to think it isn't greedy to eat a whole fish, portion of chips and mushy peas with bread and butter?

Opinions vary wildly in our family; DH and DS2 will happily eat a large portion of chips with a fish, or a pie and a fishcake, or a fishcake and a jumbo battered sausage. I will eat a fishcake and 2/3 of a portion of chips, but I like bread and butter to make chip butties as well. In-laws think we are all insanely greedy and will split a small fish between them and a handful of chips each. If they have mushy peas, they will eat commensurately fewer chips because peas are incredibly filling.

What's your chippy order? And do you think a portion of chips is designed to be shared, or is an expected portion for one person?

Yeah that would be a massive amount for me but if I look at carbs I put weight on. The only way I manage to stay a size ten is by generally keeping an eye on them. Even if I binged however I couldn’t manage all of that. Or rather I COULD definitely eat it all! But not also maintaining my figure and i am just too vain for that.

SallyWD · 11/08/2023 19:14

Everyone's different. I can easily eat a full portion of fish and chips and finish the kid's chips! A lot of my friends seem amazed by this. I had fish and chips with one friend and it seemed to blow her mind that I could eat a full portion. She kept going on about how she could never manage it (making me feel like a glutton). However, she went on to order and eat an entire knickerbocker glory whereas I had no dessert.
Although I can easily eat fish and chips, I don't think I'm greedy. I don't eat a huge amount generally and never want dessert for example. I just really enjoy fish and chips.

And weird if in laws are commenting that. Obviously fish and chips isn’t a healthy meal but fine as an occasion treat

Protein & carb - just add some wallies for balance.

maddiemookins16mum · 11/08/2023 19:15

There’s me, DH and DMIL here.
If we were ordering tonight we’d have 1 large fish, 1 medium fish and a large chips. DMIL and I half the large fish, DH has the medium. We always do bread and butter and get the tartare sauce out.
DD would have a battered sausage and small chips.
Mushy peas are vile.

I bet whoever it was that first mentioned scallops wishes they'd included the word 'potato' before it for the selectively word-blind.

But why would you, they're on the menu in every chippy that has them that I've been in (and that is quite a lot of chippies) as 'scallops' - not as 'potato scallops'.

If they are on offer but NOT referred to as scallops, they're called potato fritters.

In the context of chip shops 'scallop' = 'battered slice of potato'.

Want a chippy tea now!

BeckyBlue · 11/08/2023 19:16

Small fish and chips, with a pot of curry sauce

Fish goes down the middle, forming a battered dam, keeping ketchup on one side (for the fish) and chips and curry sauce on t'other. Salt and vinegar over everything.

ChrisPPancake · 11/08/2023 19:16

I get a kid's fish meal (3 large fish goujons). Plenty of chips. Side of peas and a pickled egg.

One portion of chips can do at least 2, possibly 3 (dh and teen dc). V large portions at our chippy.

We always used to have a plate of bread and butter on the table for chip butties when I was growing up. Might do that again next time we have a chippy tea!

MyMachineAndMe · 11/08/2023 19:16

I try to eat everything I get, especially if I haven't eaten anything else all day. I try to only eat until I'm full, though I find I end up stuffing everything in if I have a takeaway and finishing before I've registered how full I am!

FatCatBum · 11/08/2023 19:17

Acceptable drinks to have with a chip shop tea are: a cup of tea, a pint of lager, a can of some weird fizzy drink you wouldn’t normally choose (eg cream soda or ginger beer) or - weirdly - champagne/Cava/Prosecco.

Ha ha so true, literally the only time I'd drink a Shandy Bass!!

Regholdsworthswaterbed · 11/08/2023 19:18

For some reason I really struggle with a large portion of fish and chips and feel dreadful after. I don't have the same problem with an Indian and will scoff the lot!

My chippy order is usually a small bag of chips and either a small fish or a turnover. Sometimes I have a buttered bread cake. Cannot stand mushy peas or chip shop curry and gravy has no place on chips at all.

With the in-laws on this one, but no judgement. We share as otherwise makes us feel ill.

What is a Wally??

chip shop curry sauce is delicious.

A wally is a pickle.

I might have one of each instead of two pickled eggs, although I'm sticking with the Irn Bru 😀

HurdyGurdy19 · 11/08/2023 19:19

DH and I share one large fish (usually the size of a small whale) and a medium portion of chips. And have two slices of bread and butter each for chip butties.

Just enough for us, although I tend to leave a fair chunk of the batter.

LeftTheWashingOut · 11/08/2023 19:20

Me and DH will have a fish each and then share a large chips with a slice of bread and butter. If we're bothering to go out to get chips it's a treat and I want to feel full afterwards! Only a handful of chips each is frankly not worth the journey

Id eat my own portion of chips but DH can't always manage them (and has self control) so we share a large otherwise id eat all mine and the rest of his...

Georgyporky · 11/08/2023 19:05

Mushy peas. Curry sauce (WTF). Strange forrin things to me.

What about a wally or two ?

What's a Wally 😱

Georgyporky · 11/08/2023 19:20

"bread cake" ?
Seems a contradiction in terms. What is it ?

GalileoHumpkins · 11/08/2023 19:22

Way too much for me, I'm a very small eater and can't do bread with a meal, I just get full very quickly.

caringcarer · 11/08/2023 19:24

A Mini fish and small chips is enough for me. DS can eat a full portion of fish and chips but wouldn't have bread and butter, doubling up on carbs too.

Cakeandcardio · 11/08/2023 19:24

I'm sure your in-laws have considerably less muscle mass than the lot of you so will have smaller appetites. They probably aren't as active either. So for them it would be greedy. For you its just delicious!

ShortColdandGrey · 11/08/2023 19:24

We get a mini supper for our daughter. We get one single and another supper and share the chips. I think it depends on how generous your chippy is with the amount of chips they put in a supper. We were on holiday a few weeks ago and got our usual order. This chippy was very stingy with the chips.

AuntieJune · 11/08/2023 19:24

Technically a portion of chip shop chips should be about four of them or something, calorie wise!

I can eat a whole fish and chips. My in laws often share a takeaway, when you get older you don't need to eat so much, do you? Not sure if through reduced appetite or knowing it's easier to put weight on/getting indigestion more easily.

Soubriquet · 11/08/2023 19:24

Bread roll

every region has their own name for a bread roll

shams05 · 11/08/2023 19:24

It all depends on the size of the portion doesn't it? Every chippy most likely has different portion sizes so no one can say definitely if they're eating the same as the next person on here.
We order 2 large fish n chips and two kebab rolls between 7 of us but youngest two are only 7&4 so really between 5 of us. It gets polished off completely unless the chips portion was extra generous.
