Big bars of chocolate

JoRobyn · 10/08/2023 11:08

I remember when I was a child, big bars of chocolate were a birthday or Christmas treat. Now they're so easy and cheap to come by, I can easily eat one in one go. Anyone else, or am I a disgusting pig?! (Just had dairy milk with Dime.....would recommend!)

I literally have just eaten a whole bar of mint aero in about 30 seconds. It was glorious

But Aero is mostly air, so that’s all right.

HeritageBlooms · 10/08/2023 15:25

Happy memories of getting a huge bar of Cadbury fruit and nut as a birthday treat and scoffing it reading my new books. Happy days.

still bitter that Cadbury chocolate is disgusting now and my yearly treat is no more

One square a day is enough!

🤣🤣🤣🤣 a whole square? Greedy!

DyslexicPoster · 10/08/2023 15:27

The big bars that are thin and on offer for £1? If so they aren't much bigger if at all than a narrow buy chunky bar. In term time I buy one every Friday on the school pick up as a treat.

Yeah, "more to share" Maltesers just sound like a challenge.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 10/08/2023 15:43

I don't think the fact that I didn't eat large quantities of chocolate at a time when I was a child had anything to do with cost or ease of availibility. It was because my parents wouldn't have let me, and wouldn't have had lots in the house at a time. There was nothing physically preventing them buying lots!

Eating habits have changed though. Snacking is a bigger thing, and advertising encourages over-consumption. As does the unsatisfying nature of highly processed food. There's still plenty of nice chocolate though. Aldi Moser Roth is great, unlike Cadbury',Galaxy, Thorntons and sll those other greasy, sickly, unchocolatey-tasting brands.

tt9 · 10/08/2023 15:12

@GoodChat the sweetness of snickers is balanced by the salty peanut butter and nuts so very moreish. similarly I can eat quite a lot of g&b milk choc with sea salt.

Ah yes, that's a very fair point

smooththecat · 10/08/2023 15:48

I couldn’t possibly eat a whole square. I shave off one sliver with a potato peeler and make that last a week.

The poster was joking.

I'm a greedy fecker and will power through any sickly feelings in order to finish a large bar. I won't let it beat me.

QueenofTerrasen · 10/08/2023 11:30

Oh here we go 😂😂😂

What they didn’t mention is that the square is 6” across 😂

Thank you, it always amazes me that people take such an obviously ridiculous statement seriously.

To be fair @GalileoHumpkins it would not be a surprise to find a group on mnetters who seriously think and act like that.

Do you mean the Low-carb group?

We are allowed one square of dark chocolate a day! 🤣

I don't know, there'd be more chocolate for you.....

LaMaG · 10/08/2023 17:23

I'm with you OP only I'm stupid enough to convince myself I'll keep some for another day so I'll take maybe 4 squares and "hide" it somewhere I'll 'forget about it' then spend the next hour or two going back to sneak just 1 more square. I actually counted myself doing this 9 times consecutively recently then tried to bargain with myself that it was OK cos each time I had to climb a stool to reach my secret hiding place therfore I was actually burning calories. Honestly I need professional help

TheDestinationUnknown · 10/08/2023 17:37

Up until my late 20's I could easily polish off a family size bar in one sitting. But nowadays I can't. I don't know whether my taste has changed or cheaper chocolate (dairy milk/galaxy etc) has changed beyond all recognition but I really don't like it any more. I am partial to better quality chocolate now, but as it's quite rich, I can only really eat one row in one sitting, sometimes two rows.

When I was a child, chocolate and sweet stuff wasn't really limited by my parents. So I was allowed to eat a family size bar regularly. My parents would make comments at me about "saving some for later" but they never actually stopped me from eating it all. I am the opposite with my dc's and couldn't imagine just letting them go wild with a family size bar of chocolate. I do try to have a more relaxed approach at Christmas and Easter but luckily they don't go too crazy anyway.

SweetPotatoAndPeanutStew · 10/08/2023 17:46

Kenough · 10/08/2023 11:53

Yes I can eat a ‘sharing bar’ easily in one sitting by myself, ditto a Domino’s pizza.

I couldn’t eat a whole Ben and Jerry ice cream tub though, find those 10x more filling and sickly.

I'd quite happily polish off a whole dominoes FOLLOWED BY the sharing bar of choc. Washed down with wine, though.

caringcarer · 10/08/2023 17:48

VeridicalVagabond · 10/08/2023 11:27

I still only buy them as a treat for birthdays and Christmas, I've never been able to just eat one or two squares and then put it back so I remove temptation from my own path 😂

Ditto. I just can't trust myself, so I don't buy it, therefore not putting temptation in my own way. Same with packets of crisps.

LylaLee · 10/08/2023 17:48

IHeartGeneHunt · 10/08/2023 12:16

Once a fortnight I have a big bar of the nice Lidl chocolate in one go. Any more often than that and I end up eating it every day, it's a slippery slope.

I have one every weekend

mondaytosunday · 10/08/2023 21:35

I remember getting HUGE Dairy Milk chocolate bar at Christmas. Not the big bars you get in the confectionery aisle, much bigger.
My mother was one of those disciplined two squares a day types. That gene has skipped a generation - my daughter doesn't even like chocolate! I could easily eat one of the bars you talk about in one sitting. I just don't buy them.

Brilliantefforts · 10/08/2023 22:21

'I remember getting HUGE Dairy Milk chocolate bar at Christmas. Not the big bars you get in the confectionery aisle, much bigger.'

@mondaytosunday me too, it a 1kg bar from woolworths in a huge cardboard sleeve. We literally marvelled at its size, it was the most exciting chocolate as a child, that and the postbox dispenser with those teeny tiny Cadburys bars in.
