To hate those new front doors with the big bar?

Slowly lots of neighbours seem to be replacing their perfectly nice front door with grey ones with a big bar as a handle and a letter box at floor level.

I don’t know why but they make me irrationally annoyed!

CantFindTheBeat · 14/08/2023 13:30

I don't mind them, aesthetically, but I don't think floor level letterboxes should be allowed.

Poor postie having to kneel on the floor 1000s of times a day 😞

Spaghettine · 14/08/2023 13:30

Yet again showing that you do not know the meaning of the word unique.

Embarrassing name change fail 🖐️

Do you have nothing better to do? You're it even interested in the thread, just my opinion. You really like me or what?

SwedishEdith · 14/08/2023 13:32

Yeah, they're ugly. Once I saw them described on here as like McDonald's toilet doors, that's how I see them. Maybe look okay on an architect designed new build but on your bog standards 1930s semi, they're a no from me.

Spaghettine · 14/08/2023 13:33

Porridgeislife · 14/08/2023 13:24

They’re not my cup of tea but I’ve never understood frothing over other people’s design choices. Unless you’re living there, or it’s a conservation zone, what harm is done?

We all live in the same environment, so people are going to have opinions on others design choices, aren't they? If your neighbours do a whacky design, you don't have an opinion

Also, these alterations do happen in conservation areas lol not everyone gets pp, and landlords aren't bothered about design

BusinessClass · 14/08/2023 13:33

I was going to get one of those doors but at the last minute changes my
mind as I was worried it would date quickly - however I am having grey framed windows footed soon! Ooooops

TokyoSushi · 14/08/2023 13:35

I like them, we live on a newish build estate and they are everywhere here!

Kat19899 · 14/08/2023 13:36

I live in an area where there are lots of 50s/60s/70s properties and I think they’re a nice way to make them look a bit more modern. I also like a traditional front door but they look a bit weird here on boxy or brutalist houses.

I actually had a look at them a couple of years and was really surprised by the cost of a new door or even just a big bar! As someone else said, they are convenient to grab. I don’t like having to close a door with a knocker or little tab on the lock. In the end I just spent about £30 painting my upvc door and adding a black handle 😆

JazzyBBG · 14/08/2023 13:36

I have one - shoot me now!
It suits my rather unusual 1980's house. I wouldn't put one in an Edwardian house.
I don't think they are particularly new though I've had it 7+ years. As per pp I think they are much better than UPVC and the composite is a lot warmer too. I took out a wooden one because it was drafty.

hallana · 14/08/2023 13:39

They are hellishly ugly.

WotNoUserName · 14/08/2023 13:39

I hate low letter boxes.

I helped my DC deliver leaflets and there were so many new build estate. I expect there is a lot of ring doorbell footage of me groaning as I yet again have to crouch down on my aged knees to shove a leaflet through their stiff double letterbox with a brush in the middle. I curse them all!

No opinion on the actual doors. Just no to floor level letter boxes.

Riapia · 14/08/2023 13:40

There’s a road near me where all the houses are built of the same colour red brick.
The sheeples were about in the 1930’s.
😉😁😁😁

7eleven · 14/08/2023 13:40

I think they’re quite nice, in the right property.

I also have a resin driveway 🙀😂

theemmadilemma · 14/08/2023 13:40

You are not wrong.

The previous owners put one on our 1930's house. 😭

I will replace it one day with something more suitable.

Yes agree - I have helped DC with leaflet and also newspaper delivery and a floor-level letterbox is the worst.

The best thing tbh is a separate mailbox - on the wall or even on the gatepost.

Showdogworkingdog · 14/08/2023 13:42

There’s an entire Facebook group devoted to followers of this fad - Hunbelievable it’s called. Features lots of the Dr surgery/municipal building style front doors plus grey on grey interiors, white stone chippings, Astro turf and (my own nemesis) coffee tables that are also mirrors. Don’t look it up OP, it’ll tip you right over the edge 😝

WickedSerious · 14/08/2023 13:47

wutheringkites · 14/08/2023 12:33

I hate them. They look like crappy office doors.

Also hate the letter box right at the bottom of the door trend - either put it in the middle or install a separate box for post.

That's what they remind me of,I used to work in a factory and the double doors leading to the reception area were just like this.

Seasidechippylover · 14/08/2023 13:47

Why does everyone get so het up about other people's design choices 🤣

OneHornedFlyingPurplePeopleEater · 14/08/2023 13:49

We have one, but in a bright colour.

Our letterbox is also normal height, in a side panel and horizontal. Our postie thanked us for it!

I hate the floor ones, or the vertical ones.

I like the handle though.

Spaghettine · 14/08/2023 13:18

@BloodyPrime 🖐️🖐️

I do understand. As I said, I work in this area. In my OPINION putting on features like that is because you think your house looks better. You think your taste is unique

You clearly don't understand the word. Unique means one of a kind. The only one doing it. Yes, obviously people who follow trends like this do it because they think it makes their house look better - nobody is disputing your OPINION over that. But they can clearly see that they're following a trend if half the street have the same door, so they won't think their taste is unique (you seem to be talking about 'unique' as though it means special or trendy, which it doesn't). You're very welcome to your OPINION that they think their taste is unique - but it makes no sense at all.

MummBRaaarrrTheEverLeaking · 14/08/2023 13:55

We've just ordered one (runs and hides)
But we're going to get a proper postbox on the outside wall, low letter boxes aren't that great.

We're also having some of our living room walls painted grey.

I just thought they looked smart!! I'm the furthest thing from a sheeple Hun you can get - maybe I have an inner Hun longing to be free! Grin

Haha I need to find this

I dislike fake grass but think that’s perfectly rational 😁I like white stone chippings. Glass coffee tables… I guess would be okay in a property with no children. Imagine the sticky hand and fingerprints!

saltinesandcoffeecups · 14/08/2023 13:57

I’m not a fan. Mostly because I don’t like a lot of glass in a front door (like the one pictured in the thread). But I’m sure there are things others hate about my house.

I’m just jealous about you getting mail delivered to your actual house. It’s a quirk in my neighborhood (US) that I have to have a mailbox across the street despite having a perfectly functioning mail slot (letterbox) in my house.

Crossstich · 14/08/2023 13:58

Spaghettine · 14/08/2023 13:14

@ManateeFair I'm allowed an opinion, hun.

My opinion is that anyone who rips out traditional features and puts in anthracite UPVC windows and a fridge doors thinks they're taste is unique and better than traditional

I work in sales and letting sand this is my opinion

What you gonna do about it🖐️

They don't think their taste is unique though. How can they when they see other people with the same style.
They think they look nicer than what was there before. They don't think they are unique

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 14/08/2023 14:01

I don’t really like those either OP.

I don’t like my own front door much either - it’s black and modern but in a more traditional front door like style than those fridge ones. But I wish the people who sold it to me had kept the original 30s front door as they’re so much nicer!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 14/08/2023 14:02

I don’t think low post boxes should be allowed as it’s so much harder for the postman/ postwoman.
