to think it isn't greedy to eat a whole fish, portion of chips and mushy peas with bread and butter?

Opinions vary wildly in our family; DH and DS2 will happily eat a large portion of chips with a fish, or a pie and a fishcake, or a fishcake and a jumbo battered sausage. I will eat a fishcake and 2/3 of a portion of chips, but I like bread and butter to make chip butties as well. In-laws think we are all insanely greedy and will split a small fish between them and a handful of chips each. If they have mushy peas, they will eat commensurately fewer chips because peas are incredibly filling.

What's your chippy order? And do you think a portion of chips is designed to be shared, or is an expected portion for one person?

Does it matter? Just eat what you want

Smartiepants79 · 11/08/2023 18:12

Well, I can get through about a half a portion of chips alongside my fish with no extras.
To me it would be way too much food.
But I’m not you or a full grown man who would be twice the size of me.

Greensleeves · 11/08/2023 18:12

Does it need to matter?! I'm curious. Go through Active Convos and weed out everything that "doesn't matter"...see how much is left Confused

I’d need curry sauce with that too, and a mug of tea to wash it down.
What’s for pudding ?

StopStartStop · 11/08/2023 18:13

Fish, chips and peas, with bread if you like and tea - great, but not every day!

Titsywoo · 11/08/2023 18:13

I couldn't but DS definitely could - just depends on the person. I find fish and chips a bit much. I can eat quite a lot of chinese food though! People my parents age seem to be almost competitive in how little they can eat (and how thin they are). Its a generational thing.

WhateverMate · 11/08/2023 18:13

God why must people start these threads, so everyone else piles in and takes the piss out of 'greedy' people or those who have small appetites?

Just eat what you want, it's your body and it's only greedy if you're taking more than your fair and leaving others short.

Thelonelygiraffe · 11/08/2023 18:14

A medium portion from our local chippy will feed three people, including h and our teen dd!!!!

Hoppinggreen · 11/08/2023 18:14

We get 1 fish each but I chips is easily enough for 3. Sauces are per person as we all like different ones

cheapskatemum · 11/08/2023 18:15

Just off to get fish & chip supper for me & DS1's girlfriend. I'll be getting 2 x cod, 2 x mushy peas & we'll share a portion of chips. Yum!

irrationallypink · 11/08/2023 18:15

Eat what you want, food is fuel. So long as you’re not binge eating and having 7 huge meals a day I think have however big a portion you want for your main meal, it’s no one’s business

SomewhereWithSomeone · 11/08/2023 18:15

They comment on what you eat and call you greedy? Tell them to mind their own fucking business. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Soubriquet · 11/08/2023 18:15

I have battered sausage, chips, curry sauce and mushy peas but I don’t eat the entire portion of chips. To be fair, we do get very large portions so it’s usually split between me and one of the kids

Thebigblueballoon · 11/08/2023 18:15

We each get a fish (me small, him large), share a portion of chips and add a portion of mushy peas. And a guilty pleasure pot of curry sauce for me. Leaves me very full. Might add a slice of bread and butter each if super hungry.

CarolDunne · 11/08/2023 18:15

A medium chip with do me husband and preteen

WhatWouldJeevesDo · 11/08/2023 18:15

Fish can take a while to fry so I have sausage and chips while I’m waiting for my fish and chips.

TheGoogleMum · 11/08/2023 18:15

I usually get a mini fish and chips (and curry sauce) to myself. I wouldn't order less for peas. Chips are a bit weird I could probably share and be satisfied but I also could probably eat them all!

Sussurations · 11/08/2023 18:16

I always thought bread & butter with fish & chips/fish supper was a regional thing, not a greed thing - personally I like it but it is filling.

I like a helping of chips to myself but I don’t always eat it all. And have a bit off the end of DH’s fish. and a pineapple fritter (yum).

A fishcake, chips, mushy peas, bread & butter isn’t greedy in my opinion.

My ILs are elderly and share a helping of fish & chips but would never accuse us of greed! I like to drink tea with mine though, and I suspect they think it’s very common of me 😆

Theyrethreetheyresixtheyreninetheyreeight · 11/08/2023 18:16

Strapping 6ft Teen, DH & myself will have a large portion between us but our own small fish/burger/pie or whatever. We always have curry sauce, we don’t often have bread and butter. That all costs a fortune as it is, if we had large chips each the bill would be £££!

I guess it depends on how generous your chippy is. Ours seems to give us loads of chips and some always end up in the bin. I now want chippy chips even though I’ve had my dinner!

PurpleSteak · 11/08/2023 18:16

I can finish a whole portion but I've plenty if I share one. I'd struggle with bread too.

I wouldn't judge anyone as greedy but eating a whole portion on a regular basis would make most people very fat!

I'm not sure about the sausage/pie/fishcake combinations. That seems like 2 meals to me.

They do! MIL is the sort of person who serves steak for the men and salmon for the women, and will performatively leave salad because she's "full" after a couple of bits of cucumber and a new potato. She thinks I eat like a man and it's unnattractive.

I'll peel off the batter and nibble a cod mini fillet and usually a whole portion of chips with a pickled onion 😄 I love chip butty but that's a whole meal on its own

AdoraBell · 11/08/2023 18:18

I can never finish a portion of fish and chips. The fish yes but usually only half of the chips.

notsurewherenotsurewhy · 11/08/2023 18:18

I'm vegan so only eat the chips 😂 I can't finish a whole (small) portion, me and medium-sized kids get two between us.

I do find chips weirdly filling though, and otherwise have a hearty appetite (do a lot of exercise and have an active daily life). I'm sure the calories I'd have in a takeaway pizza hugely exceed the calories I'd have in chips.

I dislike people commenting on the portion sizes of others. It's a very standard family judgment thing though I think!

LauraNorda · 11/08/2023 18:18

If you clear your plate, it's not greedy. If you pile your plate high, depriving someone else the chance of the food and do not eat it all, it's greedy.
