To be furious that no-one from our Royal Family will be in person at Sunday's WWC Final

I really feel that if this was the National Men's Team, the RF would be out in force. The Lionesses have really championed women's football and I am astonished that The Princess of Wales and Princess Charlotte won't be at Sunday's final, to support them. It is an amazing achievement to get to the final. The Queen of Spain and her daughter will be there !!! AIBU to think our RF should be heading straight to Australia?

If Mumsnet is anything to go by, most people spend a lot of their time being "furious", "annoyed" and "gutted" etc. over a whole range of "not that important in the grander scheme of things" things.

Have a nice cup of tea and think about something else.

LlynTegid · 17/08/2023 13:22

Her Majesty the Queen presented Bobby Moore with the trophy in 1966.

You think they should fly an 8 yr old girl half way across the world so her face can be photographed supporting a group of adult women???

LilyAndTheKing · 17/08/2023 13:23

It's not the same as men's football though is it? No matter how much people are suggesting that it is, there's no comparison.
For a start, wages, physicality and tbe men have not won anything for quite a time. I like watching most sports including men's football , but I can't get the same enthusiasm for the women's game.

Mylovelygreendress · 17/08/2023 13:24

So you expect William plus security to fly to Australia for a football match ?
No doubt he would then be criticised for flying so far for such a short time !

It has not been lost on Australia that William as the future Head of State was supporting the Lionesses.

The Australians are upset Prince William hasn't pretended he doesn't care who wins?

Dammed if they do. Dammed if they don’t on this one.
people would be up in arms on the carbon footprint of the flight if they went.

Agree with this. It's even shown in the answers on this thread.

hattie43 · 17/08/2023 13:26

They can't win , he's criticised for not going but would if it was the men , he goes but is criticised for flying .

PriamFarrl · 17/08/2023 13:27

Princess Charlotte is 8. Can you imagine the AIBU thread.

My 8 year old really loves a sport, as do her father and I. The team we support is going to be playing a very important match at the weekend. AIBU to fly us all to the other side of the world just to watch the match. I’m sure a 20 hour flight and resulting jet lag then another 20 hour back a few days later won’t cause my 8 year old DD too many problems.

Yes it would have been lovely to see them there but it’s not as simple as all that. Aside from the travel you have huge security implications and clearances.

ButterCrackers · 17/08/2023 13:27

Can they not watch the match on tv or a big screen somewhere?

sheworemellowyellow · 17/08/2023 13:27

It’s a bit much expecting Charlotte to go. She’s 8 or 9? That’s a brutal round trip even when you’re not expected to be on best behaviour for the cameras.

William should be there. He and the Spanish queen could travel together. The eco objections are BS really - they (all leaders, everywhere) take jets and choppers like they’re taxis.

morelippy · 17/08/2023 13:28

How do we know he's not on his way? I really hope he isn't though. Ridiculous way to go for a game of anything

BotterMon · 17/08/2023 13:29

YABU. For the reasons cited by PPs.

Xeren · 17/08/2023 13:30

Awww, that’s a shame. Didn’t the Queen present the England team with the trophies when they won?

Would be fitting since William’s the President for the FA. A missed opportunity but must be hard to schedule around guessing how far England will go in the tournament. Especially when it’s all the way in Australia.

LlynTegid · 17/08/2023 13:33

@StartupRepair I expect that if there is an agreement as to how to choose a head of state, Charles will be the last King of Australia.

Riapia · 17/08/2023 13:33

It’s only a game, nothing worth snapping and farting over.
😉😁😁😁

SunRainStorm · 17/08/2023 13:34

Not the children but someone should go.

What the fuck is the point of them if not showing up for things like this?

People talking about the late notice and cancellation of plans as though they have a classroom or children to teach or a surgery to perform. Hmm

This is literally what they are paid to do.

They can offset their travel. They can attend to other commitments while there to justify the trip. No reason it has to be a 24 hour visit. They're (ridiculously) also the royal family of Australia, it wouldn't kill them to pop their heads over and look like they give a shit.

I can't stand the whole concept but they can at least do the very cushy, easy, glamorous job that they didn't earn when moments like this arise IMO.

Uptoyou34 · 17/08/2023 13:35

I presume you are attending too OP considering you feel so strongly about it?

DdraigGoch · 17/08/2023 13:36

LlynTegid · 17/08/2023 13:22

Her Majesty the Queen presented Bobby Moore with the trophy in 1966.

We were hosting it, of course so she would presumably have presented it to West Germany had they won. I know that the King is King of Australia too but his duties are delegated to the Governor General, who will probably present this World Cup.

AlwaysJumping · 17/08/2023 13:39

DappledThings · 17/08/2023 13:00

That's ridiculously far to go for one game. For any sport and any sex playing it.

I think the issue is he would have gone if it was the men’s but he isn’t for the woman’s. Not the environmental side, but the fairness.
It was always likely so should have been pencilled in with space in his diary, like they would have done for the men’s

Ha, this!

Dotjones · 17/08/2023 13:42

Ridiculous to be "furious" about someone not flying to the other side of the world and back for a football game.

Yes, if it were the men's world cup final no doubt people would be keener to go. What sort of level of travelling support has gone to Australia though? The "normal" fan I mean. Have as many female (and male) England fans travelled out there as male (and female) would travel if Australia were hosting the World Cup final with England playing in the main tournament?

The fact is simply that there isn't the level of interest in female football as there is in male football. No surprise that royals aren't particularly interested in it either, anyway they'd get criticised if they did go because of the environmental impact.

BanditsOnTheHorizon · 17/08/2023 13:43

Furious? Really!

It's in Aus, if they did go they'd get slammed by the environmental brigade for flying, not to mention costs etc. if it was closer to home I don't doubt they would be in attendance. Personally I'm glad they aren't making a special trip to watch.

Flickersy · 17/08/2023 13:43

It would be nice but I can see a few issues:

  • the inevitable complaints from many about flying them halfway around the world (cost, environmental)
  • it could be seen as a bit of rubbing it in given Australia's in the commonwealth
  • which poor sods would lose their tickets so RF rep + security etc would attend?
  • there will be other engagements where RF rep is expected on Sat / Sun, how would you explain to that event / venue etc "oh sorry they got a better offer".
