Statement by the Chair of the Conservative Party

"If they don't like barges they should fuck off back to France". 30p Lee Anderson of course, not the BNP. Not the National Front or whatever their current name is. The Chairman of the Conservative Party. Supporters must be so proud. What a statesman. So Churchillian.

I would even say if Labour continues to sit on its hands as they are doing now we might see a surprise slim majority win for the conservatives. We have over a year to go.

Starmer is one of the most uninspiring leaders we have ever had, Labours answer to Theresa May - he has no direction, policy or fixed moral compass whatsoever.

Starmer may lack many things but moral compass is not one of them. It's one of the things I like about him.

IClaudine** don't worry about the freak exchange. No one is kicking themselves more than me for voting this bunch of incompetent pricks in!

Even my staunch Tory friend who persuaded me when I was unsure if to abstain or vote apologised to me for convincing me it was a good idea!

Siddiq Khan seems to be doing a good job of persuading them they were right in the first place.

God how dumb is it to reference Australia where there is no application of the ECHR which is the thing that will destroy Braverman's policy on asylum.

80 per cent of Conservatives think her policy will not work. So they are smarter than the Home Secretary.

Having met Braverman numerous times I can confirm most people are smarter than her.

SgtPercyTwentyman · 09/08/2023 15:45

Crikeyalmighty · 09/08/2023 15:17

@SgtPercyTwentyman amen to that- I think certain very principled labour voters views that they would rather lose and be in permanent opposition than dare to pander to the middle ground is absolutely nuts given the FPTP system we still have- if the system changes then by all means have a pure socialist party . The fact is if you are in opposition you can be as principled as you want- but do sod all to change things .

With you all the way @Crikeyalmighty . What they call "principles" are really nothing more than a desire to maintain their own sense of smug self-satisfaction. They may be happy, but the Tories are back in office and the poor and dispossessed are te ones who have to pay the price.

My DH has also met her and says quite the opposite. Cambridge, the Sorbonne - beyond the reach of « most people », surely.

Blossomtoes · 09/08/2023 15:50

The complete mystery to most people is how the hell Braverman got into Cambridge or the Sorbonne, the latter is of course unfeasible for just about everyone now. Perhaps her specialist subject was Pulling the Ladder Up After Me.

AgathaSpencerGregson · 09/08/2023 15:50

The Sorbonne, apparently, funded by a competitive scholarship. Would that we all were as stupid as Suella.

CloudyMcCloud · 09/08/2023 11:19

So far Labour supporters have said it’s just waffle, there’s no policy yet, and ‘I don’t really support them’

It’s not looking good if the most staunch Labour voters can see the weakness of what was said today when faced with climate change.

Whether people will vote for them knowing that is up to them, but it’s going to get worse as climate change ramps up. I don’t think anyone here is trying to deny that.. unless I’ve missed a climate change denier

It's because you assume everyone who hates what the current story's have done to the country are staunch Labour supporters.

If you keep making that same mistake despite being corrected you'll keep believing the same mistakes.

Lots of people are very centric and vote dependent on the situation, leaders, party of the time.

I know plenty of extremely staunch Tory supporters who are more centric that say there is no way they'd vote for this right wing lot again.

Like worse I know some staunch Tory's who literally believe they can do no writing and shrug about what they are doing despite actually recognising the shitshow they have created. I still have staunch Tory friends who use "but Johnson got the vaccines done".

IClaudine · 09/08/2023 15:50

but honestly the despicable corruption and danger simply must not carry on

Totally agree. It won't end until the Torues are booted out.

Maybe there are a few on this thread. Given how lowly it sounds to some.

She cannot write an opinion and was utterly undistinguished as a lawyer.

She is very good at being opinionated which is not the same thing: many better than her in the Conservatives

Former colleague? Presumably you must be. Jolly unprofessional of you.
or maybe you’re just recycling tittle tattle.

There are a few of these in my family. I absolutely despair. We have stopped talking about politics as we so violently disagree. I am pretty left wing and Labour to me are Tory lite right now, but I will vote that way as we have to get the Tories out. Then push for PR.

It would appear that the right of the Tory party have adopted the same approach currently, which means that there is plenty of middle ground for Labour to occupy, which they can simply do at the moment by not being nasty.

Didn’t you just say you like Starmer and his ‘moral compass’?

If you’re not actually voting for him you’re doing a good impression of doing his PR on his behalf.

Vote for him or don’t, you don’t need to convince me either way.

Anxioys · 09/08/2023 16:05

@AgathaSpencerGregson - both of those points are on the public record, you just didn't know

Think back to all the Ukrainian refugees, they were allowed to choose which country they wanted to go to, now why didn't that have the Mail and Express lot up in arms? Of course they want to return to their country when/if it is safe and the chances are people fleeing the conflicts in Syria and Iraq will seek to go back when/if things are safer

Last sentence 🙄

Can I just say that I really wish that hadn’t been reported. I prefer that kind of comment directed at me to be left standing because it says so much about the poster. I appreciate that whoever did report it did so from the best of motives though.

itsgettingweird why on earth are you friends with staunch Tory voters when you hate the Tory party and all that it stands for?

The complete mystery to most people is how the hell Braverman got into Cambridge or the Sorbonne, the latter is of course unfeasible for just about everyone now

Braverman studied at the Sorbonne via an Entente Cordiale Scholarship - the programme is still running;
https://francobritish.org/en/entente-cordiale/

She also had an Erasmus year as an undergraduate student elsewhere in France - Cambridge law students still have that opportunity via the Turing Scheme.
