AIBU to insist bathroom window stays shut in winter

I've got a new lodger and she's been putting on the heating in her room (can control individual bedroom heating) but she will leave the bathroom window open all the time.

I don't think it's a bad thing to leave the bathroom window open, however it's a bit contradictory - she's always cold and the bathroom window needs to be open all year round. The shower doesn't have a door and it can be cold, so it's not the best in winter generally as despite an extractor fan it's best if the window is also opened (or at least after you've showered).

I hate confrontation but I can see her being "cold" in winter and using up lots of gas and as well as keeping the upstairs bathroom window open.

AIBU to expect it to be shut the majority of the day?

If the window is wide open with the radiator up full then yeah, I can see why that would be annoying.

Just ask lodger to put it back on the latch when done. Easy.

The main rooms for causing damp and condensation problems are kitchens and bathrooms. Ventilation and heat are both needed to prevent mould and other structural problems. It's not about germs.

Neither are issues though..... when showering open the window to let out the steam and the extractor comes on with the light.

Kitchen use the cooker extractor and open the window.

It's not an issue.

As I've written before ventilation isn't her concern as she's never opened her bedroom window in summer..:

If your bedroom radiator doesn't work then I'd have thought it was even more important to have a window open.

Our bathroom window is in the roof and it's open all year round all of the time. I do try and close it if it's heavy rain but more often than not I just mop the rain up later.

CantThinkOfANameAtAll · 14/08/2023 21:54

It's not fixable. I can cope with my bedroom how it is, because I have measures..... but ultimately I'm not comfortable having the heating on and a window open all year round....
If its not fixable then you need to replace it, or get something different...or not have a lodger. I really don't think either you or your housing situation is suited to someone else living there, especially someone paying good money.

Exactly the reasons over 90% of people have said on here. I would’ve explained but others have so didn’t think I’d need to!

We tend to have it shut over night but always open during the day unless someone is showering. Perhaps there’s a compromise here

Mummumgem · 14/08/2023 21:54

I have a door closer on my bathroom, I hate bathroom doors being left open, my bathroom is down the hall, but if left open coming out the kitchen or through the front door, the first thing you see is the loo !, so I’ve a door closer on it to keep it shut.

put a lock on the door then there’s No walking in on anyone- not rocket science!

ActDottie · 14/08/2023 21:55

Pretty much always have mine open. Best way to ventilate it even with a fan.

turkeytwizzlerss · 14/08/2023 21:55

My concern is also that she's cold in summer time and turning on the heating in her bedroom so how does she expect to shower in winter time? The place will be freezing.....

Just tell her it has to stay on the catch, and continually close it if she leaves it open.
It's your house, if she doesn't like how you live she can leave.

purplebluediscorain · 14/08/2023 21:56

@cruffinsmuffin im thinking this too I remember seeing this thread previously.

HappiDaze · 14/08/2023 21:56

My bathroom window is open 24/7 because I can't trust anyone to open it during or after their bath or shower

Your house doesn't get cold?

It's already costing me a lot to heat the house (it's really old and not insulated) so I can't justify an open window.... she's not caring about mould or airing the place... it's her preference but I don't know why (without asking her):

Give her notice OP. Dont take in any others. You aren't suited to being a landlord.

Simonjt · 14/08/2023 21:58

turkeytwizzlerss · 14/08/2023 21:49

@Simonjt yes it's constantly open as it lets in light for the hallways.

Even if it was closed the radiator would still be on and the window open.... how can I justify that..... I just don't understand why someone needs a window constantly open.

Turn the radiator off and buy a lightbulb for the hallway, it’s also completely innapropriate to use the bathroom with the door open, that is predatory behaviour, was your lodger aware you would be exposing yourself?

In winter you don't get cold? Going into a room with an open window and it being zero degrees and you showering?

OP posts:
turkeytwizzlerss · 14/08/2023 21:59

@Simonjt why are you being weird? Predatory behaviour.... weirdo. Making up stuff

OP posts:

We just close the bathroom door. I really do see your point here, especially with her having her heating on but the bathroom window wide open. However, like you said the window could be opened on the latch. As long as there is airflow and close the bathroom door.

havr you and a chat with her?

Because I don't bow down to how others want to treat the house?

Surely you would be saying that to her - she's not flexible is she not?

Typical mums net behaviour though...

Using a bathroom with the door open and expecting your lodge to is predatory and sexually innapropriate, I’m amazed you can’t see that!

QueSyrahSyrah · 14/08/2023 22:01

I'd hate to live somewhere where my access to fresh air and heat was at someone else's whim.

At my last rental before I bought (granite house, freezing in winter) I liked to be warm, so my landlord approached me and we had a chat, then adjusted my rent accordingly to cover the excess heating cost.

You can't accept the extra money from rent but then try and dictate how they live. You can price the rent accordingly.

Mine is always left open, we don’t have heating and we don’t get cold in a warm shower!

You are being a little dramatic!

What do you mean by the shower doesn’t have a door? It’s a walk in shower?

So the other thing is that I don't have a light switch outside my bedroom, so for me to get any light I would have to walk along the corridor etc and it's pitch black unless the door is open.

So that's why I also keep the door open.

I just don't think she would also be able to cope with closing the door as well.

I find it weird she doesn't open her bedroom window either.

OP posts:
turkeytwizzlerss · 14/08/2023 22:03

@Gnomegnomegnome yes it's walk in so doesn't keep in the heat.

I'm not being dramatic. I have learnt to cope with the coldness but being in a warm shower and stepping out of the shower in winter isn't pleasant.

Op, it just feels like you are bringing up
excuses and dodging questions.

Have you spoken to her?

get a lamp or battery operated lights that people put on their staircase and they light up with movement.

also, please try to remember you posted in AIBU, asking if you were being unreasonable. Most ppl have said yes.
what more?

Gnomegnomegnome · 14/08/2023 22:05

TALK TO HER 😂
