Dogs in Greggs

Globules · 23/08/2023 08:29

I'm in Greggs getting my free O2 coffee. There's a dog next to the counter.

Surely dogs in open food places shouldn't be allowed?

YABU - of course all dogs can go in these places
YANBU - dogs have no place there

(Awaits the Greggs comments...🤣)

Went to pets at home and someone’s dog shat in the isle. A worker there had to clean it up. I have a dog but there’s no denying they have no place in greggs, they don’t have the same hygiene

I once went to ASDA in Bedminster and a kid crouched down and shat in the middle of the aisle with her parents watching. Humanity is on a strange track at the moment. Still wouldn't suggest to ban kids from ASDA.

dogs want to kill innately. Most humans don’t

Come on what complete rubbish is that. Millions of street dogs with no owner or training live peacefully amongst humans in a lot of countries. They want food and their peace and quiet.

But a doctors surgery or a&e now have added dogs. They are everywhere. People are unable to judge where is acceptable to take a dog. I saw a woman yesterday trying to get one in to a soft play area.

and if greggs and pubs places are optional, it’s perfectly reasonable to expect the person causing the issue, ie the dog person, not to come. Not to expect the world to bend to their will just because it’s not against the law (yet). Wait for a big bite incident and things will change. This is why smoking is now banned inside, it negatively affects the majority.

And if Greggs and pubs are optional establishments, they are well within their rights to allow or disallow whoever and whatever they want inside, from guinea pigs to Dalmatians. If you don't like their rules, you should vote with your feet and not go there. If you see a misbehaved dog somewhere, you should tell the owner they need to keep them under control, and not complain about it later on Mumsnet. If you have hygiene issues, then be assured that a dog walking past packaged food is not going to magically contaminate it with poisonous bacteria. I have more hygiene issues with the man at Wilko's on Clifton triangle who stuck his hand into every single pick a mix box than with a dog walking past it.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 27/08/2023 12:39

Also, service dogs are allowed everywhere, so you can't guarantee a dog free environment anyway
This has been pointed out so many times in such threads, but of course, those who go on about allergies every time never bother to respond to that comment because there are no arguments against it! They just wait for the next dog thread to spur that same pointless comment

And has also been pointed out but conveniently ignored by this poster, genuine service dogs are very rare, unlike pets. I can't even remember the last time I saw a guide dog out, though I've seen a hearing dog on a train a couple of times - but that was pre-covid.

You are missing the point that a dog is an optional accessory. It is not required to purchase a greggs. It’s not in the best interests of the dog, the staff, the other people in the shop. 70% of people on this thread agree. The dog, if it could vote, would probably choose a long walk and a cuddle and a nap, over a trip down the retail centre where it has to navigate all sorts of shit not in its capacity to navigate. It’ll probably get told off along the way, or stepped on, or have to fight the urge to eat something.

why do that when you can leave it at home (if you’ve bothered to train it) and not piss off 7/10 people. People take their dogs because THEY want to. It’s selfish.

Service dogs are trained professional working dogs. Unlike princess pug who hates everyone as the only socialisation they get is sitting in mums rucksack or looking through the glass at steak bakes.

Come on, it's a Greggs, it's not Oxford Circus. They probably took the dog on a walk then popped in to get a sausage roll or whatever. People have limited time and they can either pop to the shop while walking the dog or they bring the dog home and take the car afterwards to go again. Certainly better to be able to combine the trip. As you are not able to leave dogs outside anymore because they get stolen, there's little choice.
And it doesn't matter whatever you write on Mumsnet, as long as the owners allow it, there's nothing you can do about it 😬.

asterdaisy · 27/08/2023 16:47

My dog would vote for greggs every time over a walk or a cuddle.

asterdaisy · 27/08/2023 16:49

Although my local greggs is on a suburban high street next to a large park.
Dogs are not an accessory, they are living breathing animals.

Which you have chosen to have. Why inflict your choice om others?

And no dogs aren't allowed in childrens' playgrounds but entitled dog owners don't care and take them in anyway.

Round here, people especially seem to think these rules don’t apply to cava/cocker/malti poo’s, for some reason

I had to ask a woman to remove her dog from the bottom of a slide in a children's Playpark so that my very dog phobic son could come down the slide. She looked at me like I was a massive pita. I love dogs but I'm utterly sick of there being pretty much nowhere I can take my son and just be able to relax as there won't be dogs.

asterdaisy · 27/08/2023 17:03

@GirlsWithGuitars sorry I inflict my choices by walking along the pavement and in the park with my dog.

People inflict there horrible kids on others all the time. Can’t do anything about it.

My dog wants a campaign for greggs in dogs. Particularly steak bakes.

Gcsunnyside23 · 27/08/2023 17:32

I absolutely can't stand the whole 'bring your dogs everywhere ' notion especially where there is food. I've terrible allergies and end up having to leave

Hanz01743 · 27/08/2023 17:41

If the dog is well behaved I don't see what the problem is.

Of course you will think your children are nice but others may not agree.

same as dogs.

Boomboom22 · 27/08/2023 17:48

@vivainsomnia that is disgusting. I don't care if you wipe it after, I don't believe a baby wipe or even dettol wipe is enough to get your dogs arse and hair off a train table people let their kids put their drinks and crisp packets on. How entitled can you be to think that's ok? It should be on the floor never the seat or table. Your own lap at a pinch. That is really rank.

asterdaisy · 27/08/2023 18:00

Seriously chill. People change babies nappies on tables, spill beer, and all sorts. They are usually filthy. Just clean them before use.

I used to love and own dogs, but since COVID I've really come to dislike them. I particularly dislike any kind of "poo" or "doodle" type dog, shittzus and bichon frises. I have also formed a extremely strong dislike of the thing attached via a flimsy retractable bit of string at the other end too. They have no place in shops or places that serve food

I feel exactly the same!!

DiaNaranja · 27/08/2023 18:15

Except for my own which are perfectly capable (and happier!) to be left alone and not dragged around John Lewis!

DiaNaranja · 27/08/2023 18:17

Bigdoglittledog2 · 27/08/2023 17:41

Children are HUMAN BEINGS! Yes smaller, and quite frankly more annoying, but people can't (and shouldn't!) leave their children at home alone. Dogs can and SHOULD be left at home not be dragged around restaurants and shops. If you can't see the difference between a small human and a dog then you are the problem.

MmeSimone · 27/08/2023 19:20

What I find really amazing is that this thread is split 60/40 with the majority absolutely hating dogs here. Conversely, when I take my dog somewhere like a pub or a shop or a park then 95% of people we meet start cooing over him and want to say hello and pet him. The 5% we move away from. So it's really interesting how this is a dog haters-assemble forum 😁
