to think it isn't greedy to eat a whole fish, portion of chips and mushy peas with bread and butter?

Opinions vary wildly in our family; DH and DS2 will happily eat a large portion of chips with a fish, or a pie and a fishcake, or a fishcake and a jumbo battered sausage. I will eat a fishcake and 2/3 of a portion of chips, but I like bread and butter to make chip butties as well. In-laws think we are all insanely greedy and will split a small fish between them and a handful of chips each. If they have mushy peas, they will eat commensurately fewer chips because peas are incredibly filling.

What's your chippy order? And do you think a portion of chips is designed to be shared, or is an expected portion for one person?

Well as to the OP, god no I cannot eat that.

However: I DO have a big appetite, I just can't easily stomach fried food. I don't mind the fish but I find chip shop chips a bit soggy and meh. I think the equivalent that I can think of is having a pizza to myself; I don't mean Dominos I mean the ones you might have in Europe (where my ILs are) and are definitely served as an individual serving. My inlaws always have to comment that it's the biggest thing they've eaten in ages and how none of us will have to eat anything else in a day if we've eaten one. etc. They've always been this way but it's definitely taken on a more judgmental tone in older age.

Just let people eat fgs.

A crisp dry white wine with fish and chips is the best!

Nice summer day, seaside, perfectly c

Try again:

Nice summer day, seaside, bit of a breeze, perfectly cooked (not greasy) crispy fish and chips, and a pale ale. 😛

Medusaismyhero · 12/08/2023 19:34

My ex in laws share a fish supper. They also pick off the batter and only eat the fish as it's healthier! Bloody weirdos.

I'd cry if I had to share a fish supper...

Fruitygal · 12/08/2023 19:36

i have a children’s sized fish and chips and eat half the chips.

DH has standard haddock and a large portion of chips which he shares with DS who has a battered sausage.

Sounds like a very small amount of food that your in laws have ……and unless you are big exercisers or work in very manual jobs your portions sound larger than I’d expect.

But who cares ……but super jealous if you don’t exercise and can eat like that once a week or fortnight and stay a healthy weight …. .. btw old people do generally have smaller appetites

Dagnabit · 12/08/2023 19:55

I couldn’t eat a whole large portion of chips with a large fish and bread and butter but I struggle with chip shop chips anyway but I don’t think it’s greedy!

Poppysmom22 · 12/08/2023 20:08

I wouldn't eat it because I have an incrediblely sensitive digestion that couldn't handle that much grease. But I love to eat and would scarf all that if I could

Angrywife · 12/08/2023 20:10

A lot of people would consider that a single portion and happily eat it all (me included).

Equally a lot of people are over weight, the nation is getting heavier and people are grossly over eating (me included).

Just because we can eat it all, doesn't mean we should, or that it's healthy.

LlynTegid · 12/08/2023 20:18

As an occasional treat but not a regular meal, fine.

FinallyMrsT · 12/08/2023 20:21

Usually regular sized lightly battered fish with regular chips and gravy- i tend to eat about 2/3rds of this. Or a jumbo sausage (not battered) with regular chips and gravy usually all sausage and 2/3rds chips.
No bread an butter
Usually that's overfills of eyes bigger than my belly.
Dh Usually has similar portions but will finish whatever I don't eat.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 12/08/2023 20:25

Depends on the chippy!

One near me is proper stingy. A portion of chips is tiny. Another place is really generous, I ordered a mini fish with standard chips and it was massive!

The first place... Yes, you'd probably need a supersized meal to feed the average adult. The second place, no. Fish wise, yes to one each but could easily share a large portion of chips between two adults and possibly have a bit leftover.

ActDottie · 12/08/2023 20:26

Does it matter? It’s not greedy at all if you can manage it. I’d say greedy is more where you eat food that was for someone else rather than just eating lots of food.

Same, except I eat it and deal with the consequences. Basically... I'm a twat.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 12/08/2023 20:28

Also, definitely assuming these are orange chips. Not a pasty poor relation 😂

Award 🥇 for the most pointless thread ever goes to you 🤣

Vintagecreamandcottagepie · 12/08/2023 20:31

I love a good cod and chips. It's has to be a good chippie though, or it's disappointing.

Always get cod and chips, and mushy peas. Occasionally just chips and curry sauce. Like the idea of bread and butter with it!

Ooh, and a tin of cherry coke. Tea would be acceptable also.

Pale ale with fish and chips is pretty good too. But for me, wine is my go to. Unless I'm having a booze free week and then it's dandelion and burdock.

pollymere · 12/08/2023 20:36

I used to be able to eat a medium fish with a small chips and eat pudding too. Now I start picking at the fish and share a portion of chips with my husband. I think it's the size of the portions where I lived though. When I go to the seaside the large portion is smaller than the regular one back home. At home you probably could share a large fish and chips and not feel hungry after. I think there's a difference between being no longer hungry and eating till you're stuffed. Your IL probably just eat until they're no longer hungry rather than treating themselves.

But I can't stand people who deny themselves food or worse deny others and suggest they are greedy for eating more than three slices of cucumber and a single baby potato. Enjoy your food.

Swishytwip · 12/08/2023 20:45

I'd be sure to order a pint of beer too, just to emphasise how very feminine I am! 😂

Tbh, it sounds as if her issues are more about weird, old fashioned ideas about gender than actually about food. Maybe she envies your freedom from such nonsense?

ineverknowwhatusernametouse · 12/08/2023 21:00

i definitely don’t like to share my chips. And my local chippy the portion size is huge. I don’t like fish though. But I’d have sausage and gravy too.

Now me and my DH chinese, people are always in shock at what we eat between the 2 of us. Sweet and sour chicken balls, chips, rice, crispy shredded beef in peking sauce, salt and pepper chicken pieces, chicken curry, extra curry sauce, chicken chow mein (all large) and occasionally some ribs too. And of course prawn crackers! And no… we don’t have left overs the next day. That food gets ate right away 😂but as u can imagine… it’s soo expensive, even more so now. So it has to be an ovcasional treat now. Usually if we’ve just flown back from holiday or from visiting family, we’ll treat ourselves. Lol

Inmyonesie · 12/08/2023 21:01

We would split a large portion between 4 of us. No way could any of us eat that much food (unless Chinese then dh could).

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 12/08/2023 21:22

Half a fish (other half reheated the next day), a handful of battered chips and a curry sauce.

Tbf our local does massive portions. The fish is like a bloody shark.

sumayyah · 12/08/2023 21:49

We get two portions of chips and a tub of peas to do three of us.
were vegetarian so do an Aldi battered sausage for two of us and a few Quorn nuggets for the youngest........
But this is because youngest has ARFID and doesn't eat much and I've had major surgery to my stomach and bowels.

If I were able to eat properly I would definitely be having a full portion of chips and full container to myself

Small fish and chips was the kids option when I was growing up, not a mission my parents would share one between them

Snippit · 12/08/2023 22:02

Portion sizes are far too big now, that’s why we have an obesity problem.

This is an example of how portions have changed since the 70’s.

Unless you’re doing a manual job like my dad used to then portions are ridiculous for most people.

to think it isn't greedy to eat a whole fish, portion of chips and mushy peas with bread and butter?
Bluejaybean · 12/08/2023 22:10

I get fishcake, chips and mushy peas. Salt and vinegar, bit of ketchup. Usually don't finish the chips but I still want my own portion.

Very rude to comment on how much you eat.
