To think a friendship between a 20 year old and 27 year old is odd

And the gap. Is massive

OP posts:
Babydust00 · 11/08/2023 18:14

No because everyone’s different. In your twenties everyone is doing hugely different things. Some go to uni, some do apprenticeships, some travel the world, some settle young, some still live at home . As my username suggests, I am in my early 20s. I have friends in their late 20s. I have a house and a DH. That would be some people my age and 10yrs older’s idea of hell - they wouldn’t want to be tied down!

After you’re 18, age - especially in friendships - is just a number. Why are you so invested?

Strawberriesandpears · 11/08/2023 18:14

I am friends with someone around 25 years older than me and also someone 40 years older!

LakeTiticaca · 11/08/2023 18:15

Mumsnet law decrees that you are not allowed to have friendship/relationship with anyone who is more than 6 months older or younger than yourself 🤣🤣

MaybeSmaller · 11/08/2023 18:19

YABU

If you think that, you're odd.

People can be friends at any age.

7 years isn't "massive" and what does it even matter anyway?

Sooze2023 · 11/08/2023 18:20

Not odd at all!!!! 7 years is nothing unless the younger was underage.

There's no "underage" for friendship FFS! Underage is to do with having sex

cocoromo · 11/08/2023 18:22

Do you mean 57 op?

Moveoverdarlin · 11/08/2023 18:23

When I was twenty my best friend was a man who was 20 years older than me. We just got on really well, chatted music, our love lives, people we both knew. I knew people thought it was odd, but it was all above board, nothing ever untoward happened. I still count him as one of my best ever friends even though we don’t see each other very often.

User1789 · 11/08/2023 18:23

When I was 19 I had an affair with a 28 year old male 'friend'. The gap was too big tbh and looking back on it I can see how problematic it was.

However, at the same time I had friends in their mid-30s and that wasn't weird. And they tried to dissuade me from the whole affair with a man about a decade me senior... to no avail of course.

Pickingmyselfup · 11/08/2023 18:24

It's not odd, even less odd if the 2 have shared interests and are similar in maturity levels.

My step sister is about 7 years younger than me and when we met the gap was huge, she was a young child, I was a teenager with very different interests. Fast forward decades later I'm 36, she's 30 and the gap is nothing, especially because we are both parents to similar aged kids so we are at the same stage of life.

One of my friends is a year younger than my sister, again a parent, settled down so we are also at the same stage of life.

If someone 7 years younger was horrendously immature then no I can't imagine being friends with them and the same applied when I was 27.

Personally I would apply the same rules to relationships as I would to friendships which for me is 10 years either side but as I get older I could see how it could easily go to 15+ there is only so much maturing a person can do.

recklessgran · 11/08/2023 18:26

Why is it odd? Is this an actual friendship or a romance you're talking about here OP? Either way, neither is odd at all. I was 20 when I married DH who was 30. We're still here 47 years later and I like to think he wasn't perving or whatever it is you think is odd about an age gap.......

multisurface · 11/08/2023 18:27

My best friend is 7 years older than me, and he's male and I'm female, and I'm 23 years older than another close friend.

What's your point OP?

MyMachineAndMe · 11/08/2023 18:30

No. When I got a job after my degree I was working with, and became friends and started socialising with, people 20+ years older than me and it didn't feel wrong at all. It's the same now, only I'm the older one.

bladebladebla1 · 11/08/2023 18:32

😂

TribeD · 11/08/2023 18:37

My friends are anywhere between 13 years younger than me and 13 years older.

Makes no difference to me. We're adults.

Prescottdanni123 · 11/08/2023 18:38

I had friends in their forties when I was 20. I'm 30 now and we are still friends

JustToBeMe · 11/08/2023 18:44

So what's the back story Op?

Guessing it's a daughter with older male friend?

I'm old...ish 57 in about 10 days ish...

I had a few 'boyfriends when younger 10ish years older than I...

Ive friends of all ages, from people the same age as my sons 21/24+ 🤷‍♀️ and people the same age as my parents, late 70s-early 80s🤷‍♀️

eg...my best friend is 11 years younger than me!.

GrannyRose15 · 11/08/2023 18:48

My sister married someone with this age gap. Another sister married someone 15 years her senior. So no I don’t think it’s odd.

TinkerbellefromYorkshire · 11/08/2023 18:51

My friend is 20 years older than me.. she's 85 I'm 65.. been friends since l was 28.. what's weird?

PhantomUnicorn · 11/08/2023 18:51

no, my friendship group spans 21-45

DeadbeatYoda · 11/08/2023 18:52

Not at all, one very good friend of mine was ten years older and, at the moment, I have a lovely friend who 28 years older.
My older sister has also often had friends of 10 / 15 years her senior. What of it?

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 11/08/2023 18:54

TAAT??

Anyway no. I have friends the best part of 20 years younger than me and 30 years older.

girlfriend44 · 11/08/2023 18:59

Your odd for asking.

bakewellbride · 11/08/2023 19:03

My 40 year old friend has a friend in her 80s! Nothing wrong with it op!

MsDogLady · 11/08/2023 19:03
