To hate those new front doors with the big bar?

Slowly lots of neighbours seem to be replacing their perfectly nice front door with grey ones with a big bar as a handle and a letter box at floor level.

I don’t know why but they make me irrationally annoyed!

I dislike about 90% of doors in our neighbourhood. I don't want my doors to have character. I quite like that look!

IMustDoMoreExercise · 14/08/2023 14:43

I feel sorry for the postmen/women who have to keep bending down.

FarmGirl78 · 14/08/2023 14:43

Most of them are slam locks aren't they? You shut the door behind you and its locked. They just don't feel very secure. Next door have one, and their Daughter locks herself out about once a month so I have a key at mine to let her back in. I've noticed when leaving theirs is doesn't seem very sure of itself. Few weeks later Daughter again for home from school and realised she didn't have her key and when she rang me I was out. I suggested she just try giving it a good shove, and lo and behold she pushed hard enough and it just opened. 🤣🤣 I don't know who was more surprised.

I always feel sorry for the posties. Job not hard enough? Kneel whilst you deliver my mail.

Yes, there should be rules that if the post box in below a certain height then you have to have an external one as well.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 14/08/2023 14:45

YANBU, they look like office doors to me.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 14/08/2023 14:45

Nothing is as bad as fake grass though. Absolutely disgusting

UndercoverCop · 14/08/2023 14:45

These are popping up here too, lots of lovely Edwardian and Victorian houses with bizarre modern office doors.
I also hate the fact ours has render on the front (side and back are brick) but it was like that when we moved in and when I looked into getting it removed it was incredibly expensive for aesthetics

UndercoverCop · 14/08/2023 14:46

@TooOldForThisNonsense outdoor dog pee carpets 🤢

SomewhereWithSomeone · 14/08/2023 14:46

I quite like them in grey.😅

Our front door is huge, it has the bar handle that so many seem to hate. No glass, no letterbox and not grey though.

I have one.

I am a terrible person who is a sheeple and I think I'm unique.

Don't you care about the posties having to bend down?

JackyinaTracky · 14/08/2023 14:47

There is a house near me that has double doors like this, I always think it looks like a strip club.
not my cup of tea…

Spottyhousecoat · 14/08/2023 14:49

I hate these too a couple of my neighbours have them they really don't suit the house styles, they look like entrances to big blocks of flats! Buzz me in!

When my previous neighbours put their fancy new door on (well, he did) their kids who were young teenagers couldn't manage the fancypants bloody lock. They'd get back from school and have their keys but be out there for ages trying to get in. If any of us were home we'd let them round the back and they climbed over the wall and went through the dog flap.

Otherwise they waited till 6pm.

Buy yeah, I reckon an adult could have shouldered or booted it in if they'd wanted to.

Poor kids.

TheMousePipes · 14/08/2023 14:51

They’re bloody awful. We live on an inter war estate and they’re SO out of keeping with the surrounding houses. Don’t even get me started on the grey windows…

Skodacool · 14/08/2023 14:52

Royal Mail have advised that people shouldn’t have those low down letterboxes. I know what hard work they are, I worked on the Christmas post many years ago.

AutumnCrow · 14/08/2023 14:53

I really hope that Royal Mail bans delivery to low down letter boxes. People can mount a post box on the wall. Twats.

Anonymouslyposting · 14/08/2023 14:54

I don’t have one - but I like them! I think it depends on the house, on a modern house = great, stuck on an otherwise old/period house = weird.

I do think the low letterbox is unfair on the postman though and agree with previous posters, if you go for a door that can’t have a standard height letterbox then get a separate postbox.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 14/08/2023 14:55

I also hate them. It's an irrational hatred but I can't help it.

When the people who bought our previous house replaced the windows (Victorian semi), they installed lovely sash windows. Very in keeping with the age of the house. One of the neighbours thought they looked horrendous and couldn't understand why they'd chosen them.

This is similar to the the door Moaning Neighbour installed in their own house (Victorian terrace)...

Rewis · 14/08/2023 14:56

I really dislike post box on the door and wish we had a postbox on the wall. Where I grew up the postboxes were in rows for maybe 10 houses and we'd pick it up so postie needed to make less stops. I also prefer slam locks, can't be asked to faff with the key 😅

There are people who don't... like... sash windows? 🤯

Deathraystare · 14/08/2023 14:58

Never seen them before (don't get around much clearly) but no, ugh. Seems a bit weird somehow.

Wolfparty · 14/08/2023 14:59

I didn't know I had an opinion on front doors but I do think these are ugly. Don't think there are any on my road which is all victorian semis but I will keep an eye out.

I agree this is very weird.

Nevermind31 · 14/08/2023 15:03

Personally I can’t stand those white plastic doors… or small windows, especially when only a small part opens.
Or those doors with a stained glass window… but each to their own

CecilyP · 14/08/2023 15:05

Posties must loathe them.

Posties loathe low letter boxes when they first became popular in the 1970s. It’s hard to believe that anyone would think that’s a sensible place for a letter box 50 years on.
