to think it isn't greedy to eat a whole fish, portion of chips and mushy peas with bread and butter?

Opinions vary wildly in our family; DH and DS2 will happily eat a large portion of chips with a fish, or a pie and a fishcake, or a fishcake and a jumbo battered sausage. I will eat a fishcake and 2/3 of a portion of chips, but I like bread and butter to make chip butties as well. In-laws think we are all insanely greedy and will split a small fish between them and a handful of chips each. If they have mushy peas, they will eat commensurately fewer chips because peas are incredibly filling.

What's your chippy order? And do you think a portion of chips is designed to be shared, or is an expected portion for one person?

Depends on the chip shop. Our local a portion of chips is easily enough for two people with a portion of fish each.
Go to my parents local chippy and two fish and a portion of chips is enough for 4. The fish literally barely fits on the plate and they give so many chips. It's also very expensive at this chippy so rarely go there.

Titsywoo · 11/08/2023 20:03

It also depends on your local chippy. A small portion of chips at ours covers a large dinner plate and is piled pretty high - most people couldn't eat all that and a large piece of fish. Some places I have been have more normal sized portions.

JudgeJ · 11/08/2023 20:03

Thye chippy I use gives massive portions of chips so if I'm on my own the surplus go in the fridge and are air-fried as needed, makes them lovely and crisp.

PonkyPonky · 11/08/2023 20:04

You should try my local chippy. The chips have some kind of infinite portion spell cast over them. One portion NEVER runs out. I live with a bunch of gannets who could each eat 2 adult portions of anything but the chippy portions are the one thing that defeats them. We’ve never eaten every single chip, no matter how many people are at the table!

PurpleChrayne · 11/08/2023 20:04

Half rice, half chips, and curry sauce for me.

6WeekCountdown · 11/08/2023 20:08

Eat what you like 🤷‍♀️, if you are fat then yes you are eating too much, if you are slim it's clearly a treat and done in moderation. We are slim and will have chippy once every couple of months probably not even that it isn't my favourite fatty meal, we have a normal portion each, fish, chips and mushy peas, I'll leave some if full.

You don't specify if you are a bunch of fatties so it's hard to comment.

No just a judgemental one, I know which one I’d rather be friends with though..

mandlerparr · 11/08/2023 20:17

I would just start not eating at all when you go out with them. Seriously, eat something before you go out and only have water. When she comments, tell her that you have decided to become a breatharian. okay, that may be too much.
She obviously has issues with food. don't let her issues become yours. maybe if she comments your husband can remind her that it is rude to comment on the eating habits of other people. Or tell her yourself. Or say, "no one else, including doctors have a problem with our diet, why is it you do?"

FrancisSeaton · 11/08/2023 20:19

@6WeekCountdown you're not a fat dipstick you are just the mother in law 😂

ReadingSoManyThreads · 11/08/2023 20:26

I can't eat a full portion of fish and chips, I'd order a small portion of fish and chips and just about manage to finish it if I'm really hungry. Yet other foods, I'd eat large portions of no problem like Chinese or Indian. There's something about deep fried food that I struggle to eat much of it. My mum eats small portions and would have a fish but just a handful of chips.

My husband could eat a large fish & chips, no idea how, he's skinny as a rake!

People have different appetites. Don't sweat it!

SocksAndTheCity · 11/08/2023 20:40

Has anybody mentioned pizza crunch yet? 😊

DarkPsy · 11/08/2023 20:41

Ten years ago I could put away a large fish and chips by myself, no problem. My body would punish me for it now.

Cowlover89 · 11/08/2023 20:48

AliTheMinx · 11/08/2023 19:50

We have quite big appetites, but we share a large portion of chips between 3 of us, and then each have something with it - pie, sausage, fish, etc. This is always more than enough for us.

My parents have teeny appetites and struggle with a normal fish and chips shared between them! I think it's a generational thing, as they've never had big portions.

The idea of bread and butter with chips is so weird!

Chip butties are the best!

CNDflag · 11/08/2023 20:49

I'd personally go for a Massive Salad honestly.

Curseofthenation · 11/08/2023 20:54

Smartiepants79 · 11/08/2023 18:12

Well, I can get through about a half a portion of chips alongside my fish with no extras.
To me it would be way too much food.
But I’m not you or a full grown man who would be twice the size of me.

I'm the same. DH is a 6ft man and we both have a portion of fish each and share a large chips. Older people often have smaller appetities though, I find at least.

MissTrip82 · 11/08/2023 21:05

I’m vegetarian so I don’t know, but there’s nothing wrong with being greedy sometimes. Food is for nutrition AND pleasure.

I did like the poster who linked food portions to sex by bizarrely claiming men are ‘twice her size’ , another Borrower I assume.

Threenow · 11/08/2023 21:06

Surely it depends on where you are getting it from? I have one fish, or curry & rice roll, but only half a scoop of chips from one place, but would probably get a whole scoop from another place as they have smaller scoops. Mushy peas aren't a thing here, or curry sauce, but a chip butty always goes down well Smile

Your MIL sounds like she should be on MN - she could discuss massive salads to her heart's content!

Oneweektogo2023 · 11/08/2023 21:08

2 lightly battered haddock (one each) and we share a large chips, peas and gravy between 2.

Shewolf359 · 11/08/2023 21:17

Me, dh and ds can smash this, no problem

to think it isn't greedy to eat a whole fish, portion of chips and mushy peas with bread and butter?
RubiRage · 11/08/2023 21:22

I used to be able to eat more than most, but sadly I get bloated now & I feel full very quickly. If I said you were greedy it’s because I’m jealous that my meals with B&B are well & truly over.

SadCelticBunny · 11/08/2023 21:24

The chippie in the next village along serves ENORMOUS portions of chips.
Our neighbours, who are friends too, get large chips and there are two adults and two children.
They come to us, two adults and we have some too.
Last time there was enough to take to our next door neighbours, adult male and teenage male!
Seriously, I don't know how they do it.
Or why to be truthful.
It's always quite the event!

Allywill · 11/08/2023 21:28

I’ve just clicked on this as it’s exactly what I have just eaten. Chippy tea I have been looking forward to all day. Also had a can of fizzy vimto. Probably over 6 months maybe even 12 since I last had one if that even matters.
