Dogs in Greggs

Globules · 23/08/2023 08:29

I'm in Greggs getting my free O2 coffee. There's a dog next to the counter.

Surely dogs in open food places shouldn't be allowed?

YABU - of course all dogs can go in these places
YANBU - dogs have no place there

(Awaits the Greggs comments...🤣)

It's not just John Lewis, it's a wide range of shops like White Stuff, Crew Clothing etc. Not sure about Seasalt as I've never seen a dog in any of their shops.

All shops attracting a certain customer though

Totally off thread but you've just reminded me, my SIM provider is being taken over by. 02 and I cannot wait for my free coffees Grin

Ooh I’m O2 too. On the free coffees! Brew

BarborousBarbra · 23/08/2023 09:17

My friend owns a cafe and in the winter months its the dog owners who keep her afloat. Not many people are venturing out in the cold and wet (shit parking around here) but dog walkers have to take the pups out and they often pop in for something on the way home.

ShanghaiDiva · 23/08/2023 08:37

Dogs (with the exception of assistance dogs) have no place in any cafe or shop imo. Fail to understand why anyone takes their dog ‘shopping’.

I agree. Beer garden or outside yes, inside no.

I do wonder what if there’s an incident in JL either between 2 dogs or a dog turns on someone? I’ve been in situations where a usually placid dog has turned and growled, barked, bit someone, sometimes with little provocation.

ActDottie · 23/08/2023 09:19

Lots of cafes found here all dog friendly :) and lots of dogs in them and it’s lovely

KimberleyClark · 23/08/2023 09:21

enchantedsquirrelwood · 23/08/2023 08:34

You're not in there for very long anyway so surely you can leave them outside for a couple of minutes while you get your coffee and bacon buttie or whatever. Although I suppose some of them have cafe areas.

I used to be happy to do this but not any more. There are too many dog thefts.

You’d be amazed at how many dogs in my area (south east London) are welcomed into pubs and inside too. They’re the naice pubs though not the spit and sawdust type.

There are so many dogs in my area in parks etc which is lovely, I sometimes dream about quitting my EA (no not estate agent!) job and starting a dog walking business.

SomewhereWithSomeone · 23/08/2023 09:22

@EhrlicheFrau Do try to read what I typed. I said it will TURN INTO an anti dog thread. All the ones I’ve seen that started about cafes/shops, eventually had comments like ‘all dogs should be euthanised’ or ‘thrown off cliffs’ and ‘anyone that has a dog is thick, like their dogs’. All quotes from threads in the last year or so.

Ellie1015 · 23/08/2023 09:26

I am not a dog person really I like them but never owned one. I can understand dogs in a country pub as part of a walk. I can't understand the dogs I see in big shopping centres. I am not sure that would be of any interest to the dog.

I don't think dogs should be in Greggs, but it wouldn't bother me too much.

Taketurn · 23/08/2023 09:27

Really strange to be honest. All the Greggs round ours have stickers saying no dogs allowed.

This news has totally made my day!

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 23/08/2023 09:28

Ahhh OP now you've ruined it! Although I was told we get the rewards so fingers crossed Grin

SpanielsMatter · 23/08/2023 09:31

I adore dogs but no it is not appropriate to have dogs in food premises. Dogs outside sitting in a cafe environment? Yup fine, beer garden again ok as long as the owner is behaving appropriately with the dog.

This mania for taking your dog with you everywhere is bonkers and I say that as someone who has an elderly Boxer who does not like being left alone and we schedule a friend to keep her company.

Some people just refuse to hear the word ‘No.’, believe rules don’t apply to them their children or their pets.

Valerie23 · 23/08/2023 09:32

Well behaved dogs should be allowed everywhere.

I much prefer a dog sitting or laying down quietly by or under a table than someone's screaming brat, with a face full of snot running around out of control.

What is it today with mothers/parents allowing their children to shriek and scream in public?

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 23/08/2023 09:32

I don't think dogs are allowed in greggs? Not the ones near me anyway.

I have taken my dog into dog friendly shops occasionally but he's small and immaculately well behaved. Normally shop assistants are falling over themselves to say hello to him.

pizzaHeart · 23/08/2023 09:34

@sorrynotathome
Are dogs allowed in John Lewis?
I haven’t been there for a while as we don’t have a local one.

I would suggest you also do what you are suggesting I do.
Have a pleasant day.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 23/08/2023 09:36

Can't think of anything worse than taking my dogs shopping with me.

Why would anyone want to do that. Dogs be much happier at home asleep 💤

OneTwoThreeShake · 23/08/2023 09:37

I've never been bothered by a dog in a pub or restaurant. Most people who take their dogs to such places have well trained dogs, and are conscientious owners. It isn't always appropriate to leave the dogs at home, and ultimately if you prefer a dog-free establishment, there are more to choose from.

I don't like dogs in shops because it is generally not something interesting for the dog. I make an exception for pet stores and places like services, because if you're travelling you can't just leave your dog in the car.

As for Greggs, I have no idea of their policy but I couldn't get excited either way.

And don't leave dogs tied up outside a shop unless you'd do the same with your toddler as that's more a realistic equivalent than a car, which you lock, or a bike, which you lock up and both are non sentient objects.

OneTwoThreeShake · 23/08/2023 09:39

Oh, it's a bit of a weird assumption to make that someone who takes their dog in a shop or pub doesn't also take them on decent walks. It isn't an either/or situation.

JellyfishandShells · 23/08/2023 09:41

The nearest Greggs to me is quite small( no seats ) with all the food behind glass (Perspex ? ) protection and everything put into paper bags by the staff behind that. The fridge doesn’t have any uncovered food. I like dogs, though don’t have one, but don’t approve people not keeping their dogs under control in cafes or letting them sit on seats etc, but I am failing to see what the harm is with a dog being on a lead there for a couple of minutes while the owner is being served in the Greggs set up I described.

I live in a London suburb and can’t remember when I last saw a dog tied up outside a shop - too much dog thievery. Most cafes here are very dog friendly - dog bowls and bone shaped treats etc. There’s a big park near so people go there after a walk - the cafes know their market.

I do wonder if there was a line on the Council Tax bill that I overlooked requiring all residents to have a toffee coloured labradoodle because it certainly looks that way sometimes……..

pizzaHeart · 23/08/2023 09:41

Globules · 23/08/2023 09:10

There are many car and bike thefts. I don't take them in shops when it's not allowed.

I can't remember the last time I left her outside a shop tbh, because I don't take my dog shopping.

I absolutely love your bike and car analogy OP.

KimberleyClark · 23/08/2023 09:45

I wouldn’t in all honesty want to take my dog shopping in the city centre. But there are local shopping streets complete with dog friendly coffee shops we go to. Dogs are social animals and they do enjoy being involved in whatever their owner is doing.

FrownBrown · 23/08/2023 09:45

IDidntbuyThefridge · 23/08/2023 08:42

I think this recent ‘dog friendly’ trend is actually really cruel to dogs. It’s shifts the focus away from their needs and suddenly they are fitting in with the owners schedules and needs rather than outings being outdoors or having dog care arranged etc or being trained to have some crate time of owners pop out to shops. It’s selfish and lazy

I agree with this and think some dog-owners need to give some thought about not whether they can, but whether they should.

Because is it practical? And is it good for the dog?

And I love dogs but there have been several occasions where I've thought 'why the flip have you brought your dog?'.

One was a Xmas market last year. Outside so not technically inappropriate for dogs to be there but when there were some areas with huge amounts of people trying to squeeze through, I was able to establish how many humans were there as I could see bodies. I couldn't see the ankle-height, knee height or hip-height dogs on leads which I could trip over or step on their feet or legs or not know they were there till they were pushing into my body.

So dogs were potentially being tripped over and stepped on but also in a really confusing and stressful environment for them where they were in a mass of legs and not able to see outside of that and see where they were or where they were going.
