to think it isn't greedy to eat a whole fish, portion of chips and mushy peas with bread and butter?

Opinions vary wildly in our family; DH and DS2 will happily eat a large portion of chips with a fish, or a pie and a fishcake, or a fishcake and a jumbo battered sausage. I will eat a fishcake and 2/3 of a portion of chips, but I like bread and butter to make chip butties as well. In-laws think we are all insanely greedy and will split a small fish between them and a handful of chips each. If they have mushy peas, they will eat commensurately fewer chips because peas are incredibly filling.

What's your chippy order? And do you think a portion of chips is designed to be shared, or is an expected portion for one person?

Surely if you’re hungry a treat meal of fish and chips to yourself is fine?

Do these people get fish and chips between them at the seaside and take it in turns to grab a forkful from the cardboard tray? If they eat in a fish and chip restaurant do they get one meal to share? Surely the portions are designed to be eaten by one person.

I can usually eat a standard fish and chips with half a pot of curry or peas but I know some places are more generous and if we know that in advance we might get a portion of chips to share from the takeaway. If I’m not as hungry as normal I might even get a small fish but I don’t consider anyone else greedy for ordering fish and chips with a side and a bit of bread and butter.

God my parents were obsessed by how little food they ate. Stuff em eat what you want

Lindyloomillion1 · 13/08/2023 16:15

I love this kind of post. Comes as a relief after all those terrible holidays!
I will order a fish (battered cod usually) but pick off some of the batter if it's a bit greasy, plus a vat of tom ketchup for dipping. I can eat about 3/4 portion of chips bathed in vinegar before I run out of steam. Don't like mushy pies but would have a fat gherkin if they're on the counter. Yum! Making me peckish!

Fifthtimelucky · 13/08/2023 18:11

We have one portion of fish each and share chips. If there are two of us we share one small portion of chips. If there are three of us we share one large portion.

I don't imagine chip shops serve standard sizes though so what is small to mine might be large to someone else's.

Definitely wouldn't want bread and butter with it as well!

cheapskatemum · 13/08/2023 18:23

I had to train myself to like mushy peas, otherwise there was no veg portion. I’d be happy to include a pickled onion in addition.

BHRK · 13/08/2023 18:37

Your portions sound huge to me

A medium portion from our local chippy will feed three people, including h and our teen dd!!!!

Massive salads are popular too in your house?

We would get fish and chips to share at the seaside, yes, or DS would get calamari if available or a pie and I would get fish, with one serve of chips to share. DS normally eats like a typical teenage boy but isn't that keen on fish or chips.

I think the portions are suitable as either one large portion for a large active person, or just as suitable between two people.

And chickens last 7 days! For three meals a day!

A medium from my local would feed three adults here too (chips, not fish).

Because shocker - different chippys serve vastly different sized portions, and not all adults have the same appetite.

MrsO3 · 13/08/2023 18:51

No you’re not greedy. Everyone has different appetites. Just eat what you want to eat

Exactly. My local chippy scoops them straight into the paper and they’re enormous compared to all the pics posted here.
why must people be nobs?

ThinWomansBrain · 13/08/2023 18:55

YABU - mushy peas are vile.

I had a 'light lunch' serving of fish and chips last week, and actually enjoyed it tons more - chip shop portions are often huge, and I have no discipline about not eating it all🙄

Cornishclio · 13/08/2023 19:04

I get a child size portion of fish and chips from the chippy. The portion sizes are huge.

Hardly "nobbish" to point out what appears to be boastful portion controllers on MN. Ive had many chips (not overweight either before my body mass is questioned) in my lifetime but I've yet to find a chippy with a portion size that could feed 2 adults and a teen. They'd not make a profit!

If you don't think that statement is nobbish, what shall we call it?

Ignorant? Perhaps we should go with that given (again) people have vastly different appetites and chip shops serve vastly different sized portions.

Just because you've personally not been able to find one means nothing given that many other people have.

WhateverMate · 13/08/2023 19:11

Actually to assume 'boastful portion controllers' is nothing other than ignorant.

There's nothing boastful or controlling about naturally small appetites, plenty of people have them.

Just as plenty of people have naturally large appetites.

It's no big deal.

Riapia · 13/08/2023 19:23

I remove the batter and have it for lunch the next day.

No, @PlinkPlonkFizz ... 🙄 our chippy just does HUGE portions of chips. Bonkers.

Out of interest, why are mushy peas vile?

Awittyfool · 13/08/2023 23:29

I’ve never had mushy peas in my 50 years . The whole thing is a bit unappealing from the name Marrow Fat peas/ processed peas to the colour and sludge factor. I can’t think of anything else apart from tripe that scares me more.

Fish and chips are so expensive I do try and eat them all. I don’t see it as greed but as being grateful. Last had takeaway fish and chips just before Covid arrived so I’m no authority.

Relax @WhateverMate it's not the end of the world if one person thinks differently than you.

Draconis · 14/08/2023 00:14

I eat half a regular portion from our local. I'm not being competitive because I can eat big portions but those portions are massive and cost about £15.

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 14/08/2023 00:22

There’s outrage on our local Facebook village page because the new owners of the chip shop have “slashed” the portion size of a fish and chips. One man is actually outraged and trying to encourage a boycott…

Totally ignoring the fact that they’ve also cut the price of said fish and chips by £7!

They announced on their FB that they planned to do it, they’ve cut all the portion sizes (so a steak pie and chips is now 1 pie and a smaller chips instead of 2, battered mushrooms are now 5 big mushrooms instead of 10 etc) to make the prices more affordable for people living alone - which there are a lot of here because we have a lot of pensioners locally.

It’s a bloody good thing. But no, Billy Whinger doesn’t like change 🙄
