to think it isn't greedy to eat a whole fish, portion of chips and mushy peas with bread and butter?

Opinions vary wildly in our family; DH and DS2 will happily eat a large portion of chips with a fish, or a pie and a fishcake, or a fishcake and a jumbo battered sausage. I will eat a fishcake and 2/3 of a portion of chips, but I like bread and butter to make chip butties as well. In-laws think we are all insanely greedy and will split a small fish between them and a handful of chips each. If they have mushy peas, they will eat commensurately fewer chips because peas are incredibly filling.

What's your chippy order? And do you think a portion of chips is designed to be shared, or is an expected portion for one person?

I’ve just had fish and chips. My order was a mini cod, actually the size of a normal piece of fish, and a regular chips and small peas. DH had a sausage and we shared the chips with some left. My plate was full, it was a huge meal. Last time I ordered a normal haddock and it would have served 3 people, hence the mini cod.

The one thing that this thread has certainly done is highlight the regional differences of what is considered 'normal' in a chip shop! I had never heard of Wallies, Scallops or Scraps before 🤣

oakleaffy · 11/08/2023 19:25

If they are slim, it's not greedy. It shows they need the calories.

BMW6 · 11/08/2023 19:25

Well I'd refuse to eat with them under any circumstances (Christmas, birthdays) and I'd tell her exactly why! Surely your DH will back you up on this?
She's an utter bitch and it ruins your meal so why on earth would you put up with it!

bridgetreilly · 11/08/2023 19:25

I can eat a small cod and chips from my local chippy but I can’t imagine adding bread and butter to it. I would never share, though!

Sallyh87 · 11/08/2023 19:27

We do a selection from the chipper, me and DH will share a small fish and chips but then I order

  • battered sausage
  • saveloy
  • mushy peas
  • curry sauce
  • potato fritters
  • pea fritter

And share!

No bread and butter though because I’m a light eater 😂

'Scraps'...I hadn't either- A Northern friend said they are the battered crumbs that fall from the fish?

Love regional differences. 💕 I love regional words, as well like ''Smoovin'' for stroking and ''Mard'' for being in a grump.

Fish and chips and a serve of calamari between two. Chips between two is plenty for us, I don't like waste and we can't eat a whole portion each. It's just with chips, no 'competitive undereating'.

They do! MIL is the sort of person who serves steak for the men and salmon for the women, and will performatively leave salad because she's "full" after a couple of bits of cucumber and a new potato. She thinks I eat like a man and it's unnattractive.

Ha ha ‘penis portions’ - my FIL is very sexist, does nothing and expects to be waited on hand and foot as he was the (piss poor) breadwinner. MIL therefore thinks her life revolves around being slim and waiting on him to keep him happy, and eats like a sparrow. I am served the same when with her and am literally starving at theirs. I take food off DHs plate much to her distress.

to be fair I can’t eat as much as I get older without turning obese.

eat what you want. Next time she comments tell her it’s rude. I suspect she won’t like it but she won’t do it again (to your face).

Soubriquet · 11/08/2023 19:29

Ah scraps are a big thing around here. My favourite chippy will actually have a huge pile of them. They go really quickly and are always being replenished

One learns a lot on MN - sometimes for the good.

Susuwatariandkodama · 11/08/2023 19:30

1 large chips split between 4, dh will have a med cod, I’ll have a saveloy, the kids will have nuggets and some buttered bread for a chip butty

mumda · 11/08/2023 19:30

Local chippy - portions about right.
Mum's local chippy - huge fish and buckets of chips. Can share a portion.
Costs about the same.

Sleepyquest · 11/08/2023 19:30

Older people seem to eat less. Just ignore them. I'd happily eat all that

According to google

"Simply put, no – scallops aren't suitable for vegans as they're a living part of the animal kingdom. Although there might be some arguments that their lack of a central nervous system stops them from feeling pain in the same way as mammals, this still doesn't mean that they're suitable for vegans."

People are talking about a potato scallop not a seafood scallop. It's a large thick slice of potato, parboiled, dipped in batter and then deep fried. Best served with salt and loads of vinegar. It's a northern thing but I believe other places may call them fritters. Philistines!

Ofcourseshecan · 11/08/2023 19:32

Fish, chips and mushy peas— my mouth is watering. DH and I have that most weeks. Couldn’t manage bread as well. Save that to have with a much-lighter soup the next day. Mmmmm.

CateringPanic · 11/08/2023 19:32

Last time I had fish and chips I had a small cod and chips, a savaloy, gravy and mushy peas. I’ve always had a healthy appetite and I life weights x4 week so it has to go somewhere. My MIL would probably order a small cod and chips and complain it is too large. Your in laws probably need fewer calories if they are old and don’t move much

natura · 11/08/2023 19:34

I find the word 'greedy' very odd – I can imagine it in a Roald Dahl children's book but I'm not sure it really has a place in adult thinking.

See I understand potato fritters then I know it's vegan.

Darkacademic · 11/08/2023 19:35

In my life this is an in law thing…my mil and sil are perfomative under eaters (like,
embarrassing in restaurants level) and my grandparents were notorious for saying “only one potato each for us, we’re not big eaters” before chomping through about 5
of my mum’s amazing roasties. Fortunately she had them sussed and would make loads because even aged about 5 I would be anxiously eyeing them in case I didn’t get seconds!

PlasticineKing · 11/08/2023 19:36

Bet they’re boomers. Sounds like my in laws 😂 MIL has since covid, decided they either eat lunch or dinner. I won’t go into details, but it’s insane. They happily eat biscuits and cake and full fat coffees between meals so it’s really unnecessary!

Cowlover89 · 11/08/2023 19:36

VyeBrator · 11/08/2023 18:54

Unless you’re all fat and it’s their way of having a dig at you…😂

This is probably what's behind it.

People very rarely comment on slim people with very large appetites, or if they do, it's not generally to call them 'greedy'.

I get comments all the time. Apparently I can never stop eating and I should be 50 clem. Skinny people get judged as much as fat people

I can be very greedy- I can smash a packet of Jaffa cakes in one go.
That IS greedy.

Tinytigertail · 11/08/2023 19:37

The portions in our chippy are huge, so we split 2 medium portions between 4 of us, 1 mushy peas between two of us and we will all have a slice of bread and butter for the obligatory chip butty! I definitely feel borderline uncomfortably full of I eat all of that, so do tend to leave a bit of something on the plate.

landbeforegrime · 11/08/2023 19:38

my dad is currently sat down eating a decent sized battered fish, regular chips, entire can of mushy peas and 4 slices of buttered bread. i think it's too much but it's his regular Friday meal. it always gets finished too.
