to think it isn't greedy to eat a whole fish, portion of chips and mushy peas with bread and butter?

Opinions vary wildly in our family; DH and DS2 will happily eat a large portion of chips with a fish, or a pie and a fishcake, or a fishcake and a jumbo battered sausage. I will eat a fishcake and 2/3 of a portion of chips, but I like bread and butter to make chip butties as well. In-laws think we are all insanely greedy and will split a small fish between them and a handful of chips each. If they have mushy peas, they will eat commensurately fewer chips because peas are incredibly filling.

What's your chippy order? And do you think a portion of chips is designed to be shared, or is an expected portion for one person?

A large fish and chips with a sausage does me and DH (fish) DD (sausage) and split the chips between us with plenty left over. The portions at the local chippy are enormous, and I say that as a greedy sod who can eat pasta by the mountainful.

DH likes a piece of bread and butter for a chip butty and peas or curry sauce. I'm happy drowing it all with vinegar.

I can finish a whole portion but I've plenty if I share one. I'd struggle with bread too.

I wouldn't judge anyone as greedy but eating a whole portion on a regular basis would make most people very fat!

I'm not sure about the sausage/pie/fishcake combinations. That seems like 2 meals to me.

It is two meals.

motherofawhirlwind · 11/08/2023 18:19

Pie, battered jumbo sausage and chips or what ours calls a lunchbox - "small" fish (it's not), sausage and chips. Plus peas. Nom.

Bread and butter if we have white bread :)

Girasoli · 11/08/2023 18:19

From our local fish and chip shop DH and I always share a large cod and chips and mushy peas and that's plenty.

If we go somewhere touristy on the seafront on the other hand we'll get a normal cod and chips each as the portions are tiny.

Twillow · 11/08/2023 18:19

Honestly, depends how often you do it. It's expensive too...
We're not massive eaters and generally share a large fish and chips between 3 of us and can't see the attraction of bread and butter with a greasy meal personally, but I wouldn't dream of calling anyone greedy if they wanted more!

Hawkins009 · 11/08/2023 18:19

Usually I just have a regular chips at £3.20
On occasion I have it with either kebab meat, a battered sausage or potato fritter.
It's a mix then I usually do some bread and butter.

I'm vegan so only eat the chips 😂 I can't finish a whole (small) portion, me and medium-sized kids get two between us.

I do find chips weirdly filling though, and otherwise have a hearty appetite (do a lot of exercise and have an active daily life). I'm sure the calories I'd have in a takeaway pizza hugely exceed the calories I'd have in chips.

I dislike people commenting on the portion sizes of others. It's a very standard family judgment thing though I think!

You wouldn’t be able to eat the chips at my favourite chip shop. They are cooked in beef dripping

Does it need to matter?! I'm curious. Go through Active Convos and weed out everything that "doesn't matter"...see how much is left Confused

No, but why does it matter?!

Just eat what you want, i.e. whatever it takes to
fill you up. That will be different to what fills your ILs up.

And different to what fills each of us up.

Why ask what our ‘order’ is - it’s meaningless, in relation to you.

How long is a piece of string?

PickAChew · 11/08/2023 18:20

I'm having GF fish and chips, tonight. I'll eat all of it apart from the batter off the bottom and the chips that have stuck to the paper and gone a bit cold and rubbery.

Before I went GF, I ate very little of the batter because it made me feel sick and bloated. I never have mushy peas because they do even more immediately horrible things to me.

BlueBellsArePretty · 11/08/2023 18:20

For me I like a small fish supper, hubbie has a haggis supper and between us we'll polish off a portion of fritters all drowned in vinegar 🤤

They do! MIL is the sort of person who serves steak for the men and salmon for the women, and will performatively leave salad because she's "full" after a couple of bits of cucumber and a new potato. She thinks I eat like a man and it's unnattractive.

You're like two mushy peas in a pod then, criticising each other's eating habits.

Pot, kettle etc.

WhatAPalaverer · 11/08/2023 18:21

The portion sizes vary massively from shop to shop so you can’t compare!

bryceQ · 11/08/2023 18:21

I would never call someone insanely greedy.

Though I wouldn't eat a whole fish and chips to be honest, they don't do small near me, I usually get a large and share with DH. I find that's enough for us, because I have so much salt and vinegar on I'm usually a dehydrated mess by the end haha. Also because it's ridiculously expensive in London and i cant send £32 on fish and chips. It's just wrong!

Are chip shop chips vegan? Doesn't everything go in the same oil?

Niftyswiftie · 11/08/2023 18:22

I have a small piece of fish and small chips and usually leave half the chips. DH will eat a large piece of fish and a medium chips and finish it all.

CatsOnTheChair · 11/08/2023 18:22

DH is in the queue right now.
2 adults, one teen, one tween.
Order is 2 fish&chips, one battered sausage (large), one fish, and one tub of peas. The chips will be shared.

BingoBastards · 11/08/2023 18:23

@Greensleeves you made it sound like this was yet another judgemental thread about intake and weight.

OK no I wouldn't think anything of a large fish based supper and would think anyone was daft if they did.

I had scampi, chips and mushy peas, coffee 2 nights ago but couldn't eat most of the chips as my appetite is poor at present.

SalviaDivinorum · 11/08/2023 18:23

Our order is 2 small fish and one large portion of chips + two of mushy peas.

The chips we don't eat are two extra (small) portions which I put in the freezer for another day

Already said it but I’ll repeat. My favourite chip shop, cooks its chips in beef dripping. They are delicious

No, it seems to be a thread about her inlaws judging her food intake, while she judges her inlaw's food intake?

PuttingDownRoots · 11/08/2023 18:27

Everyone has different food needs and likes, plus portions vary.

DH insists the whole thing needs mushy peas.
DD1 prefers fish fingers with lots of chips.
DD2 just wants fish.
I like plenty of fish with a small amount of chips, and ketchup.

None of us are wrong!!

AngelAurora · 11/08/2023 18:28

Who cares? 🤷🏻‍♀️

MaybeSmaller · 11/08/2023 18:29

What's your chippy order? And do you think a portion of chips is designed to be shared, or is an expected portion for one person?

I tend to order cod (not "fish" because it might be something rank), chips and occasionally mushy peas.

Obviously a portion of chips (or portion of anything) is for one person, because otherwise what are you supposed to do if you are ordering just for yourself? Throw half of it away?!

Having bread and butter is fine too. Your in-laws are wronguns.

SomewhereWithSomeone · 11/08/2023 18:29

Oh god, definitely tell her to fuck off. And I’d spend less time with her. My mum was a competitive under eater, not very fit or healthy but as long as she was thin, all was ok. 🙄

She thought it was terrible that I ate so much, (I eat a normal amount) and that if I ate less I wouldn’t have to bother exercising....🙃

Anyway, you’re now going to get a thread full of competitive under eaters, who couldn’t possibly eat a full portion. You will probably get photos too to prove how large the portions are at their chip shop. 😂

Second fish and chips thread I've clicked on tonight!

Personally I think a large portion of chips is share size.
