To be furious that no-one from our Royal Family will be in person at Sunday's WWC Final

I really feel that if this was the National Men's Team, the RF would be out in force. The Lionesses have really championed women's football and I am astonished that The Princess of Wales and Princess Charlotte won't be at Sunday's final, to support them. It is an amazing achievement to get to the final. The Queen of Spain and her daughter will be there !!! AIBU to think our RF should be heading straight to Australia?

Furious about this, oh fgs get a bloody hold on reality. It's great they are playing but it doesn't change anyone's life in the real world. Poverty, famine, war and death will still continue.
No, I couldn't give a shit about football or any sport with over paid players.

Lionesssupporter · 17/08/2023 16:50

@OneTwoThreeShake - England wasn't in the final in Qatar, it was France v Argentina Football

PinkFootstool · 17/08/2023 17:02

FMLprincess Charlotte is 8 years old.

Imagine demanding that her parents fly her out to Australia for a single football match because she "likes football.

This isn't the gotcha of the Royal Family some people seem to think it is.

Apart from the huge waste in travel, you've got to factor in the cost of the security teams travelling with them, security in Oz, the flights, the vehicles, the hotels, the dignitaries who'll want a photo op at fancy dinners etc....

Batshit.

BroganLee · 17/08/2023 17:03

I would love to go to the final. I have been cheering them on and regularly go to see Arsenal Ladies play. If I had their money I'd be on the next plane. I don't think the Men's team would be snubbed. It's not surprising, just disappointing. The Wales's could have holidayed in Australia this month and supported all the matches as a family. It's a shame.

MattDamon · 17/08/2023 17:56

Given the distance, a good compromise would be if he hosted a welcome home reception for them.

The younger Spainish princess going is meant to be a huge football fan and plays the sport herself.

I do feel that William should be there, but it's hardly a short plane ride away. And his kids are on school holidays.

hardly a short plane ride away? It’s not like he’s got a job to get back to for Monday. And I’m sure the nanny will cope without him there.

CwmYoy · 17/08/2023 18:01

Not understanding the fury. It's only a game FFS!

I’m not sure the people employed as his security (for starters) would appreciate having their needs dismissed so easily. But fuck them I suppose? Or if aus would provide security, the people who suddenly get landed with a whole heap of security measures to implement.

If you’re going to take a swipe at the privilege angle at least have cursory consideration for those employed as part of that privilege.

TBF being required to show up for a load of events, no matter how enjoyable, cuts into the holiday spirit. But I am with you in principle: the Wales parents at least could have and should have planned for this. If the family had planned holiday in Australia, which could be quite fun for their DC, they could hide away until, say, the semifinals and then attend the big matches.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he did. But this isn’t a scenario that’s happened or could happen yet so it’s a bit early to be calling for compromises. 🤷‍♀️

StupidHip · 17/08/2023 18:10

He did go to the Euros final? This one's in Australia. That's a pretty good reason not to go for a couple of hours.

Bromptotoo · 17/08/2023 18:13

I'd imagine the Governor General or similar will be there as the Monarch's representative.

Isn't that how it works in those 'Dominions' where the UK Monarch is head of state?

Pretty sure the point of the thread has gone WHOOoOOoOSh over your head so I’ll spell it out for you:

if the men’s team were in a World Cup final, the security would be australia-bound on overtime before Sunday. Hope that helps.

StupidHip · 17/08/2023 18:27

I have to go to "fun" events as part of my work. It is a privilege to get the tickets sometimes, but it's still very much work, being on duty the whole time, having to make small talk with people you don't know or care about, have nothing in common with. There's no way I'd be doing it if I was on holiday.

Imagine how much worse it would be of you knew every facial expression (and those of your DC) would be broadcast round the world?

I know no one thinks what they do is work, but those kinds of events are the most draining part of my job, for me.

Thanks for the patronising but as your point relies on a fictional scenario that has no basis in reality I don’t really care about taking instruction from you.

Bankholidayboredom23 · 17/08/2023 18:35

The Governor General should go. It is his job to represent the King in Australia. Absolutely no need for anyone to fly 20 hours to go there.

trudynotmoody · 17/08/2023 18:36

Apparently it would interrupt his holiday. Holiday from what you might ask.

Pretty sure the under-valuing of women’s sport has a HUGE basis in reality.

pilates · 17/08/2023 18:39

Wow massive overreaction. The RF can’t win whatever they do. Carbon footprint and all that. Imagine the frothing on here!

ittakes2 · 17/08/2023 18:41

I think you need to give your head a wobble. It’s likely he has a long standing commitment and that commitment might be upset if they were shunted for something else.

look, if you have to make up a statement to give your point more credibility you’re probably talking shite.

Eh? The game is happening on Sunday. They'll presumably be home shortly thereafter.

It's not like he just takes a fortnight off. According to the royal diary the only ones working in the next 8 weeks are Anne, the Gloucesters and the Edinburghs (and that's very sparse!). They're so out of touch.

If Mumsnet is anything to go by, most people spend a lot of their time being "furious", "annoyed" and "gutted" etc. over a whole range of "not that important in the grander scheme of things" things.

Have a nice cup of tea and think about something else.

Don't forget 'incandescent with rage'!

Iforgotmyusernameagainandagain · 17/08/2023 19:29

@whirlyhead I forgot 'livid' 😂I have never heard anyone use these particular terms in real life, but if I ever do I'll just know they're a Mumsnetter (of the dramatic variety)
