to think it isn't greedy to eat a whole fish, portion of chips and mushy peas with bread and butter?

Opinions vary wildly in our family; DH and DS2 will happily eat a large portion of chips with a fish, or a pie and a fishcake, or a fishcake and a jumbo battered sausage. I will eat a fishcake and 2/3 of a portion of chips, but I like bread and butter to make chip butties as well. In-laws think we are all insanely greedy and will split a small fish between them and a handful of chips each. If they have mushy peas, they will eat commensurately fewer chips because peas are incredibly filling.

What's your chippy order? And do you think a portion of chips is designed to be shared, or is an expected portion for one person?

Pale ale with fish and chips is pretty good too. But for me, wine is my go to. Unless I'm having a booze free week and then it's dandelion and burdock.

Ok, I won't worry about you now. For a minute I was thinking you needed an intervention. 😅

Snippit · 12/08/2023 22:02

Portion sizes are far too big now, that’s why we have an obesity problem.

This is an example of how portions have changed since the 70’s.

Unless you’re doing a manual job like my dad used to then portions are ridiculous for most people.

But then if it's portion size surely people will just buy two instead ?

Figmentofmyimagination · 12/08/2023 22:19

When I was growing up in the 70s, my mum would buy one pizza for the whole family. We’d each have a slice for tea with some beans or whatever. We just thought that was a normal portion - say one pizza, split between 4 or 5 people. Nowadays it’s normal for that pizza size to be given to one person. I think my teenage children would have been a bit shocked if I’d bought one pizza and split it between all of us.

Where do chip shops sell battered scallops (that cost c. £35 per kilo raw)?

I've had battered scallops in NZ many years ago.
Never seen them in the UK.

neighboursmustliveon · 12/08/2023 22:37

My in laws are the same, fish and chips shared plus they have enough chips left for tea time!

We don’t eat fish in this house so we usually only have chips and bread and butter (also love a chip butty). Peas are not filling though 😂

TheWernethWife · 12/08/2023 22:49

In the North West slices of potato dipped in batter and deep fried, called scallops, very nice.

DVL · 12/08/2023 23:18

If it comes as a deal in a tray like sausage and chips then surely that’s a portion for one person? I guess it depends where you go because the kebab at our local is HUGE so we would share that and a bag of chips but if it was kebab and chips in a tray then we wouldn’t

Also chippy is a treat so eat until you regret it I say :) not like you do it every night

BarbaraofSeville · 13/08/2023 03:30

I don't understand eating until you burst being a treat. Surely the treat is the nice food?

Those pictures above don't even show the half of it, literally. Even in the modern 'big' portion, that's a lot less food than standard size fish and chips, Chinese etc.

But @ineverknowwhatusernametouse you are joking surely?

'Now me and my DH chinese, people are always in shock at what we eat between the 2 of us. Sweet and sour chicken balls, chips, rice, crispy shredded beef in peking sauce, salt and pepper chicken pieces, chicken curry, extra curry sauce, chicken chow mein (all large) and occasionally some ribs too. And of course prawn crackers'

Because even if your idea of large is the flat containers the size of a ready meal tray, there you have four mains and three sides, which would comfortably serve 4 to 6 people. Between 2, you'd literally need to be eating off dustbin lid size plates to serve it between 2.

God why must people start these threads, so everyone else piles in and takes the piss out of 'greedy' people or those who have small appetites?

Just eat what you want, it's your body and it's only greedy if you're taking more than your fair and leaving others short.

Just start hinting at her eating disorder.

ineverknowwhatusernametouse · 13/08/2023 06:15

@BarbaraofSeville

we would do it in 2 sittings. But in the same evening. And my husband has about 2 thirds of it. I should mention. He’s not fat. But he’s 6ft 2, 18 stone and well built. We work out everyday. As I said it’s only occasional, which is prob why we go so over the top. We just really enjoy it. That would not reflect our everyday portion sizes. Generally we eat pretty healthy. Shake for lunch and salad or chicken and veg for dinner.

ineverknowwhatusernametouse · 13/08/2023 07:06

@BarbaraofSeville

I forgot. We have a few huge plates from ikea. Practically dustbin lid size 😂 just for these occasions. Or if my husband is having a Sunday dinner. He likes A LOT of vegetables!!

crocodileboots · 13/08/2023 07:13

Tbf, I couldn't manage a full size fish n chips from our local, because it's massive, the cod is hanging off the edges of the plate. We tend to get one portion and split it and it gives us a plateful each.

What everyone else does is their own business, tell your relatives to butt out.

red78hot · 13/08/2023 07:23

Our nearest chippy is very generous with chips, we get fish and chips and a fish, and share the chips, and we still struggle with the chips.

Sometimes I think the competitive overeating threads on MN are as bad as the competitive undereating ones.

pinkfondu · 13/08/2023 08:02

She's an Almond Mum, her opinion should be ignored

Just spotted this thread. Settling down to read it all and enjoy the under eating competitiveness, these are my favourite.

Loveduvetdays · 13/08/2023 09:16

My husband and son have loads more chips on their plates, and they'll ask me if I've got enough as my portion is small. I'll always refuse and appear like I have such a dainty appetite. What they haven't seen is me shovelling them into my mouth as I'm serving up, especially the crispy ones, leaving the soggier chips for them 😂

Absolutely. Or the people who eat a normal serving size are ridiculed as 'competitive undereaters'. I'd want about half the plate of fish, quarter of chips and quarter of salad.

TheWernethWife · 13/08/2023 09:52

Best fish and chips I ever had were from Lewis's in Seahouses. Tasted lovely washed down with a crisp chardonnay.

We'll be there next month, so ready for a break.

They do! MIL is the sort of person who serves steak for the men and salmon for the women, and will performatively leave salad because she's "full" after a couple of bits of cucumber and a new potato. She thinks I eat like a man and it's unnattractive.

Ugh that sounds awful and infuriating. It would goad me into being more "manly" with everything. Man spreading, mansplaining, peeing standing up ;-)

She actually sounds quite pitiable though. Just thing, you feel judged and ill at ease when you're eating in her company, but she has that shit going on in her head all the time! How sad for her.

Not the overeating competitiveness?

Because as usual, this thread has both extremes.

I wonder why under eating tends to rile people more than all the binge eating?

Another reason why these threads are so odd.

Possibly because I notice the po-faced under eating comments more. Don't know why.

If she ever says how you eat is unattractive remind her that her son is more than happy to jump in bed with you no matter what you eat....... That's how she has a grandson
