To be furious that no-one from our Royal Family will be in person at Sunday's WWC Final

I really feel that if this was the National Men's Team, the RF would be out in force. The Lionesses have really championed women's football and I am astonished that The Princess of Wales and Princess Charlotte won't be at Sunday's final, to support them. It is an amazing achievement to get to the final. The Queen of Spain and her daughter will be there !!! AIBU to think our RF should be heading straight to Australia?

I really feel that if this was the National Men's Team, the RF would be out in force.
Men's team No 1 in the world - tick
Men's team holder's of European trophy - tick
Men's team expected to win world cup (see above) - tick
World Cup held in Australia - tick

Did royal family fly out for the Final? Don't think they did.
In case anybody is wondering, I'm talking RWC 2003

I was trying to remember if there was any royals there in 2003, when I read the "they would be there if it was the men's team". Can't recall at all. Possible Harry was there, maybe William.

Certainly 2003 is a better comparison than 1966. So what if the queen handed the England men's team the trophy in 1966, it was in England. Very likely she was set to hand it over to the winning team anyway.

She didn't hand over the cup to the England men's team in 2003. No need to expect Charles to hand over a cup in Australia in 2023.

Not even Charlotte being present is the equivalent of Harry being there in 2003 (and I can't recall if he was). She's a child. In 2003 Harry and William were (well certainly Harry was) fully living their over privileged no responsibility, not considering the environment adult lives.

The Australian Governor General represents the head of state in Australia. Unfortunately the present incumbent is not worthy of the role.

I personally think seeing as he's President of the FA and it was held in another Commonwealth country, he should have been there all along.

But then royal 'experts' would be coming up with endless conspiracies

about 'he is there alone they are getting divorced' or 'he is wearing a shirt without a collar it is secret message to Meghan who he is cheating with'

Because they have too much time on their hands

It has not been lost on Australia that William as the future Head of State was supporting the Lionesses.

Im Australian. I really don't mind who William supports. Personally, the English team seems the more logical choice for him. I wouldn't expect him to support the Matildas (or Spain) over the Lionesses.

If they cite the reason for non-attendance as 'carbon footprint,' it will be almost hilarious.

Agree. He's on his very long extended summer break and women's sport isn't important enough to break that for and that's all that it is.

Every other excuse people are making for him could all easily be dealt with (or deflected from/spun) if he actually wanted to go.

Bunnycat101 · 18/08/2023 08:12

I don’t think they can win whatever they do. If they’d gone - they’d be vilified for going on a jolly to Australia, carbon footprint etc.

Cornettoninja · 18/08/2023 09:21

MattDamon · 17/08/2023 19:01

Eh? The game is happening on Sunday. They'll presumably be home shortly thereafter.

Yes, but it hasn’t happened at all yet has it? We don’t know what kind of reception may or may not be in the works upon their return.

Until the future actually happens it’s just speculation, speculation that may or may not be justified.

Yesabsolutely · 18/08/2023 11:01

I personally think that the date for the final should have been pencilled in with a contingency plan for one of the RF to be there if we got to the final.
Genuinely think this would have been the case ,if it was the men playing.
Someone could have jumped on a scheduled flight yesterday or even today so the cost and carbon footprint would not be such an issue!

Cornettoninja · 18/08/2023 11:12

how would have scheduling a flight for yesterday meant the carbon footprint wouldn’t be as much of an issue?

I think they mean a commercial flight, with other passengers, that was already going to be flying to Australia.

Rather than taking a private plane as they are prone to do on their way to give talks about the environment.

Cornettoninja · 18/08/2023 11:17

Ah, ok. Thanks @SunRainStorm

The head of FIFA has apparently caused problems with Australian police by asking to be ferried around and escorted like a head of state.

zingally · 18/08/2023 11:55

Couldn't care less tbh. It's just a game.

That being said, I imagine the RFs diaries get booked up months and even years ahead of time, and Australia is hardly in "day trip or long weekend territory".
And how old is Charlotte? 8? I wouldn't be buzzing at the idea of transporting my 8yo to the other side of the world for a single football match, even first class and royal luxury.

LaDeeDa123 · 18/08/2023 12:12

@zingally football is a very important part of English working-class culture. The fact that the women’s game has risen to such a high profile is ground breaking. I don’t expect everyone to get that but it’s true.

Glitterblue · 18/08/2023 12:15

BarbaraofSeville · 17/08/2023 12:59

This.

For everyone who would be 'furious' about perceived sexism, there's going to be someone else fuming about the carbon footprint if they did go, plus another one raging at the tone deafness due to CoL and 'people not being able to afford to get away this year'.

Exactly this. They can’t win.

But it's going to happen... Have no idea why you are arguing a potential compromise.

The head of FIFA causing problems, surely not, no head of FIFA has ever caused problems before, have they?

Meecrowavay · 19/08/2023 23:48

His statement: "Go out there and enjoy yourselves girls!"

Can you imagine him saying that to the men?! Incredibly patronising! I cringe for him now. Unbelievably missed the mark on this.

🤮 gross. Even calling them 'girls' how patronising.

Seeing the Spanish royalty in the crowd made him look like a tit. He should give up his football role if he isn't going to show up and give a damn.

I hate the way they have all these titles and honours for doing absolutely fuck all, when other people actually devote their careers and lives to various causes and community groups and get nothing to show for it.

I wonder if he paused his 'holiday' from doing nothing long enough to watch the match.

pinkfondu · 20/08/2023 14:10

Agreed, totally unacceptable

EmmaPaella · 20/08/2023 14:14

Oh come on, clearly William would be wrong if he went too.

HorseyMel · 20/08/2023 14:31

Are you actually "furious"?

Or is this like people say they are "starving" or "freezing" when they are no such thing?
