To hate those new front doors with the big bar?

Slowly lots of neighbours seem to be replacing their perfectly nice front door with grey ones with a big bar as a handle and a letter box at floor level.

I don’t know why but they make me irrationally annoyed!

I love them! I want one for my house! I do have a new build though and I'm sure people will tell me I have no taste (I don't really!).

Yes agree - I have helped DC with leaflet and also newspaper delivery and a floor-level letterbox is the worst.

The best thing tbh is a separate mailbox - on the wall or even on the gatepost.

Have said I don’t think they should be allowed but also I think their purpose is to deter leafleters

sqirrelfriends · 14/08/2023 14:06

I don’t like the look of them but mostly feel sorry for the poor posties.

I would expect my Mail to started arriving looking a lot messier.

MyGirlDaisy · 14/08/2023 14:07

I don’t like them either - they do remind me of public toilet doors. But I have an original wooden door on my house- beautiful (imho) but not very practical (tiny little letterbox) and draughty as heck in winter. Can’t bring myself to change it though!

Apollonia1 · 14/08/2023 14:08

I like those doors with the long bar - looks contemporary.

I'm in Ireland, and in 2001, government regulations were introduced banning the use of low-level letter boxes in the front doors of all new homes. This doesn't apply to existing doors.

Clarabe1 · 14/08/2023 14:08

There is or I should say was a gorgeous 1930s large semi near me. It used to have the original stained glass windows and doors and fair enough they might have need replacing but some unimaginative bastard has fitted grey windows and a grey door with the big bar on it. The rage I felt was irrational.

It's the same around our way too. Not necessarily grey but the long bar like handle which looks jail like. Plus the letter box right at floor level must be really frustrating for posties.

I used to deliver newspapers when I was at school, and floor level, tiny letterboxes were a PITA.

LolaSmiles · 14/08/2023 14:10

And yet everyone with a grey rendered house, black windows, resin driveway and fridge front door thinks they're unique, with more modern taste
It's not a look I like, but I doubt they think they're unique. The light grey/off white rendered house, black windows and doors look has been growing in popularity for a few years.

At some point it will end up looking dated like the funny columns either side of some new builds that was in fashion a while ago, often accompanied with descriptions of its kerb appeal.

RubiRage · 14/08/2023 14:10

What’s yours like OP?

TheCyclingGorilla · 14/08/2023 14:11

Postal workers hate them with a passion.

Not sure why what doors your neighbours choose is annoying you.

So in my opinion - YABU!

Allhailkingcharlie · 14/08/2023 14:16

I don't like them either. I really have no interest in front doors. But can't help thinking that they won't age well and everyone will know they're old? I don't understand the massive handle?! I don't like the grey doors or windows. Maybe I do have an interest in doors... 😂

phobiaofsocialmedia · 14/08/2023 14:16

I have one.

I am a terrible person who is a sheeple and I think I'm unique.

jackstini · 14/08/2023 14:16

I've had mine 12 years so not a new thing by any means; my house is pretty modern though - I agree they don't look great on a Victorian terrace

I do love how easy it is for anyone of any height to use, including toddlers (who is now 14!) and wheelchair users

Separate post box for me in the wall

I have large lit up numbers too (although not in glass!) Delivery drivers often mention them and thank me - especially takeaways on dark rainy nights!

Allhailkingcharlie · 14/08/2023 14:18

Also, surely letterboxes at the very bottom of the door is a theft risk? So being able to put your hand through and get letters back out?

JanieEyre · 14/08/2023 14:20

I quite like the design but would want a more cheerful colour. Certainly I wouldn't have the post flap at the bottom of the door, I think that's just inconsiderate.

Oh crap someone left the keys on the outside of the door 🤦🏻

Do you also drive a German car? This is important for the sheeple scale. 😁

I really dislike huge door numbers imprinted in glass above new doors too, quite a few of these on big houses near me.

As someone doing community visits - I BLOODY LOVE THEM!!!!

BRING DOOR NUMBERS BACK! ALL THE DOOR NUMBERS!!! I am so sick of having to drive up and down a street to find a door that has a number on and then counting up and down in 2s to get to the house I'm due to visit!

We've got the door number glass etching thing - it's an otherwise dead space where the window fits above the door, so it's useful to have in there. We don't have the office door bar thing - we've got a door knocker (ignored by all delivery staff who just bang on the window... as is the bell) and a letterbox mounted to the wall next to the door. Fits the age of the building well enough - uber modern would look daft with the age of the house.

You said it yourself, so🤷‍♀️

thenightsky · 14/08/2023 14:38

When we replaced our front door a few months ago, we consulted our regular postie on what worked best. Middle of the door she said, traditional style.

PaterPower · 14/08/2023 14:39

Slightly off topic, but I thought the Royal Mail was trying to get ground level letter flaps banned?

They’re bloody awful for the posties who have to bend to deliver stuff through them.

TeenLifeMum · 14/08/2023 14:40

Letter box at the bottom feels like you’re sticking your middle fingers up at the postman

TooOldForThisNonsense · 14/08/2023 14:41

I don’t mind the bar but I hate the low level letterboxes. The poor posties’ backs

ClafoutisSurprise · 14/08/2023 14:41

Seasidechippylover · 14/08/2023 13:47

Why does everyone get so het up about other people's design choices 🤣

When it comes to exteriors, because we have to look at it. Would I prefer to walk down a street lined with trees, where all the front gardens have plants and flowers and where the houses are easy on the eye, or somewhere where there are few growing things and the properties have features I find ugly?

I always wonder if these towns that get absolutely overrun with tourists taking photos would attract so much attention if most of our built environment was more attractive.

My own pet hate is plastic wood-effect cladding and fences. I bet it’s not cheap either.
