to think it isn't greedy to eat a whole fish, portion of chips and mushy peas with bread and butter?

Opinions vary wildly in our family; DH and DS2 will happily eat a large portion of chips with a fish, or a pie and a fishcake, or a fishcake and a jumbo battered sausage. I will eat a fishcake and 2/3 of a portion of chips, but I like bread and butter to make chip butties as well. In-laws think we are all insanely greedy and will split a small fish between them and a handful of chips each. If they have mushy peas, they will eat commensurately fewer chips because peas are incredibly filling.

What's your chippy order? And do you think a portion of chips is designed to be shared, or is an expected portion for one person?

Oh and the rip off merchants have also chatted the potato scallop/fritters from 5 for £3 to 65p each…

I mean they’re going to be living in luxury based on that price increase 😂

Its one of the best things I’ve ever seen on Facebook

*changed not chatted

There’s outrage on our local Facebook village page because the new owners of the chip shop have “slashed” the portion size of a fish and chips. One man is actually outraged and trying to encourage a boycott…

Totally ignoring the fact that they’ve also cut the price of said fish and chips by £7!

They announced on their FB that they planned to do it, they’ve cut all the portion sizes (so a steak pie and chips is now 1 pie and a smaller chips instead of 2, battered mushrooms are now 5 big mushrooms instead of 10 etc) to make the prices more affordable for people living alone - which there are a lot of here because we have a lot of pensioners locally.

It’s a bloody good thing. But no, Billy Whinger doesn’t like change 🙄

Discusting. Pie and chips only including one pie. Whatever next?

I hope it works out for them. I did always wonder why it was effectively not possible to buy a takeaway for one person because the minimum serving size was for two, but assumed that it wasn't worth their while having people spend smaller amounts of money but needs must and all that.

@YetMoreNewBeginnings hang on a minute…BATTERED MUSHROOMS??!

Yep. I’ve never seen them anywhere else.

TBh they’re actually quite nice. They’re big mushrooms, not little ones (does that make it better or worse? )

I hope it does as well.

I had a very rare night home alone last night and went to the chippy. Wouldn’t have done it with the old one as it was just too much and I don’t like the chips reheated.

The portion was still a very good portion with some leftover chips.

Me and DH have really big appetites, we are both quite active though. We would get a portion of chips each, curry sauce and a battered sausage.

When we get this meal with family, MIL will of course get a much smaller portion (fine,up to her) and then tut and sigh and mention how we eat so much and how she doesn’t understand how it’s possible.

Tbh it used to annoy me but now it spurs me on to make sure I eat every last bit and then dramatically say how I’m not even full and could do with more haha just so she knows it’s pointless to make such comments and isn’t deterring me or making me feel bad.

I don’t know what her intention is if it’s not to make me feel bad? To ensure we all know she only eats very little? Good for her?

Also, definitely assuming these are orange chips. Not a pasty poor relation 😂

We stayed in Tipton a few months ago, and as the AirBnB didn't have a working kitchen (being refurbished) we ordered fish and chips to be delivered.

We opened the package and just stared, thinking, "wtaf is this" 🤣 . We had to Google to make sure we're were not being poisoned. Never seen orange chips before. They were very nice though.

A small portion of chips is designed for one. A large for sharing

I remember my nanna she used to be 16 stone and as she got older she lost weight and went down to a size 8 and then she would always comment on my food intake. As people get older their appetites decrease and they forget how they ate when they were younger! She was right though as I was overweight and had weight loss surgery in the end but even with weight loss surgery although I couldn’t eat that full amount I don’t think it’s greedy at all and most people will eat that amount of food it’s normal :)

threatmatrix · 14/08/2023 13:48

You are not being greedy as long as you are not overweight.

I don’t see why but each to their own.

Clearly 17 pages worth of posters were quite happy to engage in chat with the OP about it…

No-one ever said every thread posted had to be a serious world problem
