to think it isn't greedy to eat a whole fish, portion of chips and mushy peas with bread and butter?

Opinions vary wildly in our family; DH and DS2 will happily eat a large portion of chips with a fish, or a pie and a fishcake, or a fishcake and a jumbo battered sausage. I will eat a fishcake and 2/3 of a portion of chips, but I like bread and butter to make chip butties as well. In-laws think we are all insanely greedy and will split a small fish between them and a handful of chips each. If they have mushy peas, they will eat commensurately fewer chips because peas are incredibly filling.

What's your chippy order? And do you think a portion of chips is designed to be shared, or is an expected portion for one person?

I always side eye people who call others greedy just for finishing everything they are eating. It’s so rude! Most likely these rude people also complain about all food waste in the world too I bet.

I can very easily polish off a chippy tea. I have steak and kidney pudding (pick the kidney out of course), chips, peas and gravy - and I eat it ALL ❤️😊. Better in my belly than in the bin. It’s my ultimate comfort food and I won’t leave a single chip. Yes someone close to me was shocked I can eat it all. Didn’t outright call me greedy but the tone of voice was one of complete disbelief/disgust.

I once got told I’m greedy for having a meal in Burger King, rather than just a burger on its own. But… I wanted my chips and drink too 😯. To this day I’m still baffled by that comment.

I can be very greedy- I can smash a packet of Jaffa cakes in one go.
That IS greedy.

Yeah but you have to tho. One or two jaffa cakes isn't enough. 🤷‍♀️

Lemonyfuckit · 11/08/2023 19:39

It totally depends on portion sizes! (as well as your relative size and activity levels and hunger plus I think people's appetites decrease as they get older, logically if they're less active).

Our local chippy: one portion of fish is enormous (ie approaching 30cm long) and a portion of chips equally huge. The first time we got a fish and a portion of chips each. The second time we got a fish each and one (large) chips to share, it was still too much, we've come to the conclusion we need one portion of fish and chips between the two of us. And I swear I'm not a MN competitive under eater!

Seems perfectly normal that eg a teenage boy would have a larger appetite than his grandparents, so all seems fine albeit obviously irritating if they're pointing out how 'greedy' you all are.

They do! MIL is the sort of person who serves steak for the men and salmon for the women, and will performatively leave salad because she's "full" after a couple of bits of cucumber and a new potato. She thinks I eat like a man and it's unnattractive.

My partner always comments about women like this. He says the women look skinny and would never eat what their husband eats and the husband looks big and ready for a heart attack. He always comments on the fact there is more women than men in care homes he says they've wiped them out😂

For an Indian takeaway, we’ll always order two main portions, rice (or we’ll make some decent Basmati at home if we’re feeling tight) and order a few sides. It easily lasts two days including a snack for lunch. Curry often tastes just as good/better the following day, we do love an Indian.

Yeah if we can't decide and end up ordering 2 different curries it'll last us 2 days.

Why, though? What's greedy about a packet of Jaffa cakes?

It might be excessive, it might not be how you'd prefer to act, but why does it require a moral judgment?

Lemonyfuckit · 11/08/2023 19:41

Ps after reading this thread I'd kill for fish chips and mushy peas right now. We are actually having scampi chips and peas for dinner which is good, but they're oven chips not chippy chips and normal peas are not as good as mushy peas.

Georgyporky · 11/08/2023 19:41

I went to a chippie in the Lake District some years ago. The menu said fish. I asked the server what fish was it. She asked the cook - who looked puzzled and said "fish".
OK. The "bread & butter" that accompanied it (unasked for, but part of the deal) was a nasty grease - not butter.

To wade in on the scallop issue. The pronunciation is different (in these parts anyway 😉).

Scallop - fishy creature.

Scollop - deep fried potato.

Emmelina · 11/08/2023 19:43

If we’re having a chippy tea, we eat heartily. It’s a treat, maybe once a month! The kids used to share a large chips between the three of them but can’t get away with it now (teen and two tweens=bottomless pits!)

Arniesleftleg · 11/08/2023 19:44

Half a piece of battered cod and a few chips. Maybe a bit of curry sauce.

Viviennemary · 11/08/2023 19:44

I dont like fish and chips much or mushy peas. But if I did I would eat as much as I wanted so go ahead.

Carpediemmakeitcount · 11/08/2023 19:44

For dinner tonight we are having steak, chips, scampi, onion rings and salad with coleslaw. If we die we die together.

I couldn't but DS definitely could - just depends on the person. I find fish and chips a bit much. I can eat quite a lot of chinese food though! People my parents age seem to be almost competitive in how little they can eat (and how thin they are). Its a generational thing.

Lol at the competitive under eating. I recently said same of my parents. Personally I think the quantity of chips from fish and chip shops ludicrous. We have a fish each and split a small portion of chips. I’d never judge someone eating more or less

Wenfy · 11/08/2023 19:46

We eat loads normally (DH and DD can eat an entire large pizza to themselves) but we always split a large fish and chips between the 4 of us. It’s not something any of us can eat a great deal of.

Carpediemmakeitcount · 11/08/2023 19:48

I do struggle with takeaway fish and chips because of all the grease and it fills me quickly. I do prefer to cook fish and chips at home myself less grease.

AliTheMinx · 11/08/2023 19:50

We have quite big appetites, but we share a large portion of chips between 3 of us, and then each have something with it - pie, sausage, fish, etc. This is always more than enough for us.

My parents have teeny appetites and struggle with a normal fish and chips shared between them! I think it's a generational thing, as they've never had big portions.

The idea of bread and butter with chips is so weird!

Greensleeves · 11/08/2023 18:12

Does it need to matter?! I'm curious. Go through Active Convos and weed out everything that "doesn't matter"...see how much is left Confused

You tell em! I detest these snippy answers designed to derail conversation...

In answer to YOUR question, it depends how good the chips are but DH and I would prob share a large portion but have our own fish. I'm not one for mushy peas but curry sauce is the business!

JANEY205 · 11/08/2023 19:52

. As you asked, you eat more compared to my family, but everyone is different. We wouldn’t eat bread with a main meal 😂 but doesn’t mean we win a prize! We usually split a medium fish and chips between two adults and a toddler. Sometimes will add a battered sausage and that is more than enough. My uni boyfriend used to eat bread with every meal and had a huge bread/beer belly by 19 🤣 He used to say it was hereditary but they all ate half a loaf of bread with their meals in his family. Bread destroys me unless it’s good quality sourdough and so I don’t see the appeal, sorry OP!

FrancisSeaton · 11/08/2023 19:54

Smartiepants79 · 11/08/2023 18:12

Well, I can get through about a half a portion of chips alongside my fish with no extras.
To me it would be way too much food.
But I’m not you or a full grown man who would be twice the size of me.

Ahahahaha peak Mumsnet
That's greedy as fuck tbf- I divide it into 7 and eat it for my lunches every day at work

DrCoconut · 11/08/2023 19:54

The thing that really pisses me off confuses me is chip shops that offer gluten free batter and then cook the item in with everything else 🤯. I am restricted to just one chip shop in our town due to this and they close early so no good for a late night snack. At least they are there though, I had about 18 months without a chippy before they opened.

IpsyUpsyDaisyDoos · 11/08/2023 19:56

My DH doesn't like fish but we do a fish (me), portion of chicken (him) and a small chips between us (because our chippies "small" is huge by even my greedy standards). I have bread and butter too, you need a chip butty!! Even worse, it has to be white bread!

Little one has a bit of everything or fish fingers depending on how she feels or what she's eaten through the day.

Arrgghhdecisions · 11/08/2023 19:57

Small fish, chips, peas, bread and butter. And as I'm from the Midlands originally, a pineapple fritter. Not that they exist in Yorkshire 😭

Ohhmydays · 11/08/2023 20:00

Just had a chippy. Dp gets large fish supper(2 bits fish) i get sausage supper and split between the 2 wee ones, so i have 1 sausage and half chips. 2ds will have half a sausgae each n split other half of chips between them. Dp will eat the left overs. If oldest ds is in he will have a supper to himself with cheese on the chips
