To be furious that no-one from our Royal Family will be in person at Sunday's WWC Final

I really feel that if this was the National Men's Team, the RF would be out in force. The Lionesses have really championed women's football and I am astonished that The Princess of Wales and Princess Charlotte won't be at Sunday's final, to support them. It is an amazing achievement to get to the final. The Queen of Spain and her daughter will be there !!! AIBU to think our RF should be heading straight to Australia?

Why isn't Wills going? It's his patronage, right?

Fuckingfuming1 · 17/08/2023 12:54

That’s quite a thing to arrange logistically in less than 48 hours, then a 24 hour flight I would imagine their diaries get booked up years in advance

drpet49 · 17/08/2023 12:54

I agree with you. How very disappointing William isn’t even bothering to turn up. He would if it were the men’s team.

Xrays · 17/08/2023 12:54

Can’t stand the RF but yes the game should be treated exactly the same as the men’s and if that means the RF is normally there for the men’s then yes they should be there for the women’s. Double standards.

crosstalk · 17/08/2023 12:54

Bit of a tough one. This isn't Europe where many of the mens finals have been anwhich is easy to get to if and when your team gets through. This is a 20 hour flight one way. Bit presumptuous to book for the final if it had turned out to be Spain v Sweden or any other non-UK permutation. And diplomatically difficult to support England over Australia.

MillWood85 · 17/08/2023 12:55

I do feel that William should be there, but it's hardly a short plane ride away. And his kids are on school holidays.

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 17/08/2023 12:55

Dammed if they do. Dammed if they don’t on this one.
people would be up in arms on the carbon footprint of the flight if they went.

Luana1 · 17/08/2023 12:55

That's quite an extreme reaction - surely a recorded message of good luck would be fine. Could you genuinely drop everything and get to Australia on time?

spanieleyes · 17/08/2023 12:55

And you would get complaints about " flying all that way just for a football match"!

ApolloandDaphne · 17/08/2023 12:55

Surely it completely depends on what things they already have planned for Sunday and the days round about it? It's not exactly a short trip.

Mischance · 17/08/2023 12:56

Oh good heavens! Are you sure this is worth getting upset about? How can they just head off to Oz at the drop of a hat!? To assume that they would have been able to do that for a men's team is pure speculation.

RiverLen · 17/08/2023 12:56

Will should go as head of the FA

Hbh17 · 17/08/2023 12:56

The Prince of Wales is an advocate for saving the planet/campaigning re climate change. He would get a lot of criticism if he jetted off to Australia just for a football match, so frankly he can't win. I'm sure he'll arrange to meet the team back in the UK.

Lindy2 · 17/08/2023 12:57

If a royal does fly out there, there will no doubt be complaints about the cost and carbon footprint of such a long flight.

The location makes it very tricky.

They would have planned it in for the men's WC, with a back-up commitment if the England team hadn't made it.

goldfootball · 17/08/2023 12:58

I thought this was very reasonable- absolutely terrible look for them to fly to Australia for one football match.

Yes I agree they can't really win and flying out would look bad, though not so bad if they went on a scheduled flight.

Aren't England's women European champions? So reaching the final was a very real possibility, meriting at least a pencil-in on their calendar. How busy is Kate anyway? The Queen of Spain managed it.

This.

For everyone who would be 'furious' about perceived sexism, there's going to be someone else fuming about the carbon footprint if they did go, plus another one raging at the tone deafness due to CoL and 'people not being able to afford to get away this year'.

DappledThings · 17/08/2023 13:00

That's ridiculously far to go for one game. For any sport and any sex playing it.

BoohooWoohoo · 17/08/2023 13:00

I agree but if he attended then there would be people angry about the environmental impact and cost of him flying for a football match. If he left right now, would he even get there on time ?

sashagabadon · 17/08/2023 13:01

It’s in Australia! Not a great message re. Flying etc.
but I agree if in Europe should definitely go

skippy67 · 17/08/2023 13:01

Yeah, YABU to be "furious".

skippy67 · 17/08/2023 13:01

And "astonished"!
