AIBU to insist bathroom window stays shut in winter

I've got a new lodger and she's been putting on the heating in her room (can control individual bedroom heating) but she will leave the bathroom window open all the time.

I don't think it's a bad thing to leave the bathroom window open, however it's a bit contradictory - she's always cold and the bathroom window needs to be open all year round. The shower doesn't have a door and it can be cold, so it's not the best in winter generally as despite an extractor fan it's best if the window is also opened (or at least after you've showered).

I hate confrontation but I can see her being "cold" in winter and using up lots of gas and as well as keeping the upstairs bathroom window open.

AIBU to expect it to be shut the majority of the day?

The bathing room is not used like a living room where I would agreed more too and fro working would be messed

What?

Are you drunk?

Can anyone explain how she's "cold" yet also keeps the bathroom window open?

Surely if you are cold you would be shutting windows?

I like the freshness of an open window. My bedroom window is always open at least a crack unless arsehole neighbours are shouting in their garden at gone midnight.
If my bathroom had a window, that would be open too. I would rather be in a cold but aired room with lots of blankets than a stuffy, overheated one.

None of that matters though. As much as I've smirked to myself reading all the reasons why nobody's suggestions could ever work (they were never going to, were they!)... it's your house. You're allowed to say something.

Lodger putting on the heating - www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4862368-lodger-putting-on-the-heating you should chat to this poster, they also have a lodger who leaves the bathroom window open all the time, has the heating on in the summer, and seems to want the heat from the bathroom radiator to warm other rooms...

Why? It's totally unnecessary unless you're drying clothes or something similar in there.

My bathroom windows are always open because I like fresh air.

So your lodger manually puts the heating on in her room despite it being summer, you have no idea why and aren't prepared to talk to her about it.

Your lodger keeps opening the bathroom window and you keep closing it. You expect Mumsnet to know why but don't want to talk to your lodger about it.

The bathroom radiator is on, it's controlled by thermostat outside the door and apparently bathroom door and window both being open is triggering it to come on.

You are concerned about heat being lost through the window but don't want to close the door to keep the heat in because you're bedroom radiator is broken so you want the bathroom radiator to heat your bedroom.

You also need the door open for (moon?) light from the bathroom because there is no light switch on the landing. You've not explained why you can't just put your BEDROOM light on to allow light on the landing so that you can get ti bathroom in the night.

Are you on fucking glue?????

FrangipaniBlue · 16/08/2023 00:05

The solution is simple:

  1. sort the radiator in your bedroom
  2. use your bedroom light to see on the landing (or get a torch or, and here's a radical idea, have an extra light switch fitted!)
  3. close your bathroom door
  4. talk to your lodger and ask her to keep the bathroom window on latch
  5. talk to your lodger about the madness of having her bedroom heating on in summer

  1. give yer heed a wobble

How do you know if someone is inside?

I don't see the point of having the radiator on in the bathroom and the bathroom window open as well.

Also the radiator in my bedroom doesn't work (long story) so In winter I'm generally cold without any window open... so I would like the heat form the corridor to reach my bedroom.

My window is open all year round (it’s broken and won’t close) and I have the radiator on in the winter. Mainly because the towels hang on it to dry. The window ventilates the condensation caused by the towels constantly being dried - although the radiator isn’t on 24/7. I also love a warm towel after a shower. Currently no hearing on as the house is still too warm with the summer weather.

ChristmasKraken Maybe they should. Who'd have thought there were two people who are really bothered about bathroom windows...
