To be furious that no-one from our Royal Family will be in person at Sunday's WWC Final

I really feel that if this was the National Men's Team, the RF would be out in force. The Lionesses have really championed women's football and I am astonished that The Princess of Wales and Princess Charlotte won't be at Sunday's final, to support them. It is an amazing achievement to get to the final. The Queen of Spain and her daughter will be there !!! AIBU to think our RF should be heading straight to Australia?

Op are you really 'furious'?

Yeah, because football is more important than life and death. Or some such twaddle.Hmm

I was pleased he wasn’t given the state of the environment. No one other than the team and their entourage should be flying out there from
Britain for it.

Whilst I do agree with this, his team would have planned it with other diplomatic/charitable/his awards stuff and spun it to make it look like a beneficial trip in other ways. I think the crux of it is, he doesn't give a hoot because it's landed in the traditional time he takes his summer holiday.

You have to wonder what the point of paying for this family is when they can't even do the basics of representing us at world events.

WaltzingWaters · 17/08/2023 14:16

It’s a really long way! If it were in Europe then sure, they should go. But it’s the other side of the world. A whole lot of money and carbon footprint for a football game.

LoverofGreen · 17/08/2023 14:26

spanieleyes · 17/08/2023 12:55

And you would get complaints about " flying all that way just for a football match"!

Oh yes I can see the headlines now!

MrsMitford3 · 17/08/2023 14:28

Also the Queen of Spain is not Head of the Commonwealth-

Prince William is.

Think of how it would look to Australia as well as the climate issues, cost of living, security issues etc.

No one can know if william would be going if it was the men's team so those arguments just moot.

FlowersareEverything · 17/08/2023 14:29

According to the Royal Family’s engagement list the Prince of Wales will be travelling to New York for an Earthshot Summit tomorrow (of which he is the founder and president). I imagine that was booked a while ago.

Nah. He's not back to "work" until this time next month. That's when his earthshot event is.

If only there was more than one of them.

Oh that's right, taxpayers subsidise many of these extremely wealthy people's lifestyles on the understanding that they will represent the UK at events and build the country's profile overseas.

I'm sure between the lot of them, one of them could cancel their plans to occasionally smile and wave in the UK and arrange to smile and wave in Australia that week instead.

continentallentil · 17/08/2023 14:41

Furious is a bit OTT OP.

I’m guessing they’ll make it next time. Agree going forward it should be treated equally. They are a bit low in the ranks these days, which is part of the problem.

SpamFrittersYouSay · 17/08/2023 14:44

YABU to be furious . That's not a normal reaction to this situation.

Bluejaybean · 17/08/2023 14:49

I thought he might be there with Charlotte, as he was at the euro's when they won and shook the lionesses' hands afterwards.

I feel more "oh well" than "furious" though if he's not going.

All I'm really bothered about is that England win!

rainbowstardrops · 17/08/2023 14:50

You're furious? I think you need to get a grip. They're damned if they do and damned if they don't.
The old saying, 'You can't please all of the people all of the time' springs to mind.

poetryandwine · 17/08/2023 14:53

Thank you, @FlowersareEverything

If William is committed to New York someone else should go. The family, including the Waleses, make heavy use of helicopters and private jets. Assuming tickets could be found, and for a royal entourage of perhaps a dozen I do not believe that is a problem; mere mortals will be sacrificed - commercial flights to Australia are not one of the family’s bigger environmental sins.

Sending an 8 year old unless she is mad keen is too much, though. The Spanish queen’s daughters are older teens.

I am not furious because most of the remaining family is lazy and this is what I expect. But it is a slap in the face to the wonderful Lionesses.

DewinDwl · 17/08/2023 14:54

Sad to see that some posters are sneering at women's football. The matches are exciting and the players skilful, there's definitely a lot less barely contained aggression and petulant egos than in the men's world cup.

FlowersareEverything · 17/08/2023 14:55

Meecrowavay · 17/08/2023 14:38

You’re correct. I was on the wrong month!

poetryandwine · 17/08/2023 14:56

Oh, gosh! If William is available he should go.

notimagain · 17/08/2023 14:57

BoohooWoohoo · 17/08/2023 13:00

I agree but if he attended then there would be people angry about the environmental impact and cost of him flying for a football match. If he left right now, would he even get there on time ?

. If he left right now, would he even get there on time ?

Yep, quickest option would be the BA 15 tonight out of Heathrow (goes via Singapore) and he'd be in Sydney Saturday breakfast time....he could even manage out tomorrow night and make game time Sunday. Other options are available.

Now whether he should or not??

DewinDwl · 17/08/2023 14:57

Just checked the claims that the Spanish queen will be at the final. Yes, the queen and the youngest princess will be there. The eldest and heir to the throne can't attend because she's just started military academy 😮Now that's a good reason to miss a high profile event.

SunRainStorm · 17/08/2023 14:40

Huh? You clearly begrudge the RF being funded by taxpayers but you want to spend more (a lot more) flying out a member at short notice? Have you considered the costs of the security staff on a short notice trip across the world?

I’m not sure the hosting country would be particularly keen on unexpected pressures and costs they’d have to stump up too.

The RF don’t just travel, it’s a diplomatic excursion.

Meecrowavay · 17/08/2023 15:47

The point many are making is that it wouldn't have been short notice in the sense that if he had any intention of being there, the date of the final would have been pencilled in his diary for many months and plans put in place for a wider visit which could have been quietly dropped if England hadn't made the final.

He isn't going because he's on his holidays and that's more important to him. But we'll get a heartfelt video message with one or more of his kids as props.

UsingChangeofName · 17/08/2023 15:53

YABU to be 'furious' and 'astonished', yes.

I bet he wishes he could be there. William has been a long time supporter of the England Football Teams (women's and men's). Issue being, it is a HUGE distance. I bet he would be there is a shot if it were logistically possible.

It's a bit easier to get to Wembley than Australia!

the80sweregreat · 17/08/2023 15:57

The thread would be about his carbon footprint and the cost of security if he had gone
If it had been in a European country I'm sure someone might have gone to represent the Royals , but this is a long way to travel
I'm sure they will hold a reception for them of some kind once they return from there.

OneTwoThreeShake · 17/08/2023 16:02

Why is it so unbelievable or sexist? He didn't go to the men's finals in Qatar either. Travelling over 20,000 miles round trip to watch a football match would be preposterous.

Theroom · 17/08/2023 16:22

I wouldn't fly to Australia just to watch a football match for a few hours. How ridiculous. Nor would I expect the RF to do so.

In fact, I don't think I could tolerate flying to Australia these days unless I was going to be there for at least a month. It takes me a week to get over the jet lag.
