To hate those new front doors with the big bar?

Slowly lots of neighbours seem to be replacing their perfectly nice front door with grey ones with a big bar as a handle and a letter box at floor level.

I don’t know why but they make me irrationally annoyed!

@ShirleyPhallus you've never seen a beautiful house ruined by the grey windows etc? Of course they think they're unique! That they're house looks better because they slapped render over it😂😂

Miss me with the MN stuff pls

I live in an area of edwardian terraced houses and a few have them and they look bloody awful. However i think they look nice on the modern school building nearby.

This. It is a TRAVESTY to put these on an Edwardian house. On a modern style newer home, no problem.

They are not my taste at all but I do know what you mean when something just gets on your last nerve!

The fridge/freezer door look.

Sheeples.

I don't like the grey doors at all, personally - they're really not for me. But it's no 'sheeple'-ish to have one of those than it is to have a painted wooden one like millions of other people do.

Fashions in interiors and exteriors come and go. Always have, always will. Most of the desirable period features in old houses were naff modern cliches at the time they were added. In 80 years' time, people will be clamouring for 'an original grey 2020s front door', I'm sure.

secretllama · 14/08/2023 12:38

Bet you're cool and edgy 🤣

Probably with the standard UPVC doors like most others have. Unless they’re so cool and edgy they’ve invented a new replacement us plebs don’t know about 🤣🤣

Timeless01 · 14/08/2023 13:05

I had a new front door recently and deliberately asked for a normal door handle although the long bar type handles are apparently more popular.

AnnieKayTee · 14/08/2023 13:06

Oh I hate them aswel along with the grey window frames. Every new house round near me has them and they just look awful.

Do you actually know what 'unique' means?

As @ShirleyPhallus said, nobody who has their house done like that thinks they are 'unique'. They are fully aware that they are following a modern trend and that they aren't being innovators by having their house rendered. They don't think they're the only person to have done this, or even that it's unusual. They simply saw other houses that looked that, and liked it.

There are a couple of houses like this down my street. I'm not keen on the look myself, but I also accept that it's not my house and therefore none of my business.

I really dislike huge door numbers imprinted in glass above new doors too, quite a few of these on big houses near me.

Why? One of the things that does my head in is homes without obvious, well marked numbers (or names). It makes life far easier for delivery drivers etc.

Humidititties · 14/08/2023 13:11

I agree with you, they look like office/business doors. Not liking the grey windows either but each to their own

NeverDropYourMooncup · 14/08/2023 13:01

I quite like the way that something meant to provide greater accessibility to people of all heights and mobility (as it's a lot easier to use when using a wheelchair, being short, being very tall and when wrangling a pair of crutches than reaching for a tiny thing around a keyhole or sticking your hand in a letterbox) has been sold as a stylish design choice. Same with wet rooms and open plan inside.

It's not surprising that some people absolutely hate it.

Christ, I best not divulge my opinions on the latest “living etc” magazine to you or I might get called racist for not liking black architraves.

FadeAwayAndRadiate · 14/08/2023 13:14

Agree @iwantfabulous it's minging.

Spaghettine · 14/08/2023 13:14

@ManateeFair I'm allowed an opinion, hun.

My opinion is that anyone who rips out traditional features and puts in anthracite UPVC windows and a fridge doors thinks they're taste is unique and better than traditional

I work in sales and letting sand this is my opinion

What you gonna do about it🖐️

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 14/08/2023 13:14

Not my cup of tea, but the long handle does at least look practical and easy to use. The floor height letterbox on the other hand is pretty evil. When my cat went AWOL I leafleted the immediate area, and even just delivering once to a few streets left me cursing them. Posties must loathe them.

I think you just don't understand the word 'unique' that's all. The rest of what you're saying is perfectly reasonable, including your opinion that the people who do it consider their taste better than 'traditional' (as do pretty much everyone who has ever redecorated or rennovated anything since the dawn of time). But your use of the word 'unique' is just incorrect.

MrsMitford3 · 14/08/2023 13:16

I think they are awful and make me realise how much a cheap looking front door cheapens the whole look of the house.

They often look plastic-y. I live in an area full of period houses and there is one of those doors-so jarring and ugly

Spaghettine · 14/08/2023 13:18

@BloodyPrime 🖐️🖐️

I do understand. As I said, I work in this area. In my OPINION putting on features like that is because you think your house looks better. You think your taste is unique

CatsOnTheChair · 14/08/2023 13:18

They are usually slam lock doors with the long bars. So, along with being the new trend, they are more secure, as you can't forget to lock the door - you can also easily lock yourself out!

5foot5 · 14/08/2023 13:21

We are in the market for a new front door and will probably choose something uPVC to replace the existing, very draughty, wooden door.

I don't actually dislike the colour of those doors but the handle looks really weird and I would feel guilty about the postman having to stoop to deliver mail. I would also worry someone could put their hand through that letter box and nick the mail.

TheYadaYada · 14/08/2023 13:23

Me too! They are so naff.

Porridgeislife · 14/08/2023 13:24

They’re not my cup of tea but I’ve never understood frothing over other people’s design choices. Unless you’re living there, or it’s a conservation zone, what harm is done?

What?

Are you feeling quite yourself today?

Anyhow, black/very dark can be a better choice for somebody with eyesight issues when against a light background or bright room - there's a reason why grab bars, rails and toilet seats in accessible bathrooms tend to be darkest blue.

Yet again showing that you do not know the meaning of the word unique.

I'm with you! Ever since I first saw them I've always thought those big long bars look out of place whatever property they're on. And the low level letter boxes must be terrible for posties.

floribunda18 · 14/08/2023 13:29

Still better than white uPVC front doors though.

DustyLee123 · 14/08/2023 13:29

I also feel sorry for posties, they shouldn’t have to bend down to deliver the post.
