Dogs in Greggs

Globules · 23/08/2023 08:29

I'm in Greggs getting my free O2 coffee. There's a dog next to the counter.

Surely dogs in open food places shouldn't be allowed?

YABU - of course all dogs can go in these places
YANBU - dogs have no place there

(Awaits the Greggs comments...🤣)

I have two dogs who never go to shops or cafes simply because they have a strict routine where they walk in woods and come home. Some people do need to take their dogs out on the way home etc and I love seeing them in cafes etc.
if they are well behaved it’s not a problem for me. I did not like seeing dogs tied up outside. Too much dog theft

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 23/08/2023 09:50

My dog loves a trip to the shops - he knows all the ones that have biscuits behind the counter and practically drags me in the door Grin I don't take him specifically, but we often pop in after a dog walk/on the way home.

He also loves a meal out in a dog-friendly cafe or restaurant - especially one of our local pubs where the chef once made him his own dog-friendly roast dinner!

I live in the Lake District though and I'd say a good 80% of shops allow dogs here - the ones that don't are definitely in the minority.

Mochudubh · 23/08/2023 09:50

I think dog friendly pubs etc are fine. I quite like a pub with an old lab snoring by the fire. I don't think they should be in places like Greggs though (assistance dogs excepted). Most Greggs are pretty small and tightly packed so any dog is going to get in the way, cause a trip hazard etc.

As for White Stuff! That's mad, the clue is in the name. I have enough trouble with hair off my own dog, never mind buying expensive clothes pre-haired.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 23/08/2023 09:54

It's no worse than little kids who constantly pick up food and put it back. Unless the dog is licking the food, not a problem.

JustFrustrated · 23/08/2023 09:55

Another one that doesn't understand this desire to take dogs everywhere.

I don't mind dogs generally. But I'm very wary of them after being bitten as a child.

My daughter for years was terrified of all dogs, would literally run up my body to get away from them, as her face was right at the average dogs mouth height so all she saw was teeth. Drove me wild when we'd go out for lunch and there were dogs on the premises.

I like it when somewhere advertised outside if they're dog friendly or not, then I can judge my tolerance levels for animals that day, and make a decision.

I don't care. And no you can't leave dogs outside. Do you know how many dogs are being stolen these days.

Then leave the dog at home - it’s a food outlet!
Dogs have no place there.

What cafe or restaurant are you patronising where the public pick up food and put it back?

I walked into greggs in Keswick with a dog and was immediately turfed out which was fair enough. Keswick is so dog friendly I’d assumed it was ok. Turns out Greggs and Costa are about the only two places in town they can’t go in.

And Wetherspoons (which is fine by me as we can go in all the other pubs). At home we don't take our dogs shopping or out to eat all the time (sometimes they come to the pub with us, sometimes they stay at home) but we're in Keswick this week so they have to come everywhere as can't be left in the accommodation. We take turns going into shops and holding dogs outside as one is large and hairy and I don't like him being near very expensive clothing.

If i was on my own I'd leave them in the car and run in quickly for whatever I needed - I would never risk leaving them outside a shop, even in sight. Far too many dog thefts nowadays and my entire spaniel would be a likely candidate.

OneTwoThreeShake · 23/08/2023 09:39

Oh, it's a bit of a weird assumption to make that someone who takes their dog in a shop or pub doesn't also take them on decent walks. It isn't an either/or situation.

You might be referring to my post - and yes, to clarify, I know it's not an absolute either/or, however I would worry that some people might (unintentionally) slip into that situation, especially if short on time. That said, a short walk to the shops, while not as good as a proper walk, is favourable to no/very few walks at all.

InsectBiscuits · 23/08/2023 10:01

I wish our Gregg's allowed dogs. I pass one on a walk and it would be good to pop in on my way home and grab my free O2 coffee. There's always pigeons popping in there...

JimJonesLivesInMyHead · 23/08/2023 10:01

I've caught chickenpox, various bugs, colds, sore throats and Covid from people.

In my 50-odd years on this planet I've caught nothing from dogs.

I know who I prefer to see in shops and cafes

WeetabixTowels · 23/08/2023 10:02

I agree with you. My town has become insanely dog friendly and there was one in the burgers the other day trying to jump at the display meat. Grim

That’s not because dogs are kind lovely creatures who are doing their best to keep you well and humans are meanies purposefully giving you colds. That’s science 🤣🤣
Id rather see humans any day in a shop than a dog.

My friend owns a cafe and in the winter months its the dog owners who keep her afloat. Not many people are venturing out in the cold and wet (shit parking around here) but dog walkers have to take the pups out and they often pop in for something on the way home.

So wet dogs in cafes. Nice!!!

Don’t go in those cafes then if you don’t like it.

Dogs (with the exception of assistance dogs) have no place in any cafe or shop imo. Fail to understand why anyone takes their dog ‘shopping’.

This.

Honesly don't see a problem, most of them are wearing coats and some of them are more hygienic than the people I see in cafes regularly! Plus it's not like they're jumping up - they mostly lie down under the tables.

A random child has never wandered over when I’m eating at a restaurants or a picnic and eaten my food. Unlike dogs

No worse than wet, muddy dog walkers in cafes, surely?

I live in the Lakes and cafes/pubs are full of filthy, sweaty walkers who have spent all day on the fells. I suspect the dogs smell vastly more pleasant Grin

That's not my point. Im not talking about intent. You are far more likely to catch something from filthy humans snotting, sneezing and coughing with no sense of basic hygiene than you are from a dog.

That's science

Just don't tell my dog. We have a tough job keeping her out of Greg's!

I was just thinking the same thing! Mine would LOVE to be let into a pasty shop Grin

Mumsnetters do seem to have this happen to them an unfortunate amount of times. 🤣
