To hate those new front doors with the big bar?

Slowly lots of neighbours seem to be replacing their perfectly nice front door with grey ones with a big bar as a handle and a letter box at floor level.

I don’t know why but they make me irrationally annoyed!

We actually consulted a panel of postmen and women before choosing and installing our front door.

Naturally, we went for wood with stained glass, which we subsequently painted a fetching shade of lilac (note: not grey).

It just makes me feel so superior to the sheeple on our street (all two of them) who have a front door with a bar instead of a handle. On clear days my favourite pastime is to peer through our stained glass and judge them.

Poivresel · 14/08/2023 15:54

In France the letter box has to be on the boundary and at the height of the
La Poste van window so the postie doesn’t have to get out of their vehicle!

I moved into a new build house that has one but fortunately I was there the day the MASSIVE handle was supposed to be fitted so I asked them not to put it on.

Then I had a normal door handle fitted and I painted the prison grey with French chic.

When I was at my neighbours house I noticed that they have to pull their door closed from the inside with the tiny lock-turning knob. So MASSIVE bar on the outside and pip-squeak knob on the inside.

Theroom · 14/08/2023 15:55

I don't mind the colour or the bar, but I get a rage over floor height post boxes. Probably from teenage trauma as a newspaper delivery girl.

someone has one like that in bright blue near me. Makes their house look like a leisure centre

Oh yes! There's one like that in the estate I drive past. Leisure centre is exactly the vibe!

They’re really ugly. Beautiful old house nearby had one fitted a few years ago when undergoing renovation. It makes me irrationally angry whenever I drive past.

I live in an area where there are lots of 50s/60s/70s properties and I think they’re a nice way to make them look a bit more modern. I also like a traditional front door but they look a bit weird here on boxy or brutalist houses.

I actually had a look at them a couple of years and was really surprised by the cost of a new door or even just a big bar! As someone else said, they are convenient to grab. I don’t like having to close a door with a knocker or little tab on the lock. In the end I just spent about £30 painting my upvc door and adding a black handle 😆

I agree. We live on a 70s estate and quite a few people have updated their houses and they seem to work quite well on this particular style of house. We previously lived in London and had a beautiful Victorian style front door which I'd love to get here but I don't think it would suit the house.

billycat321 · 14/08/2023 16:23

I deliver our village newsletters and hate having to go down on my knees to reach floor level letterboxes. I am a reasonably fit octogenarian but find it a bit much!

Yes this.

We're absolutely guilty of having the kind of door so loathed by the OP - not a grey one, but have the long bar handle etc. I absolutely love it tbh and think our house looks great, but then I would, I chose it Grin However, we have a 1960s property and as per the above, the style works well. We kept the original bricks when we renovated, and chose a door colour to complement those bricks.

I agree though that this door style looks completely wrong on other ages / types of property, especially when people opt for a grey colour, as very often they just clash with brickwork or window style which looks awful.

BCBird · 14/08/2023 16:41

I don't like them too. They look.like something that should be on a community centre.

They're the dado rails of 2023. I’ve no idea why folk would spend what, £1000k or more or something that will date so quickly. At least with dado rails you could just whip them off and paint the walls.

I hate to tell you but dado rails are back, they are in Ikea showrooms!

Yorkshireinlondon · 14/08/2023 16:56

I have found my people. My pet hate is the trend for grey houses - too many beautiful 1920s / Edwardian houses in my area of NW London have now become soulless grey boxes with these doors, grey clad walls, black window frames and those sliding grey slatted gates. The new owners then add grey resin drives and then flood the area with their security or "feature" lights. It all looks so soulless and devoid of character. I much prefer my brick and pebble-dashed look with an actual lawn and a magnificent Magnolia tree! They all get to admire the tree and all I get to do is look at the sad grey boxes.... Still they will soon be out of fashion. I have already seen one house where the grey is being removed and being taken back to brick, so there is hope!

diddl · 14/08/2023 16:56

Why are low letter boxes a thing?

Zingy123 · 14/08/2023 17:03

As a postie we hate them almost as much as those tacky door bows 🙈

Daphnis156 · 14/08/2023 17:11

This is one reason why exclusive areas do not allow inappropriate front doors, or even poor looking colours- when you buy you have to agree to various conditions which are policed by self-appointed busy bodies.

Instahome2 · 14/08/2023 17:13

I've just ordered our new front door, deposit paid this morning. It took us weeks to decide, none of the styles or colours seemed to fit with our 1960s home. I almost picked one with the bar handle but decided against it as the kids would lock themselves out. All I knew is that I didn't want a vulva front door, you know, those ones with the () shaped glass.

phobiaofsocialmedia · 14/08/2023 17:24

IMustdomoreexercise "Don't you care about the posties having to bend down?"

No - I'm just one selfish individual with a modern front door and a grey interior. I go to all inclusive resorts too. Like I said - a terrible person.

I don't drive a German car though.

@phobiaofsocialmedia I assume you like crushed velvet grey cushions and shiny silver ornaments as well? And maybe a bit of pale pink to offset the grey?
Bloody monster.

Come now. That's a lazy stereotype. Not everybody uses blush pink to give a "pop of colour". Some of these people use teal instead.

Really bugs me when they've replaced one of these, for one of those bar ones!

I've never understood people who buy a period property and then promptly start ripping out all of the period features. Bonus points if they've ripped out the beautiful garden too and put astro grass down.

That's because they're a piece of piss to open with a sharp nudge, never mind a screwdriver.

DdraigGoch · 14/08/2023 15:14

What's accessible about a floor-height letterbox?

Compared to not being able to get in and out of your own home easily or keep it secure?

I've just got a fairly bog standard wooden door with the inbuilt multipoint deadbolt system and waist level letterbox. It's an absolute bastard to get into or to close and lock if I'm on the needing-a-crutch-or-two and my hands are hurting stage of disease. Fortunately, it does have level access of a sort, just a steep slope from street to door, but the post still ends up on the hall floor from whatever point it enters and has to be picked up with a grabber - no room to fit a cage without stopping it opening fully - so it makes no difference to me, other than the waist level letterbox makes it possible for people to attempt break in by taking the front off to give a slot wide enough to get to the internal handle, which they wouldn't be able to do if it were at ground level.

Fortunately, I've managed to get the double lock/bolt mechanism to work before leaving, rather than giving up in pain/lack of balance, so they've only been able to partially disassemble the thing three times and not actually get in.

Elphame · 14/08/2023 18:41

I dislike them too - I think they are really ugly.

My front door is actually unique as the stained glass in it was made especially by a stained glass artist.
