogs in the shop and honestly you’d think they’d called him a cunt by the way he reacted. “But I’m holding her in my hands” 🙄 moron

WeetabixTowels · 23/08/2023 10:20

*couple not people

WeetabixTowels · 23/08/2023 10:21

As for phobias, judging by the way some dogs are allowed to behave these days I think fearing dogs is a very rational phobia

Toddlerteaplease · 23/08/2023 10:22

I am not keen at all on dogs being allowed everywhere. Especially in coffee shops. I'm wary of big dogs and really don't like chihuahua's.

Toddlerteaplease · 23/08/2023 10:24

SpringSparrow · 23/08/2023 08:39

Twice in the last month, I’ve gone into Cafe Nero and there’s been a different dog on the leather sofa. I don’t think they should be allowed on the couches.

There is an enormous one that goes tinny local branch. He's not on the furniture but is on the floor and there just is no space for him.

😮

What a snotty comment. Where I live Greggs donate huge amounts of their products to the local foodbank without trying to get publicity for it. Heartfelt thanks to whoever organises this for the company

As far as I know, there's no law that doesn't allow dogs in places that sell food. It's up to the business to decide. I don't know what's standard for Greggs, but all their food is wrapped or behind a glass counter anyway.

I hope your daughter grows out of her phobia eventually, life is going to be very hard for her if she doesn’t.

And that's the attitude that so many think is extreme and grossly inappropriate.

The small minority of dog-owners who think dogs rights are just important or sometimes even more, than humans.

And a sneery, nasty dismissiveness of very real issues that dogs may present. It really doesn't come across well.

We're not talking about dogs existing or being present in outdoor spaces, but in spaces like cafes and shops where it is not an unreasonable expectation that dogs won't be there.
